Decay of the Z Boson into Scalar Particles
In extensions of the standard model, light scalar particles are often
possible because of symmetry considerations. We study the decay of the Z boson
into such particles. In particular, we consider for illustration the scalar
sector of a recently proposed model of the 17-keV neutrino which satisfies all

Aromatic hydrocarbons as ozone precursors before and after outbreak of the 2008 financial crisis in the Pearl River Delta region, south China
In the second half of 2008 China's highly industrialized Pearl River Delta (PRD) region was hard-hit by the financial crisis (FC). This study reports volatile organic compounds measured in the PRD during November-December in both 2007 before the FC and 2008 after the FC. While total mixing ratios of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) on average were only about 7% lower from 40.2 ppbv in 2007 to 37.5 ppbv in 2008, their ozone formation potentials (OFPs) dropped about 30%, resulting from about 55% plummet of aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) against a greater than 20% increase of total alkanes/alkenes. The elevated alkanes and alkenes in 2008 could be explained by greater emissions from vehicle exhausts and LPG combustion due to rapid increase of vehicle numbers and LPG consumption; the drop of AHs could be explained by reduced emissions from industries using AH-containing solvents due to the influence of the FC, as indicated by much lower ratios of toluene to benzene and of xylenes/ trichloroethylene/tetrachloroethylene to carbon monoxide (CO) in 2008. Source apportionment by positive matrix factorization (PMF) also revealed much less contribution of industry solvents to total anthropogenic NMHCs and particularly to toluene and xylenes in 2008 than in 2007. Based on PMF reconstructed source contributions, calculated OFPs by industrial emissions were responsible for 40.8% in 2007 in contrast to 18.4% in 2008. Further investigation into local industry output statistics suggested that the plummet of AHs in 2008 should be attributed to small enterprises, which contributed largely to ambient AHs due to their huge numbers and non-existent emission treatment, but were much more influenced by the FC. © 2012. Mapping and Investigation of Two Novel Candidate Genes for Growth and Meat Quality traits in the Pig
Two new candidate genes for growth and meat quality traits were studied. The porcine beta-tropomyosin (TPM2) and the agouti-related protein (AGRP) genes were chosen based on their presumed role in growth and meat quality traits. These genes were genetically mapped and were linked to several markers on porcine chromosomes (SSC) 1 and 6, respectively. Both genes also were physically mapped using a pig/rodent somatic cell hybrid panel. The physical locations of the genes are consistent with linkage results and previous chromosome painting results indicating conserved (similar) regions between human and pig chromosomes. Association studies of the AGRP and TPM2 polymorphisms with growth and meat quality traits in commercial pig populations provided preliminary evidence that an AGRP polymorphism may be associated with variation in several traits of interest for pig breedin
Racial and cultural minority experiences and perceptions of health care provision in a mid-western region

Background: Disparities across a number of health indicators between the general population and particular racial and cultural minority groups including African Americans, Native Americans and Latino/a Americans have been well documented. Some evidence suggests that particular groups may receive poorer standards of care due to biased beliefs or attitudes held by health professionals. Less research has been conducted in specifically non-urban areas with smaller minority populations. Methods: This study explored the self-reported health care experiences for 117 racial and cultural minority Americans residing in a Mid-Western jurisdiction. Prior health care experiences (including perceived discrimination), attitudes towards cultural competence and satisfaction with health care interactions were ascertained and compared across for four sub-groups (African-American, Native American, Latino/a American, Asian American). A series of multiple regression models then explored relationships between a concert of independent variables (cultural strength, prior experiences of discrimination, education level) and health care service preferences and outcomes. Results: Overall, racial/cultural minority groups (African Americans, Native Americans, Latino/a Americans, and Asian Americans) reported general satisfaction with current healthcare providers, low levels of both health care provider racism and poor treatment, high levels of cultural strength and good access to health care services. Native American participants however, reported more frequent episodes of poor treatment compared to other groups. Incidentally, poor treatment predicted lower levels of treatment satisfaction and racist experiences predicted being afraid of attending conventional health care services. Cultural strength predicted a preference for consulting a health care professional from the same cultural background. Conclusions: This study provided a rare insight into minority health care expectations and experiences in a region with comparatively lower proportions of racial and cultural minorities. Additionally, the study explored the impact of cultural strength on health care interactions and outcomes. While the bulk of the sample reported satisfaction with treatment, the notable minority of participants reporting poor treatment is still of some concern. Cultural strength did not appear to impact health care behaviours although it predicted a desire for cultural matching. Random sequential adsorption on a dashed line
We study analytically and numerically a model of random sequential adsorption
(RSA) of segments on a line, subject to some constraints suggested by two kinds
of physical situations:
- deposition of dimers on a lattice where the sites have a spatial extension;
- deposition of extended particles which must overlap one (or several)
adsorbing sites on the substrate.
Both systems involve discrete and continuous degrees of freedom, and, in one
dimension, are equivalent to our model, which depends on one length parameter.
When this parameter is varied, the model interpolates between a variety of
known situations : monomers on a lattice, "car-parking" problem, dimers on a
lattice. An analysis of the long-time behaviour of the coverage as a function
of the parameter exhibits an anomalous 1/t^2 approach to the jamming limit at
the transition point between the fast exponential kinetics, characteristic of
the lattice model, and the 1/t law of the continuous one.Comment: 14 pages (Latex) + 4 Postscript figure
The Hawaiian Algal Database: a laboratory LIMS and online resource for biodiversity data
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Organization and presentation of biodiversity data is greatly facilitated by databases that are specially designed to allow easy data entry and organized data display. Such databases also have the capacity to serve as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). The Hawaiian Algal Database was designed to showcase specimens collected from the Hawaiian Archipelago, enabling users around the world to compare their specimens with our photographs and DNA sequence data, and to provide lab personnel with an organizational tool for storing various biodiversity data types.</p> <p>Description</p> <p>We describe the Hawaiian Algal Database, a comprehensive and searchable database containing photographs and micrographs, geo-referenced collecting information, taxonomic checklists and standardized DNA sequence data. All data for individual samples are linked through unique accession numbers. Users can search online for sample information by accession number, numerous levels of taxonomy, or collection site. At the present time the database contains data representing over 2,000 samples of marine, freshwater and terrestrial algae from the Hawaiian Archipelago. These samples are primarily red algae, although other taxa are being added.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The Hawaiian Algal Database is a digital repository for Hawaiian algal samples and acts as a LIMS for the laboratory. Users can make use of the online search tool to view and download specimen photographs and micrographs, DNA sequences and relevant habitat data, including georeferenced collecting locations. Critical behavior of thermopower and conductivity at the metal-insulator transition in high-mobility Si-MOSFET's
This letter reports thermopower and conductivity measurements through the
metal-insulator transition for 2-dimensional electron gases in high mobility
Si-MOSFET's. At low temperatures both thermopower and conductivity show
critical behavior as a function of electron density which is very similar to
that expected for an Anderson transition. In particular, when approaching the
critical density from the metallic side the diffusion thermopower appears to
diverge and the conductivity vanishes. On the insulating side the thermopower
shows an upturn with decreasing temperature.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figure
Overcoming the compensation of acceptors in GaN:Mg by defect complex formation
In GaN:Mg, the MgGa acceptor is compensated extensively by the formation of nitrogen vacancies (VN) and Mg interstitials (Mgi). However, we show that such compensation can be overcome by forming two kinds of Mg-rich complexes: one that contains VN and the other that contains only MgGa and Mgi. Such complexing not only neutralizes VN and Mgi but also forms better complex acceptors that have lower formation energies and smaller hole localization energies than isolated MgGa. Our results help explain the different doping behaviors in samples grown by different methods
Adsorption of Line Segments on a Square Lattice
We study the deposition of line segments on a two-dimensional square lattice.
The estimates for the coverage at jamming obtained by Monte-Carlo simulations
and by -order time-series expansion are successfully compared. The
non-trivial limit of adsorption of infinitely long segments is studied, and the
