Adaptation to climate change at local level in Europe: An overview
Europe’s climate change vulnerability pushes for initiatives such as the European Adaptation Strategy and the associated Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. What are the triggers and barriers, for which sectors and for which risks and how is adaptation funded? This paper examines 147 Local Adaptation Strategies in Europe. Key triggers were incentives via research projects, implementation of EU policies and the increasing frequency of extreme climate events. Insufficient resources, capacity, political commitment and uncertainty were the main barriers. Prioritized sectors reflected the main local vulnerabilities - flood protection and water management, built environment and urban planning. Differing patterns of adaptation planning and adaptive capacity were identified among different regions in Europe. Large municipalities generally fund adaptation locally, whereas international and national funding appears to be more important for adaptation in less urban or densely populated territories. The database of LAS described in the present study can be expanded and used to increase the understanding of and promotion of local adaptation action in Europe and beyond

Companies' Responsiveness in Facing Supply Chain Breakdowns: The Role of Lean Manufacturing
Crisis times result in supply chain instabilities but represent a unique opportunity to test organizational theories and measure the effectiveness of management approaches in exceptional times. The main goal of this research is to study the role of lean manufacturing (LM) to improve the company's response in times of unprecedented crisis and in facing challenges in the post-COVID-19 world. A survey was conducted with 202 manufacturing companies and then analyzed using structural equation modeling. Our main findings suggest that LM's excellence is not lost during crisis times and that the performance of lean companies can be sustained during crises. Lean companies have a culture of problem-solving and innovation that makes them more responsive during crisis and better prepared for changes and challenges in a post-crisis world. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that provides empirical evidence that LM practices are a moderating variable that improves companies' responsiveness in crisis times. IEE

Trophic position of dolphins tracks recent changes in the pelagic ecosystem of the Macaronesian region (NE Atlantic)
Dolphins play a key role in marine food webs as predators of mid-trophic level consumers. Because of their mobility and relatively long life span, they can be used as indicators of large scale changes in the ecosystem. In this study, we calculated the trophic position (TP) of five dolphin species from the Canary, Madeira and Azores Islands using bulk and compound-specific stable isotope ratios from muscle tissue to assess trophic adaptations to recent changes in the availability of feeding resources. Dolphin TP values were then compared with those of seven other species of cetaceans from this region. Analysis of stable nitrogen isotopes in amino acids of the common dolphin indicated non-significant effects of changes in the basal resources of the food web and thus supported the use of bulk samples for TP estimations. Dolphins occupied an intermediate TP (mean 3.91 to 4.20) between fin (3.25) and sperm whales (4.95). Species-specific TP were equivalent among islands. However, TP increased for the common dolphin and decreased for the striped dolphin (the latter also becoming more oceanic) between 2000 and 2018 in the Canary Islands.
