Strong nonlocality: A trade-off between states and measurements
Measurements on entangled quantum states can produce outcomes that are
nonlocally correlated. But according to Tsirelson's theorem, there is a
quantitative limit on quantum nonlocality. It is interesting to explore what
would happen if Tsirelson's bound were violated. To this end, we consider a
model that allows arbitrary nonlocal correlations, colloquially referred to as
"box world". We show that while box world allows more highly entangled states
than quantum theory, measurements in box world are rather limited. As a
consequence there is no entanglement swapping, teleportation or dense coding.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, very minor change
Entropy in general physical theories
Information plays an important role in our understanding of the physical
world. We hence propose an entropic measure of information for any physical
theory that admits systems, states and measurements. In the quantum and
classical world, our measure reduces to the von Neumann and Shannon entropy
respectively. It can even be used in a quantum or classical setting where we
are only allowed to perform a limited set of operations. In a world that admits
superstrong correlations in the form of non-local boxes, our measure can be
used to analyze protocols such as superstrong random access encodings and the
violation of `information causality'. However, we also show that in such a
world no entropic measure can exhibit all properties we commonly accept in a
quantum setting. For example, there exists no`reasonable' measure of
conditional entropy that is subadditive. Finally, we prove a coding theorem for
some theories that is analogous to the quantum and classical setting, providing

How uncertainty enables non-classical dynamics
The uncertainty principle limits quantum states such that when one observable
takes predictable values there must be some other mutually unbiased observables
which take uniformly random values. We show that this restrictive condition
plays a positive role as the enabler of non-classical dynamics in an
interferometer. First we note that instantaneous action at a distance between
different paths of an interferometer should not be possible. We show that for
general probabilistic theories this heavily curtails the non-classical
dynamics. We prove that there is a trade-off with the uncertainty principle,
that allows theories to evade this restriction. On one extreme, non-classical
theories with maximal certainty have their non-classical dynamics absolutely
restricted to only the identity operation. On the other extreme, quantum theory

A violation of the uncertainty principle implies a violation of the second law of thermodynamics
Uncertainty relations state that there exist certain incompatible
measurements, to which the outcomes cannot be simultaneously predicted. While
the exact incompatibility of quantum measurements dictated by such uncertainty
relations can be inferred from the mathematical formalism of quantum theory,
the question remains whether there is any more fundamental reason for the
uncertainty relations to have this exact form. What, if any, would be the
operational consequences if we were able to go beyond any of these uncertainty
relations? We give a strong argument that justifies uncertainty relations in
quantum theory by showing that violating them implies that it is also possible
to violate the second law of thermodynamics. More precisely, we show that
violating the uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics leads to a
thermodynamic cycle with positive net work gain, which is very unlikely to

Selenoprotein P Influences Colitis-Induced Tumorigenesis by Mediating Stemness and Oxidative Damage.
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk for colon cancer due to augmented oxidative stress. These patients also have compromised antioxidant defenses as the result of nutritional deficiencies. The micronutrient selenium is essential for selenoprotein production and is transported from the liver to target tissues via selenoprotein P (SEPP1). Target tissues also produce SEPP1, which is thought to possess an endogenous antioxidant function. Here, we have shown that mice with Sepp1 haploinsufficiency or mutations that disrupt either the selenium transport or the enzymatic domain of SEPP1 exhibit increased colitis-associated carcinogenesis as the result of increased genomic instability and promotion of a protumorigenic microenvironment. Reduced SEPP1 function markedly increased M2-polarized macrophages, indicating a role for SEPP1 in macrophage polarization and immune function. Furthermore, compared with partial loss, complete loss of SEPP1 substantially reduced tumor burden, in part due to increased apoptosis. Using intestinal organoid cultures, we found that, compared with those from WT animals, Sepp1-null cultures display increased stem cell characteristics that are coupled with increased ROS production, DNA damage, proliferation, decreased cell survival, and modulation of WNT signaling in response to H2O2-mediated oxidative stress. Together, these data demonstrate that SEPP1 influences inflammatory tumorigenesis by affecting genomic stability, the inflammatory microenvironment, and epithelial stem cell functions
On defining the Hamiltonian beyond quantum theory
Energy is a crucial concept within classical and quantum physics. An
essential tool to quantify energy is the Hamiltonian. Here, we consider how to
define a Hamiltonian in general probabilistic theories, a framework in which
quantum theory is a special case. We list desiderata which the definition
should meet. For 3-dimensional systems, we provide a fully-defined recipe which
satisfies these desiderata. We discuss the higher dimensional case where some
freedom of choice is left remaining. We apply the definition to example toy
theories, and discuss how the quantum notion of time evolution as a phase

Information Causality as a Physical Principle
Quantum physics exhibits remarkable distinguishing characteristics. For
example, it gives only probabilistic predictions (non-determinism) and does not
allow copying of unknown state (no-cloning). Quantum correlations may be
stronger than any classical ones, nevertheless information cannot be
transmitted faster than light (no-signaling). However, all these features do
not single out quantum physics. A broad class of theories exist which share
such traits with quantum mechanics, while they allow even stronger than quantum
correlations. Here, we introduce the principle of Information Causality. It
states that information that Bob can gain about a previously completely unknown
to him data set of Alice, by using all his local resources (which may be
correlated with her resources) and a classical communication from her, is
bounded by the information volume of the communication. In other words, if
Alice communicates m bits to Bob, the total information access that Bob gains
to her data is not greater than m. For m=0, Information Causality reduces to
the standard no-signaling principle. We show that this new principle is
respected both in classical and quantum physics, whereas it is violated by all
the no-signaling correlations which are stronger that the strongest quantum
correlations. Maximally strong no-signalling correlations would allow Bob
access to any m bit subset of the whole data set held by Alice. If only one bit
is sent by Alice (m=1), this is tantamount to Bob being able to access the
value of any single bit of Alice's data (but of course not all of them). We
suggest that Information Causality, a generalization of no-signaling, might be

Regional Genetic Structure in the Aquatic Macrophyte Ruppia cirrhosa Suggests Dispersal by Waterbirds
The evolutionary history of the genus Ruppia has been shaped by hybridization, polyploidisation and vicariance that have resulted in a problematic taxonomy. Recent studies provided insight into species circumscription, organelle takeover by hybridization, and revealed the importance of verifying species identification to avoid distorting effects of mixing different species, when estimating population connectivity. In the present study, we use microsatellite markers to determine population diversity and connectivity patterns in Ruppia cirrhosa including two spatial scales: (1) from the Atlantic Iberian coastline in Portugal to the Siculo-Tunisian Strait in Sicily and (2) within the Iberian Peninsula comprising the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition. The higher diversity in the Mediterranean Sea suggests that populations have had longer persistence there, suggesting a possible origin and/or refugial area for the species. The high genotypic diversities highlight the importance of sexual reproduction for survival and maintenance of populations. Results revealed a regional population structure matching a continent-island model, with strong genetic isolation and low gene flow between populations. This population structure could be maintained by waterbirds, acting as occasional dispersal vectors. Adjunctive raloxifene treatment improves attention and memory in men and women with schizophrenia
There is increasing clinical and molecular evidence for the role of hormones and specifically estrogen and its receptor in schizophrenia. A selective estrogen receptor modulator, raloxifene, stimulates estrogen-like activity in brain and can improve cognition in older adults. The present study tested the extent to which adjunctive raloxifene treatment improved cognition and reduced symptoms in young to middle-age men and women with schizophrenia. Ninety-eight patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were recruited into a dual-site, thirteen-week, randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled, crossover trial of adjunctive raloxifene treatment in addition to their usual antipsychotic medications. Symptom severity and cognition in the domains of working memory, attention/processing speed, language and verbal memory were assessed at baseline, 6 and 13 weeks. Analyses of the initial 6-week phase of the study using a parallel groups design (with 39 patients receiving placebo and 40 receiving raloxifene) revealed that participants receiving adjunctive raloxifene treatment showed significant improvement relative to placebo in memory and attention/processing speed. There was no reduction in symptom severity with treatment compared with placebo. There were significant carryover effects, suggesting some cognitive benefits are sustained even after raloxifene withdrawal. Analysis of the 13-week crossover data revealed significant improvement with raloxifene only in attention/processing speed. This is the first study to show that daily, oral adjunctive raloxifene treatment at 120 mg per day has beneficial effects on attention/processing speed and memory for both men and women with schizophrenia. Review of small rural health services in Victoria: how does the nursing-medical division of labour affect access to emergency care?
Aims This paper is based on a review of the Australian and International literature relating to the nursing-medical division of labour. It also explores how the division of labour affects patient access to emergency care in small rural health services in Victoria, Australia. Background The paper describes the future Australian health workforce and the implications for rural Victoria. The concept of division of labour and how it relates to nursing and medicine is critically reviewed. Two forms of division of labour emerge – traditional and negotiated division of labour. Key themes are drawn from the literature that describes the impact of a traditional form of division of labour in a rural context. Methods This paper is based on a review of the Australian and international literature, including grey literature, on the subject of rural emergency services, professional boundaries and roles, division of labour, professional relationships and power and the Australian health workforce. Results In Australia, the contracting workforce means that traditional divisions of labour between health professionals cannot be sustained without reducing access to emergency care in rural Victoria. A traditional division of labour results in rural health services that are vulnerable to slight shifts in the medical workforce, unsafe services and recruitment and retention problems. A negotiated form of division of labour provides a practical alternative. Conclusion A division of labour that is negotiated between doctors and nurses and supported by a legal and clinical governance framework, is needed to support rural emergency services. The published evidence suggests that this situation currently does not exist in Victoria. Strategies are offered for creating and supporting a negotiated division of labour
