Observational diagnostics of gas in protoplanetary disks
Protoplanetary disks are composed primarily of gas (99% of the mass).
Nevertheless, relatively few observational constraints exist for the gas in
disks. In this review, I discuss several observational diagnostics in the UV,
optical, near-IR, mid-IR, and (sub)-mm wavelengths that have been employed to
study the gas in the disks of young stellar objects. I concentrate in
diagnostics that probe the inner 20 AU of the disk, the region where planets
are expected to form. I discuss the potential and limitations of each gas

Method-dependent epidemiological cutoff values (ECVs) for detection of triazole resistance in Candida and Aspergillus species for the SYO colorimetric broth and Etest agar diffusion methods
Although the Sensitrite Yeast-One (SYO) and Etest methods are widely utilized, interpretive criteria are not available for triazole susceptibility testing of Candida or Aspergillus species. We collected fluconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole and voriconazole SYO and Etest MICs from 39 laboratories representing all continents for (method-agent-dependent): 11,171 Candida albicans, 215 C. dubliniensis, 4,418 C. glabrata species complex (SC), 157 C. (Meyerozyma) guilliermondii, 676 C. krusei (Pichia kudriavzevii), 298 C (Clavispora) lusitaniae, 911 and 3,691 C. parapsilosissensu stricto (SS) and C. parapsilosisSC, respectively, 36 C. metapsilosis, 110 C. orthopsilosis, 1,854 C. tropicalis, 244 Saccharomyces cerevisiae, 1,409 Aspergillus fumigatus, 389 A. flavus, 130 A. nidulans, 233 A. niger, and 302 A. terreus complexes. SYO/Etest MICs for 282 confirmed non-WT isolates were included: ERG11 (C. albicans), ERG11 and MRR1 (C. parapsilosis), cyp51A (A. fumigatus), and CDR2, CDR1 overexpression (C. albicans and C. glabrata, respectively). Interlaboratory modal agreement was superior by SYO for yeast spp., and by the Etest for Aspergillus spp. Distributions fulfilling CLSI criteria for ECV definition were pooled and we proposed SYO ECVs for S. cerevisiae, 9 yeast and 3 Aspergillus species, and Etest ECVs for 5 yeast and 4 Aspergillus species. The posaconazole SYO ECV of 0.06 \ub5g/ml for C. albicans and the Etest itraconazole ECV of 2 \ub5g/ml for A. fumigatus were the best predictors of non-WT isolates. These findings support the need for method-dependent ECVs, as overall, the SYO appears to perform better for susceptibility testing of yeast spp. and the Etest for Aspergillus spp. Further evaluations should be conducted with more Candida mutants
Spread of a SARS-CoV-2 variant through Europe in the summer of 2020.
Following its emergence in late 2019, the spread of SARS-CoV-21,2 has been tracked by phylogenetic analysis of viral genome sequences in unprecedented detail3–5. Although the virus spread globally in early 2020 before borders closed, intercontinental travel has since been greatly reduced. However, travel within Europe resumed in the summer of 2020. Here we report on a SARS-CoV-2 variant, 20E (EU1), that was identified in Spain in early summer 2020 and subsequently spread across Europe. We find no evidence that this variant has increased transmissibility, but instead demonstrate how rising incidence in Spain, resumption of travel, and lack of effective screening and containment may explain the variant’s success. Despite travel restrictions, we estimate that 20E (EU1) was introduced hundreds of times to European countries by summertime travellers, which is likely to have undermined local efforts to minimize infection with SARS-CoV-2. Our results illustrate how a variant can rapidly become dominant even in the absence of a substantial transmission advantage in favourable epidemiological settings. Genomic surveillance is critical for understanding how travel can affect transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and thus for informing future containment strategies as travel resumes. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited
Social Measures and Flexible Navigation on Online Contact Networks
This paper discusses ways of navigating online contact networks - networks of social connections defined under a relational context - on a way that can provide much more meaningful information to those that use them. In particular we use the concept of a weak and strong relational tie to address the different levels of social distance and express them using a trapezoid function of fuzzy numbers. We provide a numerical example using a fuzzy graph where the strength or weakness of the connections is defined as a fuzzy number and address some of the advantages of this approach to provide better information for the members of this contact network
Exploring hotel service quality experience indicators in user-generated content: A case using trip advisor data
The new social and technological framework of Web 2.0 has resulted in the availability of significant volumes of user generated content. In some cases, user generated content describes existing services, as in the case of travel reviews, in which the users express their experiences and opinions about hotels among other aspects of travel experience. Existing approaches to measuring hotel quality from the customer perspective usually follow the expectation-experience gap model of SERVQUAL or some form of incident analysis. However, user generated content can be used as a complement to automatically gather user opinions in which the aspects covered are those spontaneously raised by customers. This paper reports an initial exploration of such approach on a small sample or reviews in Spanish gathered from TripAdvisor, using existing classifications of emotion types and eliciting conditions. Shallow natural language processing (NLP) techniques are applied to automatically extract simple expressions that can be used to obtain a profile of hotel quality. The results of the preliminary study were able to identify emotion types and eliciting conditions with a reasonable effectiveness which points out to the potential of the techniques to become a complementary tool for hotel evaluation
Using Imperfect Information in Online Social Systems: Applications and Measures of Betweenness
Online social software systems enable individuals to build representations of their network of social ties, and such information can be used for the analysis of network structure and the position of individuals in the network. However, social ties representing relationships as “friendship” have intensity or strength as an intrinsic, essential feature, and this needs to be taken into account in network models. This paper reports on fuzzy techniques that deal with imprecise information on the strength of social ties, and provides an extended model of brokerage that accounts for such imprecise information
