ON THE FLOW PAST RECTANGULAR CYLINDERS: PHYSICAL ASPECTS AND NUMERICAL SIMULATION

    Get PDF
This paper concerns with unsteady incompressible flows around rectangular cylinders with side ratio varying from 1 to 10. Phenomenological aspects are discussed and numerical simulations are performed using a SIMPLEC finite volume code. A third-order QUICK scheme is employed for the advective terms in the Navier-Stokes equations, while a second-order fully implicit method is used for the time discretization. For validation purpose, preliminary simulations are carried out at Re = 300. Afterwards, the flow patterns and the wake periodic features are examined at Re = 1,000, 5,000, and 22,000, for which turbulent effects should not be neglected. In some of those cases, large-eddy simulation (LES) is employed, using the classical sub-grid Smagorinsky model. Important physical mechanisms determining vortex shedding frequency are placed in evidence. The present predictions are compared with numerical and experimental results from other works and a good agreement is reached

The prevalence and clinical forms of Trypanosoma cruzi were evaluated among blood donor candidates attended at a general hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from January 1997 to April 1999. The investigation was done by means of the indirect hemagglutination test and was confirmed via ELISA. Data were collected from clinical examinations, conventional electrocardiogram, chest radiography and echocar-diography. The results showed that despite Trypanosoma cruzi prevalence of 1.17% (128 patients), mainly in males aged 40 years or over, 70.8% of these patients, mainly males aged 19 to 39 years, demonstrated abnormalities that allowed the diagnosis of cardiopathy and/or esophagopathy. This once again corroborates the importance of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in urban centers

Classical and quantum wormholes in a flat Λ\Lambda-decaying cosmology

We study the classical and quantum wormholes for a flat {\it Euclidean} Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric with a perfect fluid including an ordinary matter source plus a source playing the role of dark energy (decaying cosmological term). It is shown that classical wormholes exist for this model and the quantum version of such wormholes are consistent with the Hawking-Page conjecture for quantum wormholes as solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in IJT

A hybrid MPPT algorithm based on DE-IC for photovoltaic systems under partial shading conditions

This paper presents a hybrid maximum power point tracking (MPPT), which combines a metaheuristic algorithm and a traditional MPPT method applied in a photovoltaic system operating under partial shading conditions. The MPPTs based on traditional methods are not able to track the global maxi-mum power point (GMPP) when partial shadings occur. Thus, MPPT algorithms based on metaheuristic algorithms, which are used for global optimization, have presented efficiency to extract the maximum power from photovoltaic arrays. However, these methods are random, resulting in large power oscillations in transients of small variations in solar irradiance. Therefore, this paper proposes the metaheuristic algorithm called Differential Evolution (DE) to seek and track the GMPP. After the DE convergence, the MPPT algorithm is switched to Incremental Conductance (IC) in order to refine the tracking. The effectiveness of the algorithm is proved through simulation results. Furthermore, comparative analyses are provided for each algorithm (DE and IC) to evaluate their performances in the PV system
