    Attitude Determination Using a MEMS-Based Flight Information Measurement Unit

    Obtaining precise attitude information is essential for aircraft navigation and control. This paper presents the results of the attitude determination using an in-house designed low-cost MEMS-based flight information measurement unit. This study proposes a quaternion-based extended Kalman filter to integrate the traditional quaternion and gravitational force decomposition methods for attitude determination algorithm. The proposed extended Kalman filter utilizes the evolution of the four elements in the quaternion method for attitude determination as the dynamic model, with the four elements as the states of the filter. The attitude angles obtained from the gravity computations and from the electronic magnetic sensors are regarded as the measurement of the filter. The immeasurable gravity accelerations are deduced from the outputs of the three axes accelerometers, the relative accelerations, and the accelerations due to body rotation. The constraint of the four elements of the quaternion method is treated as a perfect measurement and is integrated into the filter computation. Approximations of the time-varying noise variances of the measured signals are discussed and presented with details through Taylor series expansions. The algorithm is intuitive, easy to implement, and reliable for long-term high dynamic maneuvers. Moreover, a set of flight test data is utilized to demonstrate the success and practicality of the proposed algorithm and the filter design

    NEW START: THE LIFE EXPERIENCES OF RECOVERING SUICIDAL ADOLESCENTS

    Background: Suicide is a serious global health problem and the second leading cause of death for adolescents in Taiwan. Previous studies have typically explored the causes of suicide; however, scant research has considered suicide recovery contexts, leading to the inability to developing effective suicide prevention strategies.Aim: Exploring the life experiences of adolescents during their suicide recovery processes.Method: A descriptive phenomenology research design was employed. The participants comprised 6 outpatient young adult who possessed histories of suicide and recovering from attempted suicide. Semi-structured, one-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted and Colaizzi’s (1978) methods were used for data analysis. Results: The main identified dimension was “new start” which comprised the following five major themes: conversion of suicidal thoughts, awareness of change, loving attachments, the emotional regulation, and the future prospects. Conclusion: Although adolescents are a high-risk population for suicide, they demonstrate recovery power. The results of this study should provide a reference for professional personnel to assist teenagers in recognizing and using internal and external resources, discovering the value of life and hopes for the future, and reducing the risk of suicide

    Major Complications and Associated Risk Factors of Transrectal Ultrasound Guided Prostate Needle Biopsy: A Retrospective Study of 1875 Cases in Taiwan

    Background/PurposeComplications from transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided prostate needle biopsy are occasionally encountered in the daily practice of urologists. We tried to determine the associated risk factors of patients who suffered from major complications that required hospitalization after TRUS guided prostate needle biopsies.MethodsWe did a retrospective review of 1875 TRUS guided prostate biopsies performed between January 2002 and December 2005. We defined major complications as patients with complications that needed hospitalization. We analyzed the association between biopsy complications and suspected factors, including age, prostate volume, patient's underlying disease, selection of prophylactic antibiotics, biopsy core numbers (6, 12, and 15 cores), and antiplatelet/anticoagulant usage.ResultsThere were 124 patients (6.6%) with major complication. These major complications were categorized as acute prostatitis (3.8%), acute urinary retention (2.1%), hematuria (1.9%), rectal bleeding (0.2%), epididymitis (0.2%), sepsis (0.05%), and vasovagal syncope (0.05%). Patients with larger prostate size were noted to have higher risk of developing transient acute prostatitis and acute urinary retention after prostate biopsy. In contrast, age, prophylactic antibiotics (levofloxacin and pipemidic acid), underlying diseases (diabetic mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cerebrovascular accident, coronary artery disease), increased biopsy core numbers, and antiplatelet/anticoagulant usage were not associated with major complications after prostate biopsy.ConclusionTRUS guided prostate needle biopsy is a safe diagnostic tool in most elderly males with or without systemic underlying disease

    G-quadruplex RNA motifs influence gene expression in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

In human cells, they can influence replication, transcription and telomere maintenance in DNA, or translation, transcript processing and stability of RNA. We have previously showed that G-quadruplexes are detectable in the DNA of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, despite a very highly A/T-biased genome with unusually few guanine-rich sequences. Here, we show that RNA G-quadruplexes can also form in P. falciparum RNA, using rG4-seq for transcriptome-wide structure-specific RNA probing. Many of the motifs, detected here via the rG4seeker pipeline, have non-canonical forms and would not be predicted by standard in silico algorithms. However, in vitro biophysical assays verified formation of non-canonical motifs. The G-quadruplexes in the P. falciparum transcriptome are frequently clustered in certain genes and associated with regions encoding low-complexity peptide repeats. They are overrepresented in particular classes of genes, notably those that encode PfEMP1 virulence factors, stress response genes and DNA binding proteins. In vitro translation experiments and in vivo measures of translation efficiency showed that G-quadruplexes can influence the translation of P. falciparum mRNAs.     Evidence for Factorization in Three-body B --> D(*) K- K0 Decays

    Motivated by recent experimental results, we use a factorization approach to study the three-body B --> D(*) K- K0 decay modes. Two mechanisms are proposed for kaon pair production: current-produced (from vacuum) and transition (from B meson). The Bbar0 --> D(*)+ K- K0 decay is governed solely by the current-produced mechanism. As the kaon pair can be produced only by the vector current, the matrix element can be extracted from e+ e- --> K Kbar processes via isospin relations. The decay rates obtained this way are in good agreement with experiment. Both current-produced and transition processes contribute to B- --> D(*)0 K- K0 decays. By using QCD counting rules and the measured B- --> D(*)0 K- K0 decay rates, the measured decay spectra can be understood.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    We found a virulent closely related clone (Panton-Valentine leukocidin–positive, SCCmec V:ST59) of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in inpatients and outpatients in Taiwan. The isolates were found mostly in wounds but were also detected in blood, ear, respiratory, and other specimens; all were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

    Integrated modelling of cost-effective siting and operation of flow-control infrastructure for river ecosystem conservation

    Wetland and floodplain ecosystems along many regulated rivers are highly stressed, primarily due to a lack of environmental flows of appropriate magnitude, frequency, duration, and timing to support ecological functions. In the absence of increased environmental flows, the ecological health of river ecosystems can be enhanced by the operation of existing and new flow-control infrastructure (weirs and regulators) to return more natural environmental flow regimes to specific areas. However, determining the optimal investment and operation strategies over time is a complex task due to several factors including the multiple environmental values attached to wetlands, spatial and temporal heterogeneity and dependencies, nonlinearity, and time-dependent decisions. This makes for a very large number of decision variables over a long planning horizon. The focus of this paper is the development of a nonlinear integer programming model that accommodates these complexities. The mathematical objective aims to return the natural flow regime of key components of river ecosystems in terms of flood timing, flood duration, and interflood period. We applied a 2-stage recursive heuristic using tabu search to solve the model and tested it on the entire South Australian River Murray floodplain. We conclude that modern meta-heuristics can be used to solve the very complex nonlinear problems with spatial and temporal dependencies typical of environmental flow allocation in regulated river ecosystems. The model has been used to inform the investment in, and operation of, flow-control infrastructure in the South Australian River Murray.<br /
