Spin transition in GdN@C, detected by low-temperature on-chip SQUID technique
We present a magnetic study of the GdN@C molecule, consisting of a
Gd-trimer via a Nitrogen atom, encapsulated in a C cage. This molecular
system can be an efficient contrast agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
applications. We used a low-temperature technique able to detect small magnetic
signals by placing the sample in the vicinity of an on-chip SQUID. The
technique implemented at NHMFL has the particularity to operate in high
magnetic fields of up to 7 T. The GdN@C shows a paramagnetic
behavior and we find a spin transition of the GdN structure at 1.2 K. We
perform quantum mechanical simulations, which indicate that one of the Gd ions
changes from a state () to a state (), likely due to a charge transfer between the C cage and the ion
The constant magnetic field of xi 1 CMa: geometry or slow rotation?
We report recent observations of the sharp-lined magnetic beta Cep pulsator
xi 1 CMa (= HD 46328). The longitudinal magnetic field of this star is detected
consistently, but it is not observed to vary strongly, during nearly 5 years of
observation. In this poster we evaluate whether the nearly constant
longitudinal field is due to intrinsically slow rotation, or rather if the
stellar or magnetic geometry is responsible
Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts Achievement of High School Students in Complete Programs of Agriscience Education
The purpose of this descriptive and comparative study was to describe the academic achievement of FFA (Future Farmers of America) members in a complete program of agriscience at Jackson County Comprehensive High School (JCCHS). A secondary purpose was to compare science, math, social studies, and language arts achievement of senior agriscience students/FFA members to the achievement of all seniors at JCCHS. The findings indicate that senior agriscience students/FFA members had a higher percentage of students achieving at the highest level (Pass Plus) of Language Arts on the GHSGT (Georgia High School Graduation Test) than the remaining student population at JCCHS. Senior agriscience students/FFA members also had a higher passing rate in comparison to all seniors at JCCHS on the social studies portion of the standardized test. The researchers postulate that further research needs to be conducted to identify the correlations between agriscience participation and performance on language arts and social studies standardized tests – areas where little or no research has been conducted. The researchers also recommend that other public school systems perform similar studies to determine the impact of secondary agriscience programs on student performance

Brand Name Translation: Language Constraints, Product Attributes and Consumer Perceptions in East and Southeast Asia
The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between foreign brand name translation and product-related cues-such as physical quality, perceived origin, and brand name-on consumers\u27 perceived quality, price, and purchase intentions. In translations from alphabetic to character-based languages such as Mandarin, two generic methods of brand name translation are available: (1) direct translation for the meaning of the brand name and (2) phonetic translation for the pronunciation of the brand name. The results from a series of structurally related experiments designed to investigate the effects of brand name translation in a cross-cultural context indicate that for an unknown brand, a phonetic translation may be mandatory, whereas for an existing strong brand name, it may be best to retain the original name
Evaluation of the Current Perspectives on Letters of Recommendation for Residency Applicants among Plastic Surgery Program Directors
Background. The goals of this project were to evaluate the current perspective on letters of recommendation and to assess the need for, and acceptance of, a more standardized letter of recommendation (LOR). Methods. An eight-question survey was distributed to plastic surgery program directors. A five-point Likert scale was selected as a means of quantifying the participants' responses to the survey. Results. Twenty-eight of 71 program directors (39.4%) completed the survey. The majority of participants felt that current LOR did not offer a realistic way to compare applicants (mean ± SD, 2.9 ± 0.8). While most agreed that increasing the objectivity of LOR would be valuable in comparing applicants (mean ± SD, 4.1 ± 0.9), the overall average response to whether a more standardized letter format would improve the resident selection process remained only slightly better than neutral (mean ± SD, 3.5 ± 1.2). Most of the chairmen supported the notion that familiarity with the author of the LOR strengthened the recommendation (mean ± SD, 4.5 ± 0.6). Conclusion. The majority of plastic surgery program directors would like more objectivity in comparing applicants but are ambivalent about a standardized letter of recommendation
Searching for Weak or Complex Magnetic Fields in Polarized Spectra of Rigel
Seventy-eight high-resolution Stokes V, Q and U spectra of the B8Iae
supergiant Rigel were obtained with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT and
its clone NARVAL at TBL in the context of the Magnetism in Massive Stars
(MiMeS) Large Program, in order to scrutinize this core-collapse supernova
progenitor for evidence of weak and/or complex magnetic fields. In this paper
we describe the reduction and analysis of the data, the constraints obtained on
any photospheric magnetic field, and the variability of photospheric and wind
