    Tracking system using RFID for hiking activity with IoT technology

    Hiking is popular in Malaysia because of the geographical factors that have a lots of mountains. Since this is an extreme activity, it gives a lot of risk for the hikers. There were 134 incidents in the mountains reported during 1996 until 2014 where 52 cases are about missing people. When encounter with missing people cases, it is difficult to pinpoint the last location of victim. Therefore, this project aimed to help the rescuer by providing them information of the victim’s last location by creating a tracking system using RFID in order to store data on each checkpoint along the hiking trails in memory card. This system also equipped with wifi which allowed the system send notification using Telegram Apps. The rescuers can extract the data from the memory card from each checkpoint to trace the last location of the victim before reported missing. By having this information, the rescuers will save a lot of time because they can estimate from which area they should start the search and rescue operation

    Ergogenic, anti-diabetic and antioxidant attributes of selected Malaysian herbs: characterisation of flavonoids and correlation of functional activities

    In the present work, aqueous ethanolic (60% ethanol) extracts from selected Malaysian herbs including Murraya koenigii L. Spreng, Lawsonia inermis L., Cosmos caudatus Kunth, Piper betle L., and P. sarmentosum Roxb. were evaluated for their ergogenic, anti-diabetic and antioxidant potentials. Results showed that the analysed herbs had ergogenic property and were able to activate 5'AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in a concentration dependant manner. The highest AMPK activation was exhibited by M. koenigii extract which showed no significant (p > 0.05) difference with green tea (positive control). For anti-diabetic potential, the highest α-glucosidase inhibition was exhibited by M. koenigii extract with IC50 of 43.35 ± 7.5 μg/mL, which was higher than acarbose (positive control). The determinations of free radical scavenging activity and total phenolics content (TPC) indicated that the analysed herbs had good antioxidant activity. However, C. caudatus extract showed superior antioxidant activity with IC50 against free radical and TPC of 21.12 ± 3.20 μg/mL and 221.61 ± 7.49 mg GAE/g, respectively. RP-HPLC analysis established the presence of flavonoids in the herbs wherein L. inermis contained the highest flavonoid (catechin, epicatechin, naringin and rutin) content (668.87 mg/kg of extract). Correlations between the analyses were conducted, and revealed incoherent trends. Overall, M. koenigii was noted to be the most potent herb for enhancement of AMPK activity and α-glucosidase inhibition but exhibited moderate antioxidant activity. These results revealed that the selected herbs could be potential sources of natural ergogenic and anti-diabetic/antioxidant agents due to their rich profile of phenolics. Further analysis in vivo should be carried out to further elucidate the mechanism of actions of these herbs as ergogenic aids and anti-diabetic/antioxidant agents

    Enhancing the decolorization of methylene blue using a low-cost super-absorbent aided by response surface methodology

    The presence of organic dyes from industrial wastewater can cause pollution and exacerbate environmental problems; therefore, in the present work, activated carbon was synthesized from locally available oil palm trunk (OPT) biomass as a low-cost adsorbent to remove synthetic dye from aqueous media. The physical properties of the synthesized oil palm trunk activated carbon (OPTAC) were analyzed by SEM, FTIR-ATR, and XRD. The concurrent effects of the process variables (adsorbent dosage (g), methylene blue (MB) concentration (mg/L), and contact time (h)) on the MB removal percentage from aqueous solution were studied using a three-factor three-level Box–Behnken design (BBD) of response surface methodology (RSM), followed by the optimization of MB adsorption using OPTAC as the adsorbent. Based on the results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the three parameters considered, adsorbent dosage (X1) is the most crucial parameter, with an F-value of 1857.43, followed by MB concentration (X2) and contact time (X3) with the F-values of 95.60 and 29.48, respectively. Furthermore, the highest MB removal efficiency of 97.9% was achieved at the optimum X1, X2, and X3 of 1.5 g, 200 mg/L, and 2 h, respectivel

    p53 mutation remains the most common genetic change identified in human neoplasia. In breast cancer, p53 mutation is associated with more aggressive disease and worse overall survival. The frequency of mutation in p53 is, however, lower in breast cancer than in other solid tumours. Changes, both genetic and epigenetic, have been identified in regulators of p53 activity and in some downstream transcriptional targets of p53 in breast cancers that express wild-type p53. Molecular pathological analysis of the structure and expression of constituents of the p53 pathway is likely to have value in diagnosis, in prognostic assessment and, ultimately, in treatment of breast cancer

    Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study

    Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung’s disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middleincome countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Mortality among all patients was 37 (39·8%) of 93 in low-income countries, 583 (20·4%) of 2860 in middle-income countries, and 50 (5·6%) of 896 in high-income countries (p<0·0001 between all country income groups). Gastroschisis had the greatest difference in mortality between country income strata (nine [90·0%] of ten in lowincome countries, 97 [31·9%] of 304 in middle-income countries, and two [1·4%] of 139 in high-income countries; p≤0·0001 between all country income groups). Factors significantly associated with higher mortality for all patients combined included country income status (low-income vs high-income countries, risk ratio 2·78 [95% CI 1·88–4·11], p<0·0001; middle-income vs high-income countries, 2·11 [1·59–2·79], p<0·0001), sepsis at presentation (1·20 [1·04–1·40], p=0·016), higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score at primary intervention (ASA 4–5 vs ASA 1–2, 1·82 [1·40–2·35], p<0·0001; ASA 3 vs ASA 1–2, 1·58, [1·30–1·92], p<0·0001]), surgical safety checklist not used (1·39 [1·02–1·90], p=0·035), and ventilation or parenteral nutrition unavailable when needed (ventilation 1·96, [1·41–2·71], p=0·0001; parenteral nutrition 1·35, [1·05–1·74], p=0·018). Administration of parenteral nutrition (0·61, [0·47–0·79], p=0·0002) and use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (0·65 [0·50–0·86], p=0·0024) or percutaneous central line (0·69 [0·48–1·00], p=0·049) were associated with lower mortality. Interpretation Unacceptable differences in mortality exist for gastrointestinal congenital anomalies between lowincome, middle-income, and high-income countries. Improving access to quality neonatal surgical care in LMICs will be vital to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 of ending preventable deaths in neonates and children younger than 5 years by 2030

    Virtual reality based mobile robot navigation in greenhouse environment

    The difficulties of transporting heavy mobile robots limit robotic experiments in agriculture. Virtual reality however, offers an alternative to conduct experiments in agriculture. This paper presents an application of virtual reality in a robot navigational experiment using SolidWorks and simulated into MATLAB. Trajectories were initiated using Probabilistic Roadmap and compared based on travel time, distance and tracking error, and the efficiency was calculated. The simulation results showed that the proposed method was able to conduct the navigational experiment inside the virtual environment. U-turn trajectory was chosen as the best trajectory for crop inspection with 82.7% efficiency

    Behaviour of precracked RC beams strengthened using the side-NSM technique

    The side near-surface mounted (SNSM) method is an alternative method used for applying fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) flexural strengthening on reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The SNSM method places the FRP grooves at the sides of the beam, rather than at the bottom in the normal near surface mounted (NSM) method. This research focuses on studying the performance of precracked RC beams when strengthened with the SNSM method. Six RC beams strengthened with the side-NSM (SNSM) method were tested in flexure. Precracked SNSM strengthened beams have reduced ultimate load by up to 3.3% and higher stiffness by up to 28.4% compared to non-precracked SNSM strengthened beams. The modes of failure for SNSM strengthened beams was identical for the precracked beams and the equivalent non-precracked beams. A simulation method based on the moment-rotation approach was also presented and was found to be reasonably accurate and able to simulate the change in stiffness caused by precracking

    Characterization and deacidification of acidic petroleum crude oil utilizing metal oxide catalyst supported on alumina and ammoniated polyethylene glycol solution

    The presence of naphthenic acid (NA) in petroleum crude oil may cause serious corrosion problem for refinery processing equipment. In this work, an alternative method to remove NA is investigated based on the catalytic deacidification reaction to achieve the target of lowering the total acid number (TAN) as required by PETRONAS to be less than 1. Ammoniated polyethylene glycol (NH3-PEG) was formulated as a deacidifying agent with various concentrations ranging from 100 – 1000 mg/L for crude oil. Cerium oxide based catalyst supported on alumina was synthesized via wet impregnation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and thermogravimetry analysis-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). Parameters such as amount of basic chemical dosing, type of metal oxides, catalyst calcination temperature and reusability of catalyst on the removal of NA was studied. The results showed the TAN value for crude oil was reduced by 70.6% to a TAN of 0.74 mg KOH/g by using 1000 mg/L of NH3-PEG dosing aids by Ce/Al2O3 catalyst calcined at 1000 °C
