    Asymmetric correlations and hedging effectiveness of cryptocurrencies for the European stock market

    The aim of the paper is twofold: first, to examine the hedging effectiveness of cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency portfolios for European equities in bearish and bullish market conditions, and second, to contrast cryptocurrencies with gold as a safe haven asset. To this end, daily data from 2018 to 2021 were employed in a linear and nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) framework. The findings have significant implications for investors, financial intermediaries and regulators. First, none of the cryptocurrencies under investigation acts as a safe haven for the European stock market. Second, an asymmetric relationship was found between Bitcoin / Ethereum returns on the one hand and stock market returns on the other, indicating the risk of large joint losses during periods of market turmoil. Third, cryptocurrency portfolios appear to perform better than Bitcoin and Ethereum for diversification purposes. Fourth, among cryptocurrency portfolios, the portfolio made up of the top ten cryptocurrencies appear to be the best in terms of diversification benefits and the risk-return profile. Finally, during the 2020 bear market conditions, not even gold acted as a safe haven for European stocks, highlighting the need to investigate alternative safe haven assets to mitigate portfolio risks

    Survey of vector-borne agents in feral cats and first report of Babesia gibsoni in cats on St Kitts, West Indies

    Background: As there is little data on vector-borne diseases of cats in the Caribbean region and even around the world, we tested feral cats from St Kitts by PCR to detect infections with Babesia, Ehrlichia and spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) and surveyed them for antibodies to Rickettsia rickettsii and Ehrlichia canis. Results: Whole blood was collected from apparently healthy feral cats during spay/ neuter campaigns on St Kitts in 2011 (N = 68) and 2014 (N = 52). Sera from the 52 cats from 2014 were used to detect antibodies to Ehrlichia canis and Rickettsia rickettsii using indirect fluorescent antibody tests and DNA extracted from whole blood of a total of 119 cats (68 from 2011, and 51 from 2014) was used for PCRs for Babesia, Ehrlichia and Rickettsia. We could not amplify DNA of SFG Rickettsia in any of the samples but found DNA of E. canis in 5% (6/119), Babesia vogeli in 13% (15/119), Babesia gibsoni in 4% (5/119), mixed infections with B. gibsoni and B. vogeli in 3% (3/119), and a poorly characterized Babesia sp. in 1% (1/119). Overall, 10% of the 52 cats we tested by IFA for E. canis were positive while 42% we tested by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) for R. rickettsii antigens were positive. Conclusions: Our study provides the first evidence that cats can be infected with B. gibsoni and also indicates that cats in the Caribbean may be commonly exposed to other vector-borne agents including SFGR, E. canis and B. vogeli. Animal health workers should be alerted to the possibility of clinical infections in their patients while public health workers should be alerted to the possibility that zoonotic SFGR are likely circulating in the region

    Evaluation of E-Health Applications for Paediatric Patients with Refractory Epilepsy and Maintained on Ketogenic Diet

    E-health technologies improve healthcare quality and disease management. The aim of this study was to develop a ketogenic diet management app as well as a website about this dietary treatment and to evaluate the benefits of giving caregivers access to various web materials designed for paediatric patients with refractory epilepsy. Forty families participated in the questionnaire survey, from January 2016 to March 2016. All caregivers were exposed to paper-based materials about the ketogenic diet, whereas only 22 received the app, called KetApp, and videos produced by dieticians. Caregivers with free access to web materials were more satisfied than the others with the informative material provided by the centre (p 64 0.001, Mann\u2013Whitney test). Indeed, they showed a better attitude towards treatment, and they became more aware of dietary management in comparison to the control group (p 64 0.001). Moreover, caregivers provided with web materials were stimulated to pursue the treatment (p = 0.002) and to introduce it to their children and other people (p = 0.001). Additionally, caregivers supplied with web materials were more willing to help other families in choosing the ketogenic diet (p = 0.004). Overall, these findings indicate that web materials are beneficial for caregivers of paediatric patients with refractory epilepsy in our centres. Thus, the use of e-health applications could be a promising tool in the daily aspects of ketogenic diet management, and it is especially of value in the attempt to start or maintain the diet during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis

    DRY-POWDER OF CHITOSAN-COATED LIPID-CORE NANOCAPSULES CONTAINING DAPSONE: DEVELOPMENT, LASER DIFFRACTION CHARACTERIZATION AND ANALYTICAL QUANTIFICATION

    Analytical techniques are critical for ensuring physical and chemical stability of a drug both for assessing the stability of drug molecules and for quantifying and identifying the drug content in products. We proposed the development of dry-powders of lipid-core nanocapsules containing dapsone and coated with chitosan, as well as, the analytical quantification of dapsone in dry-powders with 1% and 2% (m/v) of leucine by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Size is the most relevant physicochemical property of nanoparticulated drug delivery systems. In this context, our results demonstrated that during the powders redispersion in water, could be observed that the mean particle diameters (DAP-LNC-CS-L1 and DAP-LNC-CS-L2) decreased with redispersion times increase. The spray-drying of the lipid-core nanocapsule formulations showed yields ranging from 58 ± 1.0 % (DAP-LNC-CS-L1) to 61 ± 1.5 % (DAP-LNC-CS-L2) indicating an efficient drying process. In this context, the analytical quantifications of dapsone in the dry powders of nanocapsules by HPLC showed that the dapsone content ranged from 92 ± 1.4% (DAP-LNC-CS-L2) to 95 ± 0.8% (DAP-LNC-CS-L1). Can be concluded that spray-drying process of DAP-LNC-CS-L1 and DAP-LNC-CS-L2 formulations showed an efficient aqueous dispersion of nanocapsule powders and the analytical quantification of dapsone in spray-dryed powders were higher than 90%

    Hepatitis C virus infection and type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and diabetes mellitus are two major public health problems that cause devastating health and financial burdens worldwide. Diabetes can be classified into two major types: type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and T2DM. T2DM is a common endocrine disorder that encompasses multifactorial mechanisms, and T1DM is an immunologically mediated disease. Many epidemiological studies have shown an association between T2DM and chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection. The processes through which CHC is associated with T2DM seem to involve direct viral effects, insulin resistance, proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other immune-mediated mechanisms. Few data have been reported on the association of CHC and T1DM and reports on the potential association between T1DM and acute HCV infection are even rarer. A small number of studies indicate that interferon-α therapy can stimulate pancreatic autoimmunity and in certain cases lead to the development of T1DM. Diabetes and CHC have important interactions. Diabetic CHC patients have an increased risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma compared with non-diabetic CHC subjects. However, clinical trials on HCV-positive patients have reported improvements in glucose metabolism after antiviral treatment. Further studies are needed to improve prevention policies and to foster adequate and cost-effective programmes for the surveillance and treatment of diabetic CHC patients

    Asymmetry in sleep spindles and motor outcome in infants with unilateral brain injury

    Aim To determine whether interhemispheric difference in sleep spindles in infants with perinatal unilateral brain injury could link to a pathological network reorganization that underpins the development of unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Method This was a multicentre retrospective study of 40 infants (19 females, 21 males) with unilateral brain injury. Sleep spindles were detected and quantified with an automated algorithm from electroencephalograph records performed at 2 months to 5 months of age. The clinical outcomes after 18 months were compared to spindle power asymmetry (SPA) between hemispheres in different brain regions. Results We found a significantly increased SPA in infants who later developed unilateral CP (n=13, with the most robust interhemispheric difference seen in the central spindles. The best individual-level prediction of unilateral CP was seen in the centro-occipital spindles with an overall accuracy of 93%. An empiric cut-off level for SPA at 0.65 gave a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value of 93% for later development of unilateral CP. Interpretation Our data suggest that automated analysis of interhemispheric SPA provides a potential biomarker of unilateral CP at a very early age. This holds promise for guiding the early diagnostic process in infants with a perinatally identified brain injury.Peer reviewe

    Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and of symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients undergoing colonoscopy

    Introduction Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined by metabolic and cardio-vascular impairments and is frequently associated with anxiety and depressive disorders. Both MetS and anxiety-depressive syndromes feature similar systemic inflammatory alterations. Inflammation of the large bowel is also a key factor for the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Objective To measure the prevalence of MetS and symptoms of anxiety and depression among patients undergoing colonoscopy. Methods Cross-sectional study. Patients undergoing colonoscopy aged 40 or more, with negative history for neoplasia or inflammatory bowel disease, were enrolled. Data collected: colonoscopy outcome, presence/absence of MetS (IDF and ATP III criteria), presence/absence of depressive and anxiety symptoms assessed with HADS. Results The sample was made up of 53 patients (female 24, 45.3%). Mean age was 60.66 ± 9.08. At least one adenoma was found to 23 patients (43.3%). Prevalence of MetS ranged from 34% to 36% (ATP III and IDF criteria, respectively). Prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 20% and 33%, respectively. Conclusion Prevalence of MetS, anxiety and depressive symptoms among patients undergoing colonoscopy was higher than in the general population

    Multimodal investigations of trans-endothelial cell trafficking under condition of disrupted blood-brain barrier integrity

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Stem cells or immune cells targeting the central nervous system (CNS) bear significant promises for patients affected by CNS disorders. Brain or spinal cord delivery of therapeutic cells is limited by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which remains one of the recognized rate-limiting steps. Osmotic BBB disruption (BBBD) has been shown to improve small molecule chemotherapy for brain tumors, but successful delivery of cells in conjunction with BBBD has never been reported.</p> <p>We have used a clinically relevant model (pig) of BBBD to attempt brain delivery of TALL-104, a human leukemic T cell line. TALL-104 cells are potent tumor killers and have demonstrated potential for systemic tumor therapy. The pig model used is analogous to the clinical BBBD procedure. Cells were injected in the carotid artery after labeling with the MRI T1 contrast agent GdHPDO3A. Contrast CT scans were used to quantify BBBD and MRI was used to detect Gd<sup>++</sup>-loaded cells in the brain. Transcranial Doppler was used to monitor cerebral blood flow. EEG recordings were used to detect seizures. Immunocytochemical detection (Cresyl Violet, anti-human CD8 for TALL-104, Evans Blue for BBB damage, GFAP and NEUN) was performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At the concentration used TALL-104 cells were tolerated. Incomplete BBBD did not allow cell entry into the brain. MRI scans at 24 and 48 hours post-injection allowed visualization of topographically segregated cells in the hemisphere that underwent successful BBBD. Perivascular location of TALL-104 was confirmed in the BBBD hemisphere by Cresyl violet and CD8 immunocytochemistry. No significant alteration in CBF or EEG activity was recorded during cell injections.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data show that targeted CNS cell therapy requires blood-brain barrier disruption. MRI-detectable cytotoxic anti-neoplastic cells can be forced to transverse the BBB and accumulate in the perivascular space. The virtual absence of toxicity, the high anti-tumor activity of TALL-104, and the clinical feasibility of human osmotic BBBD suggest that this approach may be adopted to treat brain or spinal cord tumors. In addition, BBBD may favor CNS entry of other cells that normally lack CNS tropism.</p
