Challenges and Dilemmas for Dental Undergraduate Teaching with the Advent of COVID-19

Since the 1980s, the development of neoliberalism has been observed in Brazil, which has led to the progressive weakening of public policies (including those of education) and the population's impoverishment. In the field of education, there was an increase in the privatization of higher education, inadequate to the requirements of national development, characterizing it more as a commodity than as a right. This article aims to discuss some challenges, risks, and possible strategies to face the impact of the COVID19 pandemic in undergraduate dental education. This pandemic had an immediate and dramatic impact on dental education in more than 130 countries, prompting teachers and students to adopt remote teaching activities. In Brazil, theoretical classes were offered remotely, mainly in private institutions where there was an intensification of academic work for both teachers and students. This process requires support in technological and pedagogical aspects, including tools, resources, and training courses. In the resumption of clinical education, changes in biosafety actions are being proposed to preserve the health of the actors involved. The application of these measures will imply a great mobilization of students, teachers, and technicians and extra attention so that the constitutive dimensions of the teaching-learning process in health are not minimized or forgotten

Abstract: This study aimed to develop and validate the semantics and content of the Reception and Screening System for Oral Health Services (SATSB) of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The instrument guides the reception and emergency risk classification in spontaneous oral health demand in SUS primary health care. The first step of the study was content validation, which included the delimitation of the theoretical model, the allocation of diseases and health conditions in the Manchester Triage System scores validated for use in Brazil and was carried out through focus groups with experts. The second step was to validate the semantics of the Reception and Screening System through focus groups carried out with oral health technicians and assistants, who critically evaluated and applied it to users who sought the emergency dental service. A visual analogue pain scale was administered to test the discrimination power of SATSB. SATSB and the pain scale showed similar results, discriminating the problems into urgent, little urgent and non-urgent. It could be observed that about 50% of users sought the service were not urgent cases, which did not require examination or assistance by the dentist. SATSB proved to be valid and useful for reception and risk classification in primary care emergency dental services, being able to be used to organize the demand in a humanized and effective way. Keywords: Screening. The scope of this work is to assess the empowerment of working adolescents and test its possible association with their quality of life. This was a transversal study held with 363 working adolescents that are assisted by a Charity Institution. Data was gathered by applying two questionnaires, one used to measure the quality of life (WHOQoL-Bref), the other were the questions on empowerment from the Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital (SC-IQ) from the World Bank. The dependent variable (empowerment) was constructed by grouping participants, upon segmentation analysis. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the scores of the WHOQoL-Bref domains (physical, psychological, social relations and environment) among the clusters, with 5% significance. With regard to the segmentation analysis, 126 (34.7%) adolescents were classified as having low empowerment, 161 (44.4%) formed the intermediary group and 70 (19.3%) had greater empowerment. The cluster with high empowerment had the highest quality of life score averages in all domains. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed statistically significant difference between the clusters in the psychological (p=0,001), social relations (p=0,003) and global (p=0,024) domains. We conclude that the best quality of life scores were found in the group of adolescents with greater empowerment.O objetivo deste trabalho foi medir o empoderamento de adolescentes trabalhadores e testar sua possível associação com a qualidade de vida.

This study analyses access to health services. The concept of access is described as a characteristic of the health services and it may be approached in different ways. Therefore, access to health services must be determined by each Primary Care Unit with the participation of local staff and the community. The qualitative methodology was employed through action research, and data collection was conducted through interviews and focus groups. The study was conducted with the managers of two primary care units " Confisco, in Belo Horizonte, and Estrela Dalva, in Contagem -, and dwellers in the units' catchment area. The community's access to health services was difficult for it was a borderline area between two cities. Although the study lasted two years, doubts remain about whether it contributed to improve the access of the population, due to political matters involving the topic. However, all problems detected during the research were presented and debated with the administrators of both cities
