The essential oil of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) has high economic value and is produced in the plant by secondary metabolism. Its quantity and composition tend to vary as a response of the plant to stress situations due to changes in the environment and phenological phase. This work aimed to evaluate the development, the chemical composition, content, and the yield of essential oil of basil rich in Linalool, as a function of the soil water tensions and the harvest stages, in a loam texture soil. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse and consisted of three harvest times (BF - beginning of flowering,  FF - full flowering,  and EF - end of flowering) and five values of soil water tension to define when to irrigate (20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 kPa), totalizing 15 treatments. The irrigation in the soil water tension of 60 kPa generated a reduction in the content and the yield of essential oils compared with 20 kPa, only in the FF harvest stage. However, it did not modify the composition of the essential oil. Regardless of the soil water tension to define irrigation, the highest levels and yields of essential oil were found in the EF harvest stage. Harvest stages did not change the composition of the essential oil or the content of Linalool. In turn, the contents of the components Cineol, Camphor, ∝-Terpeneol, and Isobornyl acetate increased with the harvesting period from BF to EF. Eugenol had the opposite trend, reducing the content from BF to EF. Linalool, a component in greater proportion in essential oil, showed a higher content in soil water tensions up to 50 kPa, decreasing only by 60 kPa. In loam textured soils, it is recommended that basil producers, who aim to extract Linalool, irrigate when the soil water tension reaches up to 50 kPa, with the harvest at any stage of flowering

Turnera subulata Anti-Inflammatory Properties in Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated RAW 264.7 Macrophages

In South America, particularly in the Northeastern regions of Brazil, Turnera subulata leaf extract is used as an alternative traditional medicine approach for several types of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain, and general inflammation. Despite its widespread use, little is known about the medicinal properties of the plants of this genus. In this study, we evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory of T. subulata leaf extract in an in vitro model of inflammation, using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW-264.7 macrophage cell line. We observed that cotreatment with T. subulata leaf extract was able to reduce the oxidative stress in cells due to inflammatory response. More importantly, we observed that the leaf extract was able to directly modulate inflammatory response by altering activity of members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways. Our results demonstrate for the first time that T. subulata have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which warrant further investigation of the medicinal potential of this species.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/140112/1/jmf.2016.0047.pd

    Get PDF
In tropical America, principally in Northeastern Brazil, the leaf extract of Anacardium occidentale is traditionally used for treatment of different diseases. However, chemical and biological properties and activities of Anacardium occidentale are poorly investigated and known. Here, we evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities “in vitro” of leaf extract from Anacardium occidentale. Our results show that leaf extract exhibits antioxidant activity when used to treat RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Antioxidant effects were observed by decrease in oxidative damage in macrophage cells treated with 0.5 µg/mL and 5 µg/mL of leaf extract. Moreover, leaf extract reversed oxidative damage and inflammatory parameters induced in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Leaf extract at 0.5 µg/mL and 5 µg/mL was able to inhibit release of TNF-α and IL-1β in LPS-stimulated cells. Taken together, our results indicate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of leaf extract from Anacardium occidentale and reveal the positive effects that intake of these products can mediate in biological system

Introduction and objectives: Glecaprevir/pibrentasvir is a highly effective and well tolerated treatment for hepatitis C infection. Brazilian patients were not included in the original development studies for glecaprevir/pibrentasvir. This study aimed to assess safety and efficacy of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir in treatment-naïve Brazilian adults without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis. Patients and methods: EXPEDITION-3 was a Phase 3, open-label, multicenter study in treatment-naïve Brazilian adults with hepatitis C infection genotype 1–6. Patients without cirrhosis (F2 or F3) or with compensated cirrhosis (F4) received 8 or 12 weeks of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir, respectively. The primary efficacy endpoint was the rate of sustained virologic response at post-treatment Week 12. Secondary endpoints were on-treatment virologic failure and relapse rates. Baseline polymorphisms were assessed in NS3 and NS5A. Adverse events and laboratory abnormalities were monitored. Results: 100 patients were enrolled, 75 received 8 weeks of treatment and 25 received 12 weeks; all patients completed treatment. Overall sustained virologic response at post-treatment Week 12 rate was high (98.0%; 98/100; 95% confidence interval: 93.0–99.4) and remained high regardless of baseline viral or host factors, including demographics, hepatitis C virus RNA levels, polymorphisms in NS3 and/or NS5A, genotype, and relevant comorbidities. 55% of patients reported ≥1 adverse event, the most common beingheadache (18.0%). Four patients reported serious adverse events; none were considered drug related orled to study drug discontinuation. No hepatic decompensations were observed. Conclusions: Glecaprevir/pibrentasvir was effective and well tolerated in treatment-naïve Brazilianpatients with hepatitis C infection without cirrhosis and with compensated cirrhosis

The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural and productive features of Panicum maximum cultivars (Tanzânia, Mombaça, Massai, and Zuri) in three rest periods (30, 45 and 60 days), in the semiarid region of Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with three replicates. The length of the leaf blade and the diameter of the stem increased as a function of the cut intervals. Leaf blade width and number of live leaves (3.86 leaves tiller-1) were not affected by cut intervals. The height of the canopy increased with the ages, with effect in the mass of forage, being the cv. Zuri the most productive with 148,75 cm e 18.297,49 kg ha-1 DM at 60 days. The highest masses of leaves and stems were obtained in the longest rest period, while the leaf/stem ratio decreased. In the cut-off interval of 45 days, the cultivars of Panicum maximum have shown satisfactory yield, and the smaller cut interval provides a reduction in canopy height and stem thickness
