    Competing Ground States of a Peierls-Hubbard Nanotube

    Motivated by iodo platinum complexes assembled within a quadratic-prism lattice, [Pt(C2_2H8_8N2_2)(C10_{10}H8_8N2_2)I]4_4(NO3_3)8_8, we investigate the ground-state properties of a Peierls-Hubbard four-legged tube. Making a group-theoretical analysis, we systematically reveal a variety of valence arrangements, including half-metallic charge-density-wave states. Quantum and thermal phase competition is numerically demonstrated with particular emphasis on doping-induced successive insulator-to-metal transitions with conductivity increasing stepwise.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. to be published in Europhys.     Determination of trace amounts of bromide by flow injection/stopped-flow detection technique using kinetic-spectrophotometric method

    A simple, sensitive and selective method for the determination of bromide in seawater by using a flow injection/stopped-flow detection technique was examined. The detection system was developed for a new kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of bromide in the presence of chloride matrix without any extraction and/or separation. The detection was based on the kinetic effect of bromide on the oxidation of methylene blue (MB) with hydrogen peroxide in a strongly acidic solution. Large amounts of chloride could enhance the sensitivity of the method as an activator. The decolorisation of the blue color of MB was used for the spectrophotometric determination of bromide at 746 nm. A stopped-flow approach was used to improve the sensitivity of the measurement and provide good linearity of the calibration over the range of 0-3.2 p,g ml(-1) of bromide. The relative standard deviation was 0.74% for the determination of 2.4 jig ml(-1) bromide (n=5). The detection limit (3 sigma) was 0.1 mu g ml(-1) with a sampling frequency of 12 h(-1). The influence of potential interfering ions was studied. The proposed method was applied to the determination of bromide in seawater samples and provided satisfactory results. </p

    The author has identified the following significant results. A detailed land use classification for a large urban area of Tokyo was made using MSS digital data. It was found that residential, commercial, industrial, and wooded areas and grasslands can be successfully classified. A mesoscale vortex associated with large ocean current, Kuroshio, which is a rare phenomenon, was recognized visually through the analysis of MSS data. It was found that this vortex affects the effluent patterns of rivers. Lava flowing from Sakurajima Volcano was clearly classified for three major erruptions (1779, 1914, and 1946) using MSS data

    We study the low-temperature properties of S=1 and 1/2 alternating spin chains with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange couplings using analytical techniques as well as a quantum Monte Carlo method. The spin-wave approach predicts two different low-lying excitations, which are gapped and gapless, respectively. The structure of low-lying levels is also discussed by perturbation theory in the strength of the Ising anisotropy. These analytical findings are compared with the results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations and it turns out that spin-wave theory well describes the present system. We conclude that the quantum ferrimagnetic chain exhibits both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic aspects.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, six figures, submitted to J. Phys. Cond. Ma

    Spin-Wave Description of Nuclear Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Mn_{12}O_{12} Acetate

    In response to recent nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements on the molecular cluster Mn_{12}O_{12} acetate, we study the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 developing a modified spin-wave theory. Our microscopic new approach, which is distinct from previous macroscopic treatments of the cluster as a rigid spin of S=10, not only excellently interprets the observed temperature and applied-field dependences of 1/T_1 for ^{55}Mn nuclei but also strongly supports the ^{13}C NMR evidence for spin delocalization over the entire molecule.Comment: to be published in Phys.     Anti-self-dual Maxwell solutions on hyperk\"ahler manifold and N=2 supersymmetric Ashtekar gravity

    Anti-self-dual (ASD) Maxwell solutions on 4-dimensional hyperk\"ahler manifolds are constructed. The N=2 supersymmetric half-flat equations are derived in the context of the Ashtekar formulation of N=2 supergravity. These equations show that the ASD Maxwell solutions have a direct connection with the solutions of the reduced N=2 supersymmetric ASD Yang-Mills equations with a special choice of gauge group. Two examples of the Maxwell solutions are presented.Comment: 9 page

    We have developed a gating foil for the time projection chamber envisaged as a central tracker for the international linear collider experiment. It has a structure similar to the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) with a higher optical aperture ratio and functions as an ion gate without gas amplification. The transmission rate for electrons was measured in a counting mode for a wide range of the voltages applied across the foil using an 55^{55}Fe source and a laser in the absence of a magnetic field.     A pilot study on culture of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch)in open sea cage at Munambam, Cochin coast, India

    India ranks third in global fish production with 6.4 million metric t, but mariculture in the Indian seas is yet to be popularised. The limited availability of protected sites and the probable conflicts with other activities such as fishing, tourism and navigation are factors likely to influence mariculture development in India, besides finance, technology, expertise and government policy. A pilot scale inshore marine cage culture experiment has been undertaken since 2007 at Visakhapatnam coast of India in the Bay of Bengal. A similar cage was launched at Munambam for the culture of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer. Asian seabass seed (3.5 ±1.5 g) reared in hapa installed in ponds for a period of 30 days were stocked in the cage and cultured for a period of 120 days and harvested at an average weight of 315.5 g. Analysis of nutrient levels in seawater near the cage, revealed no noticeable accumulation of solid particulate wastes indicating that water current (0.5 to 1.0 m sec-1) was adequate in the site to prevent accumulation of wastes in the cage as well as in the premises.     Performance of the Charge Injection Capability of Suzaku XIS

    A charge injection technique is applied to the X-ray CCD camera, XIS (X-ray Imaging Spectrometer) onboard Suzaku. The charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) in each CCD column (vertical transfer channel) is measured by the injection of charge packets into a transfer channel and subsequent readout. This paper reports the performances of the charge injection capability based on the ground experiments using a radiation damaged device, and in-orbit measurements of the XIS. The ground experiments show that charges are stably injected with the dispersion of 91eV in FWHM in a specific column for the charges equivalent to the X-ray energy of 5.1keV. This dispersion width is significantly smaller than that of the X-ray events of 113eV (FWHM) at approximately the same energy. The amount of charge loss during transfer in a specific column, which is measured with the charge injection capability, is consistent with that measured with the calibration source. These results indicate that the charge injection technique can accurately measure column-dependent charge losses rather than the calibration sources. The column-to-column CTI correction to the calibration source spectra significantly reduces the line widths compared to those with a column-averaged CTI correction (from 193eV to 173eV in FWHM on an average at the time of one year after the launch). In addition, this method significantly reduces the low energy tail in the line profile of the calibration source spectrum.Comment: Paper contains 18 figures and 15 tables.
