Vacuum stability, neutrinos, and dark matter
Motivated by the discovery hint of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs mass around
125 GeV at the LHC, we study the vacuum stability and perturbativity bounds on
Higgs scalar of the SM extensions including neutrinos and dark matter (DM).
Guided by the SM gauge symmetry and the minimal changes in the SM Higgs
potential we consider two extensions of neutrino sector (Type-I and Type-III
seesaw mechanisms) and DM sector (a real scalar singlet (darkon) and minimal
dark matter (MDM)) respectively. The darkon contributes positively to the
function of the Higgs quartic coupling and can stabilize the
SM vacuum up to high scale. Similar to the top quark in the SM we find the
cause of instability is sensitive to the size of new Yukawa couplings between
heavy neutrinos and Higgs boson, namely, the scale of seesaw mechanism. MDM and
Type-III seesaw fermion triplet, two nontrivial representations of
group, will bring the additional positive contributions to the gauge coupling
renormalization group (RG) evolution and would also help to stabilize
the electroweak vacuum up to high scale.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures; published versio
EXPANDED BED ADSORPTION OF BROMELAIN (EC 3.4.22.33) FROM Ananas comosus CRUDE EXTRACT
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq)This work focuses on the adsorption of Bromelain in expanded bed conditions, such as the adsorption kinetics parameters. The adsorption kinetics parameters showed that after 40 minutes equilibrium was achieved and maximum adsorption capacity was 6.11 U per resin mL. However, the maximum adsorption capacity was only determined by measuring the adsorption isotherm. Only by the Langmuir model the maximum adsorption capacity, Qm, and dissociation constant, kd, values could be estimated as 9.18 U/mL and 0.591, respectively, at 25 degrees C and 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer pH 7.5. A column made of glass with an inner diameter of 1 cm was used for the expanded bed adsorption (EBA). The residence time was reduced 10 fold by increasing the expansion degree 2.5 times; nonetheless, the plate number (N) value was reduced only 2 fold. After adsorption, the bromelain was eluted in packed bed mode, with a downward flow. The purification factor was about 13 fold and the total protein was reduced 4 fold. EBA showed to be feasible for purification of bromelain.261149157Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq
The Minimal Scale Invariant Extension of the Standard Model
We perform a systematic analysis of an extension of the Standard Model that
includes a complex singlet scalar field and is scale invariant at the tree
level. We call such a model the Minimal Scale Invariant extension of the
Standard Model (MSISM). The tree-level scale invariance of the model is
explicitly broken by quantum corrections, which can trigger electroweak
symmetry breaking and potentially provide a mechanism for solving the gauge
hierarchy problem. Even though the scale invariant Standard Model is not a
realistic scenario, the addition of a complex singlet scalar field may result
in a perturbative and phenomenologically viable theory. We present a complete
classification of the flat directions which may occur in the classical scalar
potential of the MSISM. After calculating the one-loop effective potential of
the MSISM, we investigate a number of representative scenarios and determine
their scalar boson mass spectra, as well as their perturbatively allowed
parameter space compatible with electroweak precision data. We discuss the
phenomenological implications of these scenarios, in particular, whether they
realize explicit or spontaneous CP violation, neutrino masses or provide dark
matter candidates. In particular, we find a new minimal scale-invariant model
of maximal spontaneous CP violation which can stay perturbative up to
Planck-mass energy scales, without introducing an unnaturally large hierarchy
in the scalar-potential couplings.Comment: 71 pages, 34 eps figures, numerical error corrected, clarifying

Gender-dependent differences in plasma matrix metalloproteinase-8 elevated in pulmonary tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health pandemic and greater understanding of underlying pathogenesis is required to develop novel therapeutic and diagnostic approaches. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are emerging as key effectors of tissue destruction in TB but have not been comprehensively studied in plasma, nor have gender differences been investigated. We measured the plasma concentrations of MMPs in a carefully characterised, prospectively recruited clinical cohort of 380 individuals. The collagenases, MMP-1 and MMP-8, were elevated in plasma of patients with pulmonary TB relative to healthy controls, and MMP-7 (matrilysin) and MMP-9 (gelatinase B) were also increased. MMP-8 was TB-specific (p<0.001), not being elevated in symptomatic controls (symptoms suspicious of TB but active disease excluded). Plasma MMP-8 concentrations inversely correlated with body mass index. Plasma MMP-8 concentration was 1.51-fold higher in males than females with TB (p<0.05) and this difference was not due to greater disease severity in men. Gender-specific analysis of MMPs demonstrated consistent increase in MMP-1 and -8 in TB, but MMP-8 was a better discriminator for TB in men. Plasma collagenases are elevated in pulmonary TB and differ between men and women. Gender must be considered in investigation of TB immunopathology and development of novel diagnostic markers
Distribution of populations of broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris, Daudin 1802, Alligatoridae) in the São Francisco River basin, Brazil
We surveyed populations of the broad-snouted caiman, Caiman latirostris, throughout the São Francisco River basin, from Três Marias reservoir, State of Minas Gerais, to the river delta, at the boarder of Sergipe and Alagoas states. We registered the occurrence of crocodilians in 61% of all surveyed localities (n = 64), in which the presence of C. latirostris was confirmed in 44% of the surveyed sites. Caimans occurred in both lentic and lotic habitats, although there was a preference for small dams, oxbow lakes and wetlands. Despite the hunting pressure and human impact on natural habitats, our results indicate that the populations of C. latirostris in the São Francisco basin are not fragmented
Effective Dark Matter Model: Relic density, CDMS II, Fermi LAT and LHC
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search recently announced the observation of two
signal events with a 77% confidence level. Although statistically inconclusive,
it is nevertheless suggestive. In this work we present a model-independent
analysis on the implication of a positive signal in dark matter scattering off
nuclei. Assuming the interaction between (scalar, fermion or vector) dark
matter and the standard model induced by unknown new physics at the scale
, we examine various dimension-6 tree-level induced operators and
constrain them using the current experimental data, e.g. the WMAP data of the
relic abundance, CDMS II direct detection of the spin-independent scattering,
and indirect detection data (Fermi LAT cosmic gamma-ray), etc. Finally, the LHC
reach is also explored
