    Giant perivascular spaces: two case reports

    Giant perivascular spaces or Virchow-Robin spaces (VRSs) are uniquely inherent developmental malformation and are generally lined by ependymal or leptomeningeal cells. The cerebral hemispheres with VRSs present multiple cysts of curvilinear, round, oval, or layered configuration, which have the same signal intensity as the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and represent extremely dilated VRSs. The cortex became extremely thin with a well-defined margin. Herein, we report two cases of true giant perivascular spaces and present a review of pertinent literature. A patient has multiple cysts in the unilateral and bilateral and has polycystic liver. The clinical presentation, image logical features, and diagnosis are discussed

    Crystal growth, structure and thermal properties of noncentrosymmetric single crystals PrCa4O(BO3)3+

    Noncentrosymmetric praseodymium calcium oxyborate single crystals, PrCa4O(BO3)3 (PrCOB), were grown by the Czochralski technique. The monoclinic unit cell parameters were found to be a = 8.177 Å, b = 16.157 Å, c = 3.629 Å and Z = 2 with space group Cm. Crystal density was measured using the Archimedes method, being on the order of 3.47 g cm-3. Thermal properties of PrCOB were investigated, where the specific heat was found to be 0.63 J g-1 °C-1 at room temperature, increasing to 0.85 J g-1°C-1 at 700°C. The thermal expansion coefficients were measured to be α11 = 7.99, α22 = 4.90 and α33 = 9.46 (10-6/°C), respectively. In addition, thermal diffusivity λ22 and thermal conductivity κ22 as a function of temperature were studied, where λ22 was observed to decrease from 0.89 to 0.58 mm2 s-1, while κ22 was found to maintain the same value, being ∼1.90 W m-1°C-1 over the temperature range of 20-700°C. 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    The mechanism of resistance-reducing/anti-adhesion and its application on biomimetic disc furrow opener

    The black soil of Northeast China is sticky and agglomerates easily, which often adheres to the surface of a traditional furrow opener during the furrowing process. In this paper, biomimetic design principles in resistance-reducing, anti-adhesion and resistance-reducing mechanism of biomimetic disc furrow opener were studied. Nine kinds of singular convex hull, nine kinds of singular wedge and nine kinds of mixed convex hull and wedge structural biomimetic disc furrow opener were designed, and the furrowing process with the soil simulated by finite element method (FEM). Three types of biomimetic disc furrow opener with less resistance were manufactured by laser processing for comparative test in soil bin based on the simulation results. The test results showed that the resistance of the biomimetic disc furrow opener was less than that of the ordinary disc. The soil-disc stress, influence of biomimetic structures, moisture content and furrow speeds on resistance were discussed. The resistance-reducing rate of D-BC-3 reached the maximum value 15.36% at the furrow speed of 0.6 m/s and the soil moisture content of 20%.     Deep Brain Stimulation Complications in Patients With Parkinson’s Disease and Surgical Modifications: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis

    BackgroundAs a complication-prone operation, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become the first-line surgical approach for patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of DBS-associated complications.MethodsWe have reviewed a consecutive series of patients with PD undergoing DBS procedures to describe the type, severity, management, and outcome of postoperative complications from January 2011 to December 2018. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify statistically significant risk factors. We also described our surgical strategies to minimize the adverse events.ResultsA total of 225 patients underwent 229 DBS implantation procedures (440 electrodes), of whom 20 patients experienced 23 DBS-associated complications, including ten operation-related complications and 13 hardware-related ones. Univariate analysis elucidated that comorbid medical conditions (P = 0.024), hypertension (P = 0.003), early-stage operation (P < 0.001), and unilateral electrode implantation (P = 0.029) as risk factors for overall complications, or more specifically, operation-related complications demonstrated in the stratified analysis. In contrast, no risk factor for hardware-related complications was identified. Statistical significances of hypertension (OR = 3.33, 95% CI: 1.14–9.71, P = 0.027) and early-stage (OR = 11.04, 95% CI: 2.42–50.45, P = 0.002) were further validated via multivariate analysis. As the annual number of DBS procedures increased, the incidence of complications gradually decreased (R = −0.699, P < 0.01). Additionally, there was a strong correlation between surgical complications and unplanned readmission (R = 0.730, P < 0.01).ConclusionThe importance of cumulative experience and relevant technique modifications should be addressed to prevent DBS-associated complications and unplanned readmission

    Silver-modified polyniobotungstate for the visible light-induced simultaneous cleavage of C–C and C–N bonds

    Silver-modified polyniobotungstate based on Nb/W mixed-addendum polyoxometalate with formula Ag9[P2W15Nb3O62]·21H2O (Ag-Nb/W) was synthesized and then characterized by various analytical and spectral techniques. Ag-Nb/W was proven to be an efficient photocatalyst for the oxidative ring opening of 2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine via the simultaneous cleavage of C–C and C–N bonds. Under visible light (430–440 nm) and with oxygen as an oxidant at room temperature, Ag-Nb/W can catalyze the rapid transformation of various 2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives to produce the corresponding oxidative ring-opening product N-(pyridin-2-yl) amides in good isolated yields ranging from 65% to 78%. As a heterogeneous photocatalyst, Ag-Nb/W showed excellent sustainability and recyclability in the recycling experiments. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Ag-Nb/W could retain its integrity after catalysis. A possible mechanism involving the singlet oxygen for the catalytic reaction was proposed

    Vapor-phase synthesis, growth mechanism and thickness-independent elastic modulus of single-crystal tungsten nanobelts

    Single-crystal tungsten nanobelts with thicknesses from tens to hundreds of nanometers, widths of several micrometers and lengths of tens of micrometers were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition. Surface energy minimization was believed to have played a crucial role in the growth of the synthesized nanobelts enclosed by the low-energy {110} crystal planes of body-centered-cubic structure. The anisotropic growth of the crystallographically equivalent {110} crystal planes could be attributable to the asymmetric concentration distribution of the tungsten atom vapor around the nanobelts during the growth process. The elastic moduli of the synthesized tungsten nanobelts with thicknesses ranging from 65 to 306 nm were accurately measured using a newly developed thermal vibration method. The measured modulus values of the tungsten nanobelts were thickness-dependent. After eliminating the effect of surface oxidization using a core-shell model, the elastic modulus of tungsten nanobelts became constant, which is close to that of the bulk tungsten value of 410 GPa

    Overexpression of an Incw2 gene in endosperm improved yield-related traits in maize

    High yield is an eternal goal for crop breeding. Incw2 protein is the enzyme in the metabolic pathway that mobilizes photoassimilated sucrose into numerous reactions of the developing plant seeds, associated with grain yield. In the research, an Incw2 gene driven by 27 kD zein promoter was specifically over-expressed in the endosperm cells of maize inbred line 18-599R by Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation. PCR assay displayed that ten of the regenerated plants were integrated with the target gene. By semi-quantitative RT-PCR and invertase activity analysis, five of them showed significantly higher expression of Incw2 transcripts and enzyme activity compared to the wild type. Among them, line 1 stood out because it possessed the highest level of Incw2 mRNA and enzyme activity. The effects of Incw2 over-expression were reflected in the increased chlorophyll content, improved pho¬tosynthesis and delay of leaf senility. In addition, yield-related traits such as ear length, ear diameter, ear weight, grain weight per ear, and hundred-kernel weight appeared to be improved in three of the transformants compared with the wild type. The grain weight per plant of line1 was increased by nearly 10%. The results collectively indicate that it is potentially practical to enhance kernel yield of maize by overexpression of Incw2 in endosperm
