Aspects of discontinuous precipitation reactions in Ag-7.5Cu
Since the crystallographic orientation of a cellular colony derives from the grain it grows away from, experimental interest in discontinuous precipitation (DP) has centred on how nucleation and growth rates are affected by the misorientation of the initiating grain boundary. There has been little attention paid to the nature of the interface at the reaction front. Ageing experiments on Ag-7.5Cu at 2500C showed there to be two DP colony populations with distinctly different growth behaviours. EBSD studies have shown that as the colonies grow there is a build-up of misorientation behind the reaction front and eventually the fast growing colonies are surrounded by interfaces close to particular low ÎŁ coincident site lattice (CSL) misorientations with respect to the grain into which they are growing. On the other hand, slow growing colonies are characterised by misorientations close to a different set of low ÎŁCSLs. The growth mechanisms behind this behaviour will be discussed
Can a computerised training paradigm assist people with intellectual disabilities to learn cognitive mediation skills? A randomised experiment
Aims: The aim was to examine whether specific skills required for cognitive behavioural
therapy (CBT) could be taught using a computerised training paradigm with people who have
intellectual disabilities (IDs). Training aimed to improve: a) ability to link pairs of situations
and mediating beliefs to emotions, and b) ability to link pairs of situations and emotions to
mediating beliefs.
Method: Using a single-blind mixed experimental design, sixty-five participants with IDs
were randomised to receive either computerised training or an attention-control condition.
Cognitive mediation skills were assessed before and after training.
Results: Participants who received training were significantly better at selecting appropriate
emotions within situation-beliefs pairs, controlling for baseline scores and IQ. Despite
significant improvements in the ability of those who received training to correctly select
intermediating beliefs for situation-feelings pairings, no between-group differences were
observed at post-test.
Conclusions: The findings indicated that computerised training led to a significant
improvement in some aspects of cognitive mediation for people with IDs, but whether this
has a positive effect upon outcome from therapy is yet to be established

Nationalised large-scale mining, trade unions and community representation: perspectives from Northern Madagascar
This article critically explores the nature and purpose of relationships and inter-dependencies between stakeholders in the context of a parastatal chromite mining company in the Betsiboka Region of Northern Madagascar. An examination of the institutional arrangements at the interface between the mining company and local communities identified power hierarchies and dependencies in the context of a dominant paternalistic environment. The interactions, inter alia, limited social cohesion and intensified the fragility and weakness of community representation, which was further influenced by ethnic hierarchies between the varied community groups; namely, indigenous communities and migrants to the area from different ethnic groups. Moreover, dependencies and nepotism, which may exist at all institutional levels, can create civil society stakeholder representatives who are unrepresentative of the society they are intended to represent. Similarly, a lack of horizontal and vertical trust and reciprocity inherent in Malagasy society engenders a culture of low expectations regarding transparency and accountability, which further catalyses a cycle of nepotism and elite rent-seeking behaviour. On the other hand, leaders retain power with minimal vertical delegation or decentralisation of authority among levels of government and limit opportunities to benefit the elite, perpetuating rent-seeking behaviour within the privileged minority. Within the union movement, pluralism and the associated politicisation of individual unions restricts solidarity, which impacts on the movementâs capacity to act as a cohesive body of opinion and opposition. Nevertheless, the unionsâ drive to improve their social capital has increased expectations of transparency and accountability, resulting in demands for greater engagement in decision-making processes
Physical Activity and Obesity in Canadian Women
Health Issue: Overweight and obesity have been recognized as major public health concern in Canada and throughout the world. Lack of physical activity, through its impact on energy balance, has been identified as an important modifiable risk factor for obesity. Physical activity and obesity are also important risk factors for a variety of chronic diseases. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of physical activity and overweight/obesity among Canadian women. Key Findings: For all ages combined more women (57%) than men (50%) are physically inactive (energy expenditure <1.5 KKD). Physical activity increases as income adequacy and educational level decrease. Physical inactivity also varies by ethnicity. The prevalence of both overweight (BMI 25.0 â 29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI â„ 30 kg/m2) Canadian women has increased 7 % since 1985. Obesity increases with age and is highest among women reporting low and lower middle incomes and lower levels of education. Estimating partial body ionizing radiation exposure by automated cytogenetic biodosimetry
Purpose: Inhomogeneous exposures to ionizing radiation can be detected and quantified with the dicentric chromosome assay (DCA) of metaphase cells. Complete automation of interpretation of the DCA for whole-body irradiation has significantly improved throughput without compromising accuracy, however, low levels of residual false positive dicentric chromosomes (DCs) have confounded its application for partial-body exposure determination.
Materials and methods: We describe a method of estimating and correcting for false positive DCs in digitally processed images of metaphase cells. Nearly all DCs detected in unirradiated calibration samples are introduced by digital image processing. DC frequencies of irradiated calibration samples and those exposed to unknown radiation levels are corrected subtracting this false positive fraction from each. In partial-body exposures, the fraction of cells exposed, and radiation dose can be quantified after applying this modification of the contaminated Poisson method.
Results: Dose estimates of three partially irradiated samples diverged 0.2-2.5 Gy from physical doses and irradiated cell fractions deviated by 2.3%-15.8% from the known levels. Synthetic partial-body samples comprised of unirradiated and 3 Gy samples from 4 laboratories were correctly discriminated as inhomogeneous by multiple criteria. Root mean squared errors of these dose estimates ranged from 0.52 to 1.14 Gy2 and from 8.1 to 33.3%2 for the fraction of cells irradiated.
Conclusions: Automated DCA can differentiate whole- from partial-body radiation exposures and provides timely quantification of estimated whole-body equivalent dose
