    \u27Gifts From Amin\u27: The Resettlement, Integration, and Identities of Ugandan Asian Refugees in Canada

    Given the current climate of the global refugee crisis it is vital to investigate why and how Canada has admitted refugees in the past. Prior to the creation of formal refugee policy, several notable resettlement initiatives occurred within the country in the postwar period including the arrival of Hungarian and Czechoslovakian refugees. This is the first academic study on the resettlement, integration, and identities of Ugandan Asian refugees who arrived in Canada between 1972 and 1974. They were the largest group of non-European and predominately Muslim refugees to arrive in Canada before the official creation of formal refugee policy in 1976. The purpose of the dissertation is to humanize those who have and are being persecuted around the world for various reasons including political belief, economic despair, natural disasters, sexual orientation, religious affiliations, and racial intolerance. By recapturing the life histories of Ugandan Asian refugees, the dissertation refutes the essentialization of refugees as subjects to be admitted based on a nation’s political leanings, national security interests, and varying domestic concerns. Oral histories with Ugandan Asian refugees in Canada reinvigorate the broader Canadian historical narrative with the life stories of refugees that have been living in Canada for over 40 years. As refugees have transitioned to becoming active Canadians citizens, the project uses a direct case study to explore the motivations behind Canada’s decision to admit Ugandan Asians while simultaneously highlighting how the collaboration between the federal government and numerous voluntary organizations facilitated the adaptation and integration processes for refugees. Their multiple affiliations to Uganda, South Asia, and Canada are discussed in various ways that embody the pluralistic nature of Canadian society. Their expressions of self demonstrate how individuals can be dedicated nationals of a country while maintaining cultural, ethnic, and religious ties

    Privacy Vulnerabilities in the Practices of Repairing Broken Digital Artifacts in Bangladesh

    This paper presents a study on the privacy concerns associated with the practice of repairing broken digital objects in Bangladesh. Historically, repair of old or broken technologies has received less attention in ICTD scholarship than design, development, or use. As a result, the potential privacy risks associated with repair practices have remained mostly unaddressed. This paper describes our three-month long ethnographic study that took place at ten major repair sites in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We show a variety of ways in which the privacy of an individual’s personal data may be compromised during the repair process. We also examine people’s perceptions around privacy in repair, and its connections with their broader social and cultural values. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for future research to strengthen the repair ecosystem in developing countries. Taken together, our findings contribute to the growing discourse around post-use cycles of technology

    Optimization Techniques of Islanded Hybrid Microgrid System

    The utilization of energy is increasing day by day, it is an unavoidable truth. This large demand for energy cannot be satisfied by the conventional power sources alone. Sustainable power sources, for example, solar and wind turbine-based energy system are the most effective and both economically and environmentally feasible. The Hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) is a recent concept in the field of sustainable development which joins at least two renewable power sources like wind turbine, solar module and other inexhaustible sources such as ocean energy, fuel cell etc. This chapter starts with an audit by addressing the possible difficulties that can occur while a solar power plant and the wind farm will be integrated together to supply power to the main grid or in a islanded manner. This chapter gives an overview of the optimization techniques that can improve the integration of the hybrid systems to the grid as well as with the islanded load. This review also sheds significant light on the techniques to improve the equality of a grid integrated solar-wind hybrid energy system. It also includes the critical findings on the strategies that are necessary to build an efficient grid-connected and islanded solar-wind hybrid energy system

    Management of infected non-union of lower limb long bone fractures using ilizarov technique: a study of outcomes

    Background: Nonunion of long bone fractures is a common condition treated by an orthopaedic surgeon. Many nonunions can be treated effectively by internal fixation with or without bone grafting but, an infected nonunion can prove to be a tough challenge. The Ilizarov method is effective in managing infected nonunion of long bones. This study aims to assess the outcome of management of infected nonunions of long bones of lower limb with Ilizarov Ring fixator using bone and functional results as per Association for the Study and Application of Methods of Ilizarov (ASAMI) Scoring System.Methods: We retrospectively analysed 18 patients (16 Male: 2 Female; Mean age 43.2 years) managed with Ilizarov technique for an infected tibial or femoral nonunion between 01 January 2013 and 31 December 2014. They were followed up for an average of 25.4 months after removal of fixator. They were assessed for functional and Bone (radiological) outcomes using the Association for the Study and Application of Methods of Ilizarov (ASAMI) criteria.Results: 17 limbs were salvaged and union could be achieved. One limb required amputation due to severe persistent intractable infection. None required any additional skeletal stabilisation after removal of fixator frame except casting in a few patients for a period of 6 weeks. Mean time to union was 211.83 days (range 136 - 320days/median 184) or 7.01 months. As per the ASAMI score, Bone results were excellent in 10, good in 5, fair in 2 and poor in 1. Functionally 7 were graded as excellent, 6 as good, 3 as fair and 1 as poor and 1 patient underwent amputation.Conclusions: The Ilizarov’s method remains one of the most versatile and successful means of achieving bone healing in infected nonunions of long bones of lower limbs with additional benefits of correcting bone defects, deformities and limb length inequalities.

    Owner Identity Verification in the Internet of Connected Vehicles: Zero Trust Based Solution

    On the Internet of Connected Vehicles, a vehicle has to communicate bi-directionally with several devices for establishing a shared network for inter-vehicle and intra-vehicle connectivity. These connection protocols are commonly structured to connect all the individual components with an implicit degree of trust, which is supposed to protect the whole system from unauthorized users. Technologies like Automotive Ethernet tend to increase security by reducing the implicit trust within the local network devices. However, the lack of individual security protocols in vehicle-to-vehicle communication still keeps the possession of vulnerability to hacks, external attacks, and further disruption. This is where Zero Trust Architecture can become a reliable technology for the exchange of information in between vehicles. Zero trust is a security system that means no one is trusted by default and verification is required from anyone or any device willing to get connected to the intra-vehicle network. In this paper, we have scoped the preliminary and most vital step of this system: verifying the owner identity of a vehicle with zero trust manner. Our approach involves recognizing vehicle license plates and utilizing the license information for retrieving the vehicle owner details to establish trust before allowing connection to the network. Our proposed methodology operates with 85\% to 99\% accuracy on the license recognition part within recognizable distances using PyTesseract OCR. Reliability to the zero trust solution is gained through necessary information retrieved using GET and POST requests to and from the corresponding driving license information databases

    Comparative Analysis Carried Out on Modern Indentation Techniques for the Measurement of Mechanical Properties: A Review

    Nowadays many indentation techniques are being commonly employed for determining some mechanical properties (harness, elastic modulus, toughness, etc.) using simple method of measuring the indentation depth. On the basis of measurement of depth of penetration, indentation technique has be classified into major categories i.e. microindentation and nanoindentation. Nanoindentation technique uses indirect method of determining the contact area as the depth of penetration is measured in nanometers, while in conventional indentation the area in contact is measured by elementary measurement of the residual area after the indenter is removed from the specimen. Dynamic hardness is the best result of dynamic indentation which can be expressed as the ratio of energy consumed during a rapid indentation to the volume of indentation.     Temperature Regulation of Photovoltaic Module Using Phase Change Material: A Numerical Analysis and Experimental Investigation

    This work represents an effective design of a temperature regulated PV module by integrating phase change materials for Malaysian weather condition. Through the numerical analysis and experimental investigation it has been shown that if a PCM layer of width 0.02 m of RT 35 is used as a cooling arrangement with a PV module, the surface temperature of the module is reduced by 10°C, which remains constant for a period of 4–6 hours. This reduction of temperature implies the increase in conversion efficiency of the module. Experiment as well as investigation has been carried out considering typical Malaysian weather. Obtained result has been validated by using experimental prototype and comparative analysis

    Optimal sizing and assessment of a renewable rich standalone hybrid microgrid considering conventional dispatch methodologies

    This paper presents an evaluation of the optimized design of an off-grid hybrid microgrid for alternative load dispatch algorithms with the determination of the most optimal sizing of each equipment, analyzing the voltage and frequency outputs and various costs of the proposed microgrids. Kushighat and Rajendro Bazar, two geographical locations in Bangladesh have been taken as test sites. The proposed microgrids incorporating diesel generator, renewable resources, storage device, and 23.31 kW of demand have been optimized for five conventional load dispatch methodologies: HOMER predictive dispatch, Load Following, Generator Order, Cycle Charging, and Combined Dispatch to reduce the system's net present cost, gas discharge and cost of energy. HOMER (Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Electric Renewables) software has been used for the analysis to determine the optimal sizes and costing and the voltage-frequency performances of the microgrids are analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink. From our analysis, load following is determined as the superior approach with a minimum operating cost of 3738 USD, net present cost of 152,023 USD, CO2 discharge of 3375 kg/year and cost of energy of 0.208 USD /kWh along with a steady voltage-frequency output. Combined dispatch is determined as the worst strategy for the proposed microgrids with the highest energy cost of 0.532 USD /kWh, the operational cost of 15,394 USD, net present cost of 415,030 USD, and high CO2 discharge. At the end of this work, a comparative analysis between the proposed design, another hybrid, and traditional generation plant is also presented.
