Entre Marcel Mauss et Paul Veyne : Pour une sociologie historique comparée du don

Cet article traite de l’héritage de Mauss à la sociologie historique et comparée du don par le biais d’une comparison entre son célèbre « Essai sur le don », avec l’approche de Paul Veyne dans son étude du don évergétique dans l’espace du monde gréco-romain, Le pain et le cirque. Alors que Mauss met l’accent sur les caractéristiques fondamentalement semblables et universelles du don au travers des périodes historiques et des cultures, Veyne au contraire insiste sur les différences, distinctions et discontinuitées. De fait, la relation de Veyne à Mauss s’avère ambigüe, et même restant dans sa lignée sous certains aspects. Un début de position d’inspiration wéberienne est suggéré, qui sans nier les similitudes et continuités possibles, s’offrirait aussi d’approcher la diversité du don comme une variable empirique et de la resituer dans une analyse pluridimensionnelle de ses contextes socioculturels et historiques.This paper deals with Mauss’s legacy to the historical and comparative sociology of the gift by means of a comparison between his famous Essai sur le don (Essay on the Gift) with Paul Veyne’s approach in his study of the evergetic gift in the Greco-Roman period, Le Pain et le cirque (Bread and Circuses). Whereas Mauss stresses basically similar and universal characteristics of the gift through historical periods and cultures, Veyne, on the other hand, insists on differences, distinctions and discontinuities. Indeed, the relationship between Veyne and Mauss is somewhat ambiguous and even parallel in certain ways. The beginnings of a Weberian-inspired position is suggested which, while not denying possible similarities and continuities, also tends to approach the diversity of the gift as an empirical variable and to replace it within a pluridimensional analysis of its socio-cultural and historical contexts.Este artículo trata de la herencia de Mauss a la sociología histórica y comparada del don por medio de una comparación entre su célebre Ensayo del don, con el enfoque de Paul Veyne en su estudio del don evergético en el espacio del mundo greco-romano, El pan y el circo.Mientras que Mauss hace hincapié en las características básicamente similares y universales del don a través de los períodos históricos y de las culturas, Veyne al contrario hace hincapié en las diferencias, distinciones y discontinuidades. De hecho, la relación de Veyne a Mauss se revela ambigua, así queden algunos aspectos en la misma orientación. OMG GMO! Parent-Child Conversations About Genetically Modified Foods

Studies indicate that Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, are safe to consume, but many adults remain skeptical. What kind of input are children receiving about GMOs? And how does that input shape their understanding of what GMOs are? We investigated this question in the context of parent-child conversations about food product decisions. Seventy parent-child dyads were shown a series of food product pairings and asked to discuss their preferences. The products differed by whether they were made from GMOs, as well as whether they contained gluten and whether they were grown organically. Non-GM foods were preferred over gluten-free foods, and conversations about GM foods contained more moral language than conversations about gluten. Preferences for organic foods equaled preferences for non-GM foods, and conversations about organic foods were as morally charged, but parents were less knowledgeable about the meaning of GMO than they were about the meaning of organic. Children’s knowledge of these terms varied with their parents’ knowledge, and their participation in the food-product conversations varied with their parents’ use of moral language. Taken together, these findings suggest that children’s conceptions of GMOs are shaped by their parents’ conceptions, despite the fact that parents’ preferences and attitudes toward GMOs outstrip their knowledge of what GMOs actually are

Les débats passionnels à propos de l'œuvre de Pierre Bourdieu et de ses engagements publics ont longtemps limité l'expression d'une critique scrupuleuse de son travail. Witchcraft and the Gift: Killing and Healing in Northwest Zambia

This chapter on witchcraft in northwest Zambia shows that forms of asking and giving may be deployed to suspend suspicion about the motives of others, even as they possess the potential to kill. When a woman asks a witch for a gift of salt to flavor her food, the witch feigns generosity but forces that woman to join the coven in recompense. In becoming a witch, that woman kills one of her relatives, whose flesh is consumed by the cowitch. The cowitch, in turn, becomes indebted to her and must provide more human flesh. This cycle of death may be broken when a healer offers a gift of sacrificial blood to the accused witch in exchange for the victim’s life. Drawing on David Graeber’s concept of human economies as well as Peter Geschiere’s treatment of intimacy and trust in witchcraft discourse, this chapter shows that requests and gifts may constitute leaps of faith that are dangerous but also necessary to undertake
