    Exchange Rate Movements and Tradable Goods Prices in East Asia: An Analysis Based on Japanese Customs Data, 1988–1999

    This paper uses a dynamic panel data model to estimate the pass-through coefficients of 20 nine-digit industrial commodities that are traded between Japan and its East Asian and industrial country trading partners. By using the monthly series of unit export and import values obtained from the Japanese customs data for the period 1988–99, it shows that price pass-through is much larger for Japanese exports than for Japanese imports, suggesting that the yen prices of Japanese imports do not fall (rise) very much when the yen appreciates (depreciates), whereas the prices of Japanese exports rise (fall) considerably in the buyerís currency. With the notable exception of some imports from Malaysia, the degree of price pass-through was not qualitatively affected by the Asian currency crisis of 1997.     Effect of the surface geology on strong ground motions due to the 2016 Central Tottori Earthquake, Japan

    On October 21, 2016, an earthquake with Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) magnitude 6.6 hit the central part of Tottori Prefecture, Japan. This paper demonstrates two notable effects of the surface geology on strong ground motions due to the earthquake. One is a predominant period issue observed over a large area. A seismic intensity of 6 lower on the JMA scale was registered at three sites in the disaster area. However, the peak ground acceleration ranged from 0.3 to 1.4 G at the three sites because of the varying peak periods of observed strong ground motions. The spectral properties of the observations also reflect the damage around the sites. Three-component microtremors were observed in the area; the predominant ground period distributions based on horizontal to vertical spectral ratios were provided by the authors. The peak periods of the strong motion records agree well with predominant periods estimated from microtremor observations at a rather hard site; however, the predominant periods of the microtremors are slightly shorter than those of the main shock at the other two soft sites. We checked the nonlinear effect at the sites by comparing the site responses to small events and the main shock. The peak periods of the main shock were longer than those of the weak motions at the sites. This phenomenon indicates a nonlinear site effect due to large ground motions caused by the main shock. A horizontal component of the accelerogram showed rather pulsating swings that indicate cyclic mobility behavior, especially at a site close to a pond shore; ground subsidence of ~20 cm was observed around the site. The peak periods of weak motions agree well with those of the microtremor observations. This implies an important issue that the predominant periods estimated by microtremors are not sufficient to estimate the effect of surface geology for disaster mitigation.     Superficial siderosis associated with aceruloplasminemia. Case report

    A 63-year-old woman with a past history of right subdural hematoma (SDH) at the age of 61 years was referred to our hospital under a suspicion of aceruloplasminemia (ACP). A neurological examination revealed very mild cognitive impairment and cerebellar ataxia. Blood chemistry data showed deficient ceruloplasmin (Cp), decreased copper, and increased ferritin. A nonsense mutation (c.2630G > A, p.Trp858Ter) was detected in the Cp gene. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed marked hypointensity at the surface of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem bilaterally, in addition to the bilateral basal ganglia, thalamus, and dentate nucleus, suggesting the coexistence of ACP and superficial siderosis (SS). The characteristics of SS in ACP have not been examined neuroradiologically or neuropathologically in great detail, while SDH and its curative surgery are known to cause SS. The distribution of the hypointensity areas on MRI was expanded bilaterally to the subtentorial areas of this patient, which was much more widespread than observed in typical SS after SDH. We speculate that the underlying ACP may expand the SS induced by SDH.     Factor Analysis of Damage to Small Earth Dams Due to the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake

    Damage to small earth dams due to the Hyogoken-Namby Earthquake of January 17, 1995 is discussed. Investigations of 266 dams were conducted in the area where the JMA seismic intensity was 5 or higher, and which were located within about 50 kilometers from the earthquake source fault. Small earth dams suffered various forms of damage such as longitudinal cracking, transverse cracking, settlement and deformation of the dam body. The damage to small earth dams was classified into five grades from no damage to severe damage such as a complete failure. The damage grade was analyzed by several factors such as distance from the fault, topography and geology, intensity of quake motion, direction of dam axis against the fault, year of completion, and height of dam.     A Case Report of Intraductal Papillary-Mucinous Neoplasm of the Pancreas Showing Morphologic Transformation during Followup Periods

    A 64-year-old man underwent MRCP for further examination of gallbladder stones and IPMN of branch-type (IPMN-Br) was pointed out. Yearly MRCP had revealed the gradual increase of the cystic components, marked dilation of the main pancreatic duct (MPD), and filling defects in the MPD. After follow-up for three years, he underwent pancreatoduodenectomy. Histologically, the dilated MPD and connecting dilated branch ducts were filled with nodular growth of tumor cells consisting of gastric-type adenoma with pyloric gland-like structures. In the MPD, a transition from gastric-type adenoma to intestinal-type carcinoma was observed. In addition, in a dilated branch duct, some components of intestinal-type carcinoma with marked arborizing structures were observed. A minimally invasion was observed around branch ducts. Immunohistochemistry revealed diffuse nuclear accumulation of PCNA and Ki67 in the tumor cells of branch dusts. Our observations suggest that the secondary infiltration to the MPD of IPMN-Br and IPMN-Br possesses malignant potential for microinvasion

    A cell factory of Bacillus subtilis engineered for the simple bioconversion of myo-inositol to scyllo-inositol, a potential therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A stereoisomer of inositol, <it>scyllo</it>-inositol, is known as a promising therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's disease, since it prevents the accumulation of beta-amyloid deposits, a hallmark of the disease. However, this compound is relatively rare in nature, whereas another stereoisomer of inositol, <it>myo</it>-inositol, is abundantly available.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>Bacillus subtilis </it>possesses a unique inositol metabolism involving both stereoisomers. We manipulated the inositol metabolism in <it>B. subtilis </it>to permit the possible bioconversion from <it>myo</it>-inositol to <it>scyllo</it>-inositol. Within 48 h of cultivation, the engineered strain was able to convert almost half of 10 g/L <it>myo</it>-inositol to <it>scyllo</it>-inositol that accumulated in the culture medium.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The engineered <it>B. subtilis </it>serves as a prototype of cell factory enabling a novel and inexpensive supply of <it>scyllo</it>-inositol.</p
