High-resolution SAR images for fire susceptibility estimation in urban forestry
We present an adaptive system for the automatic assessment of both physical and anthropic fire impact factors on periurban forestries. The aim is to provide an integrated methodology exploiting a complex data structure built upon a multi resolution grid gathering historical land exploitation and meteorological data, records of human habits together with suitably segmented and interpreted high resolution X-SAR images, and several other information sources. The contribution of the model and its novelty rely mainly on the definition of a learning schema lifting different factors and aspects of fire causes, including physical, social and behavioural ones, to the design of a fire susceptibility map, of a specific urban forestry. The outcome is an integrated geospatial database providing an infrastructure that merges cartography, heterogeneous data and complex analysis, in so establishing a digital environment where users and tools are interactively connected in an efficient and flexible way
Measuring financial integration in new EU member states
The study considers three broad categories of financial integration measures: (i) price-based, which capture discrepancies in asset prices across different national mar kets; (ii) news-based, which analyse the impact that common factors have on the return process of an asset; (iii) quantity-based, which aim at quantifying the effects of frictions on the demand for and supply of securities. This paper finds that financial markets in the new EU Member States (plus Cyprus, Malta and Slovenia) are significantly less integrated than those of the euro area. Nevertheless, there is strong evidence that the process of integration is well under way and has accelerated since accession to the EU
Plasma antioxidants from chocolate
There is some speculation that dietary flavonoids from chocolate, in particular (-)epicatechin, may promote cardiovascular health as a result of direct antioxidant effects or through antithrombotic mechanisms. Here we show that consumption of plain, dark chocolate results in an increase in both the total antioxidant capacity and the (-)epicatechin content of blood plasma, but that these effects are markedly reduced when the chocolate is consumed with milk or if milk is incorporated as milk chocolate. Our findings indicate that milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate in vivo and may therefore negate the potential health benefits that can be derived from eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate

PAMELA results on the cosmic-ray antiproton flux from 60 MeV to 180 GeV in kinetic energy
The satellite-borne experiment PAMELA has been used to make a new measurement
of the cosmic-ray antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton flux ratio which
extends previously published measurements down to 60 MeV and up to 180 GeV in
kinetic energy. During 850 days of data acquisition approximately 1500
antiprotons were observed. The measurements are consistent with purely
secondary production of antiprotons in the galaxy. More precise secondary

Self-Adaptive and Lightweight Real-Time Sleep Recognition With Smartphone
It is widely recognized that sleep is a basic phys- iological process having fundamental effects on human health, performance and well-being. Such evidence stimulates the re- search of solutions to foster self-awareness of personal sleeping habits, and correct living environment management policies to encourage sleep. In this context, the use of mobile technologies powered with automatic sleep recognition capabilities can be helpful, and ubiquitous computing devices like smartphones can be leveraged as proxies to unobtrusively analyse the human behaviour. To this aim, we propose a real-time sleep recognition methodology relied on a smartphone equipped with a mobile app that exploits contextual and usage information to infer sleep habits. During an initial training stage, the selected features are processed by k-Nearest Neighbors, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine classifiers, to select the best performing one. Moreover, a 1st-order Markov Chain is applied to improve the recognition performance. Experimental results, both offline in a Matlab environment, and online through a fully functional Android app, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving acceptable results in term of Precision, Recall, and F1-score
Quantum median filter for total variation image denoising
In this new computing paradigm, named quantum computing, researchers from all over
the world are taking their first steps in designing quantum circuits for image process-
ing, through a difficult process of knowledge transfer. This effort is named quantum
image processing, an emerging research field pushed by powerful parallel comput-
ing capabilities of quantum computers. This work goes in this direction and proposes
the challenging development of a powerful method of image denoising, such as the
total variation (TV) model, in a quantum environment. The proposed quantum TV is
described and its sub-components are analysed. Despite the natural limitations of the
current capabilities of quantum devices, the experimental results show a competitive
denoising performance compared to the classical variational TV counterpar
A global fit to determine the pseudoscalar mixing angle and the gluonium content of the eta' meson
We update the values of the eta-eta' mixing angle and of the eta' gluonium
content by fitting our measurement R_phi = BR(phi to eta' gamma)/ BR(phi to eta
gamma) together with several vector meson radiative decays to pseudoscalars (V
to P gamma), pseudoscalar mesons radiative decays to vectors (P to V gamma) and
the eta' to gamma gamma, pi^0 to gamma gamma widths. From the fit we extract a
gluonium fraction of Z^2_G = 0.12 +- 0.04, the pseudoscalar mixing angle psi_P
= (40.4 +- 0.6) degree and the phi-omega mixing angle psi_V = (3.32 +- 0.09)
degree. Z^2_G and psi_P are fairly consistent with those previously published.
We also evaluate the impact on the eta' gluonium content determination of
future experimental improvements of the eta' branching ratios and decay width.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures to submit to JHE
Precision Measurement of KS Meson Lifetime with the KLOE detector
Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE
detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper
time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This
is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average
derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on
the direction of the Ks.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
