Large angle magnetization dynamics measured by time-resolved ferromagnetic resonance
A time-resolved ferromagnetic resonance technique was used to investigate the
magnetization dynamics of a 10 nm thin Permalloy film. The experiment consisted
of a sequence of magnetic field pulses at a repetition rate equal to the
magnetic systems resonance frequency. We compared data obtained by this
technique with conventional pulsed inductive microwave magnetometry. The
results for damping and frequency response obtained by these two different
methods coincide in the limit of a small angle excitation. However, when
applying large amplitude field pulses, the magnetization had a non-linear
response. We speculate that one possible cause of the nonlinearity is related
to self-amplification of incoherence, known as the Suhl instabilities.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR
Seismic vulnerability assessment of the old city centre of Seixal, Portugal
The seismic vulnerability assessment of old traditional masonry building stocks, in a seismic risk mitigation perspective, is truly essential not only for buildings with recognized historical and patrimonial value, but also, in relation to regular buildings. In this sense, this paper approaches the issue of the seismic vulnerability assessment of masonry buildings through the application of a simplified methodology to building stock of the old city centre of Seixal, Portugal. This methodology is based on a vulnerability index, suitable in the evaluation of damage and in the creation of large scale loss scenarios (economical and human). Over 500 buildings were evaluated in accordance with the referred methodology and the results obtained were then integrated into a Geographical Information System tool. The integration of this kind of vulnerability and loss results into a GIS tool allows that city councils or regional authorities make their decisions based on a global view of the site under analysis, which led to more accurate and faster decisions either in terms of risk mitigation strategies or rehabilitation plans. This tool can also assumes great importance in the construction of safety and rescue plans
Vulnerability assessment of urban building stock: a hierarchic approach
In the last decades the evaluation of the seismic risk are of rising concern, considered essential in the activity and
definition of strategy planning and urban management. The evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of the existent building stock
in the perspective of the seismic risk mitigation should not be placed only in relation to the isolated buildings of relevant
historical and cultural importance, but also, in relation to the agglomerate of buildings in urban centres. The chronological
construction process frequently results in characteristic heterogeneity of masonry and wall connection quality. In addition,
buildings do not constitute independent units given that they share the mid-walls with adjacent buildings and the façade walls are
aligned. This way, as post-seismic observations proved, buildings do not have an independent structural behaviour, but they
interact amongst themselves, mainly for horizontal actions and so the structural performance should be studied at the level of the
aggregate and not only for each isolated building. In most cases, for masonry structures there is no need for sophisticated
dynamic analyses for seismic resistance verification or vulnerability assessment. This is even more relevant when an assessment
at the level of a city centre is pursued. In this work, the results of evaluation of the vulnerability will be presented in accordance
to three proposed methodologies based on a vulnerability index that consequently allows the evaluation of damage and creation
of loss scenarios (economical and human) not only at the level of the building and its façade walls but also at the level of the
aggregates. It will be discussed and evaluated the application of the referred methodologies and its integration in an SIG
platform
Tuned liquid dampers simulation for earthquake response control of buildings
This paper is focused on the study of an earthquake protection system, the Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD), which
can, if adequately designed, reduce earthquake demands on buildings. This positive effect is accomplished taking
into account the oscillation of the free surface of a fluid inside a tank (sloshing). The behaviour of an isolated
Tuned Liquid Damper, subjected to a sinusoidal excitation at its base, with different displacement amplitudes,
was studied by finite element analysis. The efficiency of the TLD in improving the seismic response of an existing building, representative of modern architecture buildings in southern European countries was also evaluated based on linear dynamic analyses
Electric properties of the baryon anti-decuplet in the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model
We investigate the electric form factors and charge radii of the pentaquark
baryons within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. We consider the
rotational and linear corrections, assuming isospin symmetry and
employing the symmetry-conserving quantization. The flavor-decomposed charge
densities of the are presented. The electric form factors and charge
radii of the charged pentaquark baryons turn out to be very similar to those of
the corresponding octet baryons. The charge radii of the neutral pentaquark
baryons are obtained to be very tiny and positive. The strange electric form
factor of the pentaquark proton is shown to be larger than the corresponding
one of the proton by around 20%. We also present the charge radii of the baryon
decuplet for comparison.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
The M2/M5 BPS Partition Functions from Supergravity
In the framework of the AdS/CFT duality, we calculate the supersymmetric
partition function of the superconformal field theories living in the world
volume of either -branes or -branes. We used the dual
supergravity partition function in a saddle point approximation over
supersymmetric Black Holes. Since our BHs are written in asymptotically global
co-ordinates, the dual SCFTs are in for . The
resulting partition function shows phase transitions, constraints on the phase
space and allowed us to identify unstable BPS Black hole in the phase.
These configurations should correspond to unstable configurations in the dual
theory. We also report an intriguing relation between the most general Witten
Index, computed in the above theories, and our BPS partition functions.Comment: 9 pages, 2 columns, 4 figures, revtex, typos corrected, reference

Graded-index optical fiber emulator of an interacting three-atom system: illumination control of particle statistics and classical non-separability
We show that a system of three trapped ultracold and strongly interacting
atoms in one-dimension can be emulated using an optical fiber with a
graded-index profile and thin metallic slabs. While the wave-nature of single
quantum particles leads to direct and well known analogies with classical
optics, for interacting many-particle systems with unrestricted statistics such
analoga are not straightforward. Here we study the symmetries present in the
fiber eigenstates by using discrete group theory and show that, by spatially
modulating the incident field, one can select the atomic statistics, i.e.,
emulate a system of three bosons, fermions or two bosons or fermions plus an
additional distinguishable particle. We also show that the optical system is
able to produce classical non-separability resembling that found in the
analogous atomic system.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Probing ferroelectricity in highly conducting materials through their elastic response: persistence of ferroelectricity in metallic BaTiO3-d
The question whether ferroelectricity (FE) may coexist with a metallic or
highly conducting state, or rather it must be suppressed by the screening from
the free charges, is the focus of a rapidly increasing number of theoretical
studies and is finally receiving positive experimental responses. The issue is
closely related to the thermoelectric and multiferroic (also magnetic)
applications of FE materials, where the electrical conductivity is required or
spurious. In these circumstances, the traditional methods for probing
ferroelectricity are hampered or made totally ineffective by the free charges,
which screen the polar response to an external electric field. This fact may
explain why more than 40 years passed between the first proposals of FE metals
and the present experimental and theoretical activity. The measurement of the
elastic moduli, Young's modulus in the present case, versus temperature is an
effective method for studying the influence of doping on a FE transition
because the elastic properties are unaffected by electrical conductivity. In
this manner, it is shown that the FE transitions of BaTiO3-d are not suppressed
by electron doping through O vacancies; only the onset temperatures are
depressed, but the magnitudes of the softenings, and hence of the piezoelectric
activity, are initially even increased

Prognosis: Closed-box analysis of network protocol implementations
We present Prognosis, a framework offering automated closed-box learning and analysis of models of network protocol implementations. Prognosis can learn models that vary in abstraction level from simple deterministic automata to models containing data operations, such as register updates, and can be used to unlock a variety of analysis techniques - model checking temporal properties, computing differences between models of two implementations of the same protocol, or improving testing via model-based test generation. Prognosis is modular and easily adaptable to different protocols (e.g. TCP and QUIC) and their implementations. We use Prognosis to learn models of (parts of) three QUIC implementations - Quiche (Cloudflare), Google QUIC, and Facebook mvfst - and use these models to analyse the differences between the various implementations. Our analysis provides insights into different design choices and uncovers potential bugs. Concretely, we have found critical bugs in multiple QUIC implementations, which have been acknowledged by the developers
