    Interpolation Techniques for Overset Grids

    The use of finite difference schemes in computational aeroacoustics requires the use of structured grids incomputational space. Complex geometries in the physical space can be modeled using multiple overlapping grids that are transformed into computational space. In this work, finite difference schemes are used that necessitate the addition of psuedo- or ghost-points in the overlap region of the grids for closure of the difference stencil. The functional values at these ghost points must be approximated from the values at the original grid points. This paper investigates interpolation techniques for these overset grids. An n th order interpolation scheme using Lagrange polynomials is applied to the one dimensional (ID) wave propagation problem to test the effects of increasing the interpolation order. This is done for both equal and unequal sized overset grids. Preliminary results from two dimensional (2D) grids will be presented

    Economy-wide and distributional impacts of an oil price shock on the south African economy

    As crude oil prices reach new highs, there is renewed concern about how external shocks will affect growth and poverty in developing countries. This paper describes a macro-micro framework for examining the structural and distributional consequences of a significant external shock-an increase in the world price of oil-on the South African economy. The authors merge results from a highly disaggregative computable general equilibrium model and a micro-simulation analysis of earnings and occupational choice based on socio-demographic characteristics of the household. The model provides changes in employment, wages, and prices that are used in the micro-simulation. The analysis finds that a 125 percent increase in the price of crude oil and refined petroleum reduces employment and GDP by approximately 2 percent, and reduces household consumption by approximately 7 percent. The oil price shock tends to increase the disparity between rich and poor. The adverse impact of the oil price shock is felt by the poorer segment of the formal labor market in the form of declining wages and increased unemployment. Unemployment hits mostly low and medium-skilled workers in the services sector. High-skilled households, on average, gain from the oil price shock. Their income rises and their spending basket is less skewed toward food and other goods that are most affected by changes in oil prices.Economic Theory&Research,,Labor Policies,Markets and Market Access,Access to Finance

    Low-frequency incommensurate magnetic response in strongly correlated systems

    It is shown that in the t-J model of Cu-O planes at low frequencies the dynamic spin structure factor is peaked at incommensurate wave vectors (1/2+-delta,1/2)$, (1/2,1/2+-delta). The incommensurability is connected with the momentum dependencies of the magnon frequency and damping near the antiferromagnetic wave vector. The behavior of the incommensurate peaks is similar to that observed in La_{2-x}(Ba,Sr)_xCuO_{4+y} and YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}: for hole concentrations 0.02<x<=0.12 we find that delta is nearly proportional to x, while for x>0.12 it tends to saturation. The incommensurability disappears with increasing temperature. Generally the incommensurate magnetic response is not accompanied by an inhomogeneity of the carrier density.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Analysis of the thermomechanical inconsistency of some extended hydrodynamic models at high Knudsen number

    There are some hydrodynamic equations that, while their parent kinetic equation satisfies fundamental mechanical properties, appear themselves to violate mechanical or thermodynamic properties. This article aims to shed some light on the source of this problem. Starting with diffusive volume hydrodynamic models, the microscopic temporal and spatial scales are first separated at the kinetic level from the macroscopic scales at the hydrodynamic level. Then we consider Klimontovich’s spatial stochastic version of the Boltzmann kinetic equation, and show that, for small local Knudsen numbers, the stochastic term vanishes and the kinetic equation becomes the Boltzmann equation. The collision integral dominates in the small local Knudsen number regime, which is associated with the exact traditional continuum limit. We find a sub-domain of the continuum range which the conventional Knudsen number classification does not account for appropriately. In this sub-domain, it is possible to obtain a fully mechanically-consistent volume (or mass) diffusion model that satisfies the second law of thermodynamics on the grounds of extended non-local-equilibrium thermodynamics

    The signed loop approach to the Ising model: foundations and critical point

    The signed loop method is a beautiful way to rigorously study the two-dimensional Ising model with no external field. In this paper, we explore the foundations of the method, including details that have so far been neglected or overlooked in the literature. We demonstrate how the method can be applied to the Ising model on the square lattice to derive explicit formal expressions for the free energy density and two-point functions in terms of sums over loops, valid all the way up to the self-dual point. As a corollary, it follows that the self-dual point is critical both for the behaviour of the free energy density, and for the decay of the two-point functions.Comment: 38 pages, 7 figures, with an improved Introduction.
