Precision measurement of light shifts at two off-resonant wavelengths in a single trapped Ba+ ion and determination of atomic dipole matrix elements
We define and measure the ratio (R) of the vector ac-Stark effect (or light
shift) in the 6S_1/2 and 5D_3/2 states of a single trapped barium ion to 0.2%
accuracy at two different off-resonant wavelengths. We earlier found R =
-11.494(13) at 514.531nm and now report the value at 1111.68nm, R = +0.4176(8).
These observations together yield a value of the matrix element,
previously unknown in the literature. Also, comparison of our results with an
ab initio calculation of dynamic polarizability would yield a new test of
atomic theory and improve the understanding of atomic structure needed to

Pleurisy and bilateral pleural effusions after administration of atorvastatin
Atorvastatin is a widely used cholesterol-lowering agent. Although generally safe and well tolerated, a number of drug side effects have been reported. We report only the second case of atorvastatin-induced pleural effusions, presenting as pleurisy, and the first case from Ethiopia. We believe our patient had this association based on the temporal onset of symptoms, the otherwise negative evaluation, and the resolution of findings once atorvastatin was discontinued. Clinicians need to consider this relationship when evaluating unexplained pleurisy and pleural effusions in patients taking atorvastatin
An atomic clock with instability
Atomic clocks have been transformational in science and technology, leading
to innovations such as global positioning, advanced communications, and tests
of fundamental constant variation. Next-generation optical atomic clocks can
extend the capability of these timekeepers, where researchers have long aspired
toward measurement precision at 1 part in . This milestone will
enable a second revolution of new timing applications such as relativistic
geodesy, enhanced Earth- and space-based navigation and telescopy, and new
tests on physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we describe the development
and operation of two optical lattice clocks, both utilizing spin-polarized,
ultracold atomic ytterbium. A measurement comparing these systems demonstrates

Linearized model Fokker-Planck collision operators for gyrokinetic simulations. II. Numerical implementation and tests
A set of key properties for an ideal dissipation scheme in gyrokinetic
simulations is proposed, and implementation of a model collision operator
satisfying these properties is described. This operator is based on the exact
linearized test-particle collision operator, with approximations to the
field-particle terms that preserve conservation laws and an H-Theorem. It
includes energy diffusion, pitch-angle scattering, and finite Larmor radius
effects corresponding to classical (real-space) diffusion. The numerical
implementation in the continuum gyrokinetic code GS2 is fully implicit and
guarantees exact satisfaction of conservation properties. Numerical results are
presented showing that the correct physics is captured over the entire range of
collisionalities, from the collisionless to the strongly collisional regimes,

DAVID-WS: a stateful web service to facilitate gene/protein list analysis
Summary: The database for annotation, visualization and integrated discovery (DAVID), which can be freely accessed at http://david.abcc.ncifcrf.gov/, is a web-based online bioinformatics resource that aims to provide tools for the functional interpretation of large lists of genes/proteins. It has been used by researchers from more than 5000 institutes worldwide, with a daily submission rate of ∼1200 gene lists from ∼400 unique researchers, and has been cited by more than 6000 scientific publications. However, the current web interface does not support programmatic access to DAVID, and the uniform resource locator (URL)-based application programming interface (API) has a limit on URL size and is stateless in nature as it uses URL request and response messages to communicate with the server, without keeping any state-related details. DAVID-WS (web service) has been developed to automate user tasks by providing stateful web services to access DAVID programmatically without the need for human interactions
Stabilization of Deterministically Chaotic Systems by Interference and Quantum Measurements: The Ikeda Map Case
We propose a method which can effectively stabilize fixed points in the
classical and quantum dynamics of a phase-sensitive chaotic system with
feedback. It is based on feeding back a selected quantum sub-ensemble whose
phase and amplitude stabilize the otherwise chaotic dynamics. Although the
method is rather general, we apply it to realizations of the inherently chaotic
Ikeda map. One suggested realization involves the Mach-Zender interferometer
with Kerr nonlinearity. Another realization involves a trapped ion interacting

The roles of motivation and ability in controlling the consequences of stereotype suppression
Two experiments investigated the conditions under which previously suppressed stereotypes are applied in impression formation. In Experiment 1, the extent to which a previously suppressed racial stereotype influenced subsequent impressions depended on the race of the target who was subsequently encountered. Whereas impressions of race-unspecified targets were assimilated to the stereotype following its suppression, no such effects were observed when the target belonged to the racial group whose stereotype had been initially suppressed. These results demonstrate that when perceivers are motivated to avoid stereo-typing individuals, the influence of a stereotype that has been previously activated through suppression is minimized. Experiment 2 demonstrated that these processing goals effectively reduce the impact of suppression-activated stereotypes only when perceivers have sufficient capacity to enact the goals. These results suggest that both sufficient motivation and capacity are necessary to prevent heightened stereotyping following stereotype suppression
