    Zelda: Fitting Lyman Alpha Line Profiles using Deep Learning

    We present zELDA (redshift Estimator for Line profiles of Distant Lyman Alpha emitters), an open-source code to fit Lyman α (Ly α) line profiles. The main motivation is to provide the community with an easy to use and fast tool to analyse Ly α line profiles uniformly to improve the understating of Ly α emitting galaxies. zELDA is based online profiles of the commonly used \u27shell-model\u27 pre-computed with the full Monte Carlo radiative transfer code LyaRT. Via interpolation between these spectra and the addition of noise, we assemble a suite of realistic Ly α spectra which we use to train a deep neural network. We show that the neural network can predict the model parameters to high accuracy (e.g.â‰Č 0.34 dex H i column density for R ∌12 000) and thus allows for a significant speedup over existing fitting methods. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the potential of zELDA by fitting 97 observed Ly α line profiles from the LASD data base. Comparing the fitted value with the measured systemic redshift of these sources, we find that Ly α determines their rest frame Ly α wavelength with a remarkable good accuracy of ∌0.3 Å (∌ 75 km, s-1). Comparing the predicted outflow properties and the observed Ly α luminosity and equivalent width, we find several possible trends. For example, we find an anticorrelation between the Ly α luminosity and the outflow neutral hydrogen column density, which might be explained by the radiative transfer process within galaxies

    High Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry Measurement of Bimatoprost, Latanoprost and Travoprost in Eyelash Enhancing Cosmetic Serums

    Most common prostaglandin analogs, bimatoprost, latanoprost and travoprost, are licensed for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, but their non approved use as eyelash enhancers is becoming popular, especially in patients with eyelashes hypotrichosis. A fast and sensitive high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for the measurement of bimatoprost, latanoprost and travoprost in cosmetic serums freely web-sold to increase eyelash length, thickness and darkness. The analytes and the internal standard (reserpine) were separated by reversed phase chromatography with 5 mM ammonium acetate with 0.02% formic acid (mobile phase A) and 5 mM ammonium acetate in acetonitrile/water (95/5; v/v) with 0.02% formic acid (mobile phase B) by gradient elution and detected with tandem mass spectrometry operated in multiple reaction monitoring mode. Linearity between 1 and 500 ÎŒg/g shows good correlation coefficients (r2 = 0.99) for all substances. Analytical recovery of analytes under investigation were always higher than 90% and intra-assay and inter-assay precision and accuracy always better than 11%.     Main features and control strategies to reduce overcrowding in emergency departments. A systematic review of the literature

    Purpose: Overcrowding is a problem that affects emergency departments (ED) all over the world; it occurs due to a disproportion between user demand and the physical, human and structural resources available. Essential prerequisites to assessing and managing the phenomenon are its accurate measurement and an understanding of its impact. The objective of this systematic review is to identify the characteristics of the problem, analyzing the proposed strategies aimed at improving patient flow, delay in services provided and overcrowding of emergency departments. Methods: To achieve our objectives, a manual computerized search was performed in the bibliographic databases using as keywords “Emergency Department”, “Overcrowding”, “Emergency Room”, “Emergency Service”, “Emergency Unit”“,Emergency Ward”, “Emergency Outpatient Unit”, “Emergency Hospital”, “Crowding”, “Mass Gathering”, “Management” and “Comprehensive Health Care”. Two independent reviewers analyzed abstracts, titles and full text articles for admissibility, according to the selected inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The process lead to include 19 articles. It was possible to group the solutions proposed in five categories: work organization, investment in primary care, creation of new dedicated professional figures, work and structural modifications and implementation of predictive simulation models using mathematical algorithms. Conclusion: The most effective measures to guarantee an improvement in the flow of patients are represented by both improving the efficiency of human resources and by developing predictive mathematical models, regardless of the type of hospital and its location. Considering the complexity of EDs and the multiple characteristics of overcrowding and that the causes of crowding are different and site-specific, a careful examination of the specifics of each ED is necessary to identify improving fields

    Knowledge space oddity: How to increase the intensity and relevance of the technological progress of European regions

    This work contributes to previous research on the relationship between specific features of a regional knowledge space and the technological progress of the region. In particular, the main element of originality of this work is to have singled out the determinants of the technological progress intensity and relevance. We acknowledge the importance of knowledge assets for new knowledge production, and we identify path-dependent processes that allow a region to become increasingly competitive in terms of innovation potential. In particular, adopting an evolutionary view of regional development, we describe the regional knowledge space through four crucial characteristics: 1) technological knowledge base, 2) technological cumulativeness, 3) technological diversification , and 4) technological relatedness. We then measure to what extent each of the knowledge space's characteristics differently affects the technological progress intensity and relevance of the region. A longitudinal study of 269 European regions over the period 1996-2012 was organized using data from REGPAT and Eurostat databases. Results show that technological relatedness affects positively both the intensity and relevance of the technological progress of European regions and that the other components of the knowledge space show a different impact on the two features of the technological progress. Finally, implications for EU policies supporting and stimulating regional technological progress are discussed

    Schoolchildren’s habits and knowledge about oral health

    Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the habits and knowledge of schoolchildren who take part in a preventive educational program developed by “Universidade Federal de Alfenas”, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: The sample was composed of 386 boys and girls, regularly enrolled in four public schools in Alfenas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in which the program has been implemented. The criterion for a schoolchild’s participation in the study was having attended the program for four consecutive years. Data were collected through a questionnaire about oral health. Chi-square test, with significance level of 5%, was used to assess whether there were differences concerning the knowledge acquired. Results: As regards caries transmissibility, 39.1% answered that caries is a disease, but that it is not transmitted. Most of the interviewees, 88.6%, use their own toothbrushes to brush their teeth. About the use of dental floss, 41.97% of the interviewees answered that its function is “to remove food remains and bacterial plaque between teeth”. When questioned about the usefulness of fluoride use, 53.62% answered that its purpose is “to avoid caries in the teeth”. Conclusion: After the analysis of the results, it can be concluded that some points in the program need further emphasis. However, the Oral Health Education Program has met its objective of transmitting knowledge to schoolchildren, who demonstrated a good level of information about oral health

    Two novel C-terminus RUNX2 mutations in two cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) patients impairing p53 expression

    Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), a dominantly inherited skeletal disease, is characterized by a variable phenotype ranging from dental alterations to severe skeletal defects. Either de novo or inherited mutations in the RUNX2 gene have been identified in most CCD patients. Transcription factor RUNX2, the osteogenic master gene, plays a central role in the commitment of mesenchymal stem cells to osteoblast lineage. With the aim to analyse the effects of RUNX2 mutations in CCD patients, we investigated RUNX2 gene expression and the osteogenic potential of two CCD patients’ cells. In addition, with the aim to better understand how RUNX2 mutations interfere with osteogenic differentiation, we performed string analyses to identify proteins interacting with RUNX2 and analysed p53 expression levels. Our findings demonstrated for the first time that, in addition to the alteration of downstream gene expression, RUNX2 mutations impair p53 expression affecting osteogenic maturation. In conclusion, the present work provides new insights into the role of RUNX2 mutations in CCD patients and suggests that an in-depth analysis of the RUNX2-associated gene network may contribute to better understand the complex molecular and phenotypic alterations in mutant subjects
