The influence of the starvation-predation trade-off on the relationship between ambient temperature and body size among endotherms
Aim: The tendency for animals at higher latitudes to be larger (Bergmann's rule) is generally explained by recourse to latitudinal effects on ambient temperature and the food supply, but these receive only mixed support and do not explain observations of the inverse to Bergmann's rule. Our aim was to better understand how ecological variables might influence body size and thereby explain this mixed support. Location: World-wide. Methods: Previous explanations do not allow for the selective pressure exerted by the trade-off between predation and starvation, which we incorporate in a model of optimal body size and energy storage of a generalized homeotherm. In contrast to existing arguments, we concentrate on survival over winter when the food supply is poor and can be interrupted for short periods. Results: We use our model to assess the logical validity of the heat conservation hypothesis and show that it must allow for the roles of both food availability and predation risk. We find that whether the effect of temperature on body size is positive or negative depends on temperature range, predator density, and the likelihood of long interruptions to foraging. Furthermore, changing day length explains differing effects of altitude and latitude on body size, leading to opposite predictions for nocturnal and diurnal endotherms. Food availability and ambient temperature can have counteracting selective pressures on body mass, and can lead to a non-monotonic relationship between latitude and size, as observed in several studies. Main conclusions: Our work provides a theoretical framework for understanding the relationships between the costs and benefits of large body size and eco-geographical patterns among endotherms world-wide
Public interest litigation: making the case in Australia
Litigation is widely and appropriately recognised as an important component of the public interest advocacy \u27toolkit\u27. Yet, little attention has been paid in Australian research and scholarship to an important question: under what circumstances is public interest litigation (PIL) an effective way to bring about progressive social change? Informed by a review of the international literature on PIL, the authors of this article argue for the importance of drawing on Australia\u27s rich history with PIL to develop a solid empirical evidence base which can inform future decision about the strategic employment of PIL in campaigns to address the concerns and needs of disadvantaged and marginalised sections of Australian society

Writing Analytics focuses on the measurement and analysis of written texts for the purpose of understanding writing processes and products, in their educational contexts, and improving the teaching and learning of writing. This workshop adopts a critical, holistic perspective in which the definition of "the system" and "success" is not restricted to IR metrics such as precision and recall, but recognizes the many wider issues that aid or obstruct analytics adoption in educational settings, such as theoretical and pedagogical grounding, usability, user experience, stakeholder design engagement, practitioner development, organizational infrastructure, policy and ethics
CAPAbility: Comparison of the JOURNEY II Bi-Cruciate Stabilised and GENESIS II total knee arthroplasty in performance and functional ability: protocol of a randomised controlled trial
Background: Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common condition that is expected to rise in the next two decades leading to an associated increase in total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. Although there is little debate regarding the safety and efficacy of modern TKR, up to 20% of patients report poor functional outcomes following surgery. This study will investigate the functional outcome of two TKRs; the JOURNEY II Bi-Cruciate Stabilised knee arthroplasty, a newer knee prosthesis designed to provide guided motion and improve knee kinematics by more closely approximating a normal knee, and the GENESIS II, a proven existing design. Aim: To compare the change in Patient-reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) scores of the JOURNEY II BCS and the GENESIS II from pre-operation to 6 months post operation. Methods: CAPAbility is a pragmatic, blinded, two-arm parallel, randomised controlled trial recruiting patients with primary osteoarthritis due to have unilateral TKR surgery across two UK hospitals. Eligible participants (n = 80) will be randomly allocated to receive either the JOURNEY II or the GENESIS II BCS knee prosthesis. Baseline measures will be taken prior to surgery. Patients will be followed at 1 week, 6 to 8 weeks and 6 months post-operatively. The primary outcome is the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) at 6 months post-operatively. Secondary outcomes include: Other PROMs, biomechanical, radiological (computerised tomography, (CT)), clinical efficacy and safety outcomes. An embedded qualitative study will also investigate patients' perspectives via interview pre and post surgery on variables known to affect the outcome of TKR surgery. A sub-sample (n = 30) will have additional in-depth interviews to explore the themes identified. The surgeons' perspectives on the operation will be investigated by a group interview after all participants have undergone surgery. Discussion: This trial will evaluate two generations of TKR using PROMS, kinematic and radiological analyses and qualitative outcomes from the patient perspective
Stochastic Resonance in a Dipole
We show that the dipole, a system usually proposed to model relaxation
phenomena, exhibits a maximum in the signal-to-noise ratio at a non-zero noise
level, thus indicating the appearance of stochastic resonance. The phenomenon
occurs in two different situations, i.e. when the minimum of the potential of
the dipole remains fixed in time and when it switches periodically between two
equilibrium points. We have also found that the signal-to-noise ratio has a

Providing care for older adults in the Emergency Department: expert clinical recommendations from the European Task Force on Geriatric Emergency Medicine

Many opportunities in everyday clinical care are missed to improve care for this susceptible and growing patient group. The aim was to develop expert clinical recommendations on Geriatric Emergency Medicine to be disseminated across Europe.
Methods: A group of multi-disciplinary experts in the field of Geriatric Emergency Medicine in Europe was assembled. Using a modified Delphi procedure, a prioritized list of topics related to Geriatric Emergency Medicine was created. Next, a multi-disciplinary group of nurses, geriatricians and emergency physicians performed a review of recent guidelines and literature to create recommendations. These recommendations were voted upon by a group of experts and placed on visually attractive posters. The expert group identified the following eight subject areas to develop expert recommendations on: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in the Emergency Department (ED), age/frailty adjusted risk stratification, delirium and cognitive impairment, medication reviews in the ED for older adults, family involvement, ED environment, silver trauma, end of life care in the acute setting.
Results: Eight posters with expert clinical recommendations on the most important topics in Geriatric Emergency Medicine are now available through https://posters.geriemeurope.eu/ .
Conclusion: Expert clinical recommendations for Geriatric Emergency Medicine may help to improve care for older patients in the Emergency Department and are ready for dissemination across Europe
Recursion Relations for One-Loop Gravity Amplitudes
We study the application of recursion relations to the calculation of finite
one-loop gravity amplitudes. It is shown explicitly that the known four, five,
and six graviton one-loop amplitudes for which the external legs have identical
outgoing helicities, and the four graviton amplitude with helicities (-,+,+,+)
can be derived from simple recursion relations. The latter amplitude is derived
by introducing a one-loop three-point vertex of gravitons of positive helicity,
which is the counterpart in gravity of the one-loop three-plus vertex in
Yang-Mills. We show that new issues arise for the five point amplitude with
helicities (-,+,+,+,+), where the application of known methods does not appear

Topological methods in zero-sum Ramsey theory
A cornerstone result of Erd\H os, Ginzburg, and Ziv (EGZ) states that any
sequence of elements in contains a zero-sum subsequence
of length . While algebraic techniques have predominated in deriving many
deep generalizations of this theorem over the past sixty years, here we
introduce topological approaches to zero-sum problems which have proven
fruitful in other combinatorial contexts. Our main result (1) is a topological
criterion for determining when any -coloring of an -uniform
hypergraph contains a zero-sum hyperedge. In addition to applications for
Kneser hypergraphs, for complete hypergraphs our methods recover Olson's
generalization of the EGZ theorem for arbitrary finite groups. Furthermore, we
(2) give a fractional generalization of the EGZ theorem with applications to
balanced set families and (3) provide a constrained EGZ theorem which imposes
combinatorial restrictions on zero-sum sequences in the original result.Comment: 18 page
The age-redshift relation for Luminous Red Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present a detailed analysis of 17,852 quiescent, Luminous Red Galaxies
(LRGs) selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release Seven (DR7)
spanning a redshift range of 0.0 < z < 0.4. These galaxies are co-added into
four equal bins of velocity dispersion and luminosity to produce high
signal-to-noise spectra (>100A^{-1}), thus facilitating accurate measurements
of the standard Lick absorption-line indices. In particular, we have carefully
corrected and calibrated these indices onto the commonly used Lick/IDS system,
thus allowing us to compare these data with other measurements in the
literature, and derive realistic ages, metallicities ([Z/H]) and alpha-element
abundance ratios ([alpha/Fe]) for these galaxies using Simple Stellar
Population (SSP) models. We use these data to study the relationship of these
galaxy parameters with redshift, and find little evidence for evolution in
metallicity or alpha-elements (especially for our intermediate mass samples).
This demonstrates that our subsamples are consistent with pure passive evolving
(i.e. no chemical evolution) and represent a homogeneous population over this
redshift range. We also present the age-redshift relation for these LRGs and
clearly see a decrease in their age with redshift (5 Gyrs over the redshift
range studied here) which is fully consistent with the cosmological lookback
times in a concordance Lambda CDM universe. We also see that our most massive
sample of LRGs is the youngest compared to the lower mass galaxies. We provide
these data now to help future cosmological and galaxy evolution studies of
LRGs, and provide in the appendices of this paper the required methodology and
information to calibrate SDSS spectra onto the Lick/IDS system.Comment: 26 pages, with several appendices containing data. Accepted for
