This thesis is part of an investigation to determine the feasibility of using ozonation to control odors from the Fairmont municipal water supply. The primary source of water for Fairmont is Budd Lake. Odors develop in this lake water from the decomposition of organic matter such as algae and vegetation. Ozone was applied to the water at dosages of approximately 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8,12, 16, 20 and 24 mg/1 at contact times of 2.5, 5, 110, 20 and 30 minutes using a continuous flow ozonation pilot system. Odor intensities of these waters were then measured in terms of Threshold Odor Numbers. The results indicated that ozone dosages from 1.5 to 4 mg/1 at contact times of at least 30 minutes achieved sui table results under roost conditions. Dosages up to 8 mg/1 were required in a few instances. These investigations have been described in detail by Munce. The primary objectives of the investigations described in this thesis are as follows. 1. To determine the effect of ozonation, at the recommended operating conditions for odor control, on the flocculation efficiency, chlorine demand, content of organic matter and potential for the formation of trihalamethanes of the water. 2. To determine if any correlation exists between the ultra-violet absorbance and trihalamethane concentration of the water. A high correlation would allow the relatively inexpensive absorbance analysis to be used instead of the relatively expensive trihalamethane analysis to estimate the trihalamethane content of the water. 3. To determine the estimated construction and operating costs of ozonation facilities for odor control in Fairmont

This case describes the attempts of a small residential construction company to close on a home that they have built. The problem for the characters in question is how to proceed in this situation given the fact that a third party lien has been put against their properties because the developer they bought the properties from had not paid his landscaper. The case has a difficulty level appropriate for a freshmen and/or sophomore level course. The case is designed to be taught in one to two class periods based upon the authors’ prior experiences in teaching this case. Instructional time may vary from 50 to 100 minutes depending upon the instructional approach employed while it is expected that between three to six hours of outside preparation by students will be required (depending upon the instructor’s choice of class preparation and debriefing methods)

Stephen Hodgetts read the e-mail over and over again and still could hardly believe what he had read. He had just come back from his vacation, well rested and refreshed, and this e-mail had dampened his high enthusiasm. It took time to absorb such bad news and for Hodgetts to get over his incredulity. Yet in the end Hodgetts accepted the truth—a deep, dark terrible truth that would not go away. Robert Davis, his business partner’s son, had confirmed in an e-mail his worst fears about their newest business partner, David Russ. Many thoughts were running through his mind simultaneously yet each screamed to be heard. “How could he and his partner Richard Davis have been so blind, so trusting?” “How could Russ not have heeded the advice of his business partner, Richard Davis, Russ’s former English professor?” And most important, “What was now going to happen to their new business?” Yet the one thought that continued to echo among them all was surprisingly a quote from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved character, Sherlock Holmes: “But there are always some lunatics about. It would be a dull world without them.

The Verbal Aggression of Spectators at Youth Baseball Games: Investigating the Impact of Competition Level, Team Identification, and Fan Dysfunction

Previous research had found that level of team identification was positively associated with aggression at youth sporting events (Wann, Weaver, Belva, Ladd, & Armstrong, 2015).  The current investigation was designed to extend this work by incorporating fan dysfunction into the model (i.e., fans who are confrontational and frequently complain).  Spectators at either a recreational or select (i.e., travel) youth baseball game completed a survey packet assessing demographics, team identification with their favorite Major League Baseball team, identification with the youth team, fan dysfunction, and hostile and instrumental verbal aggression directed toward officials and opponents.  Results indicated that, contrary to expectations, team identification was not a unique predictor of verbal aggression.  Rather, fan dysfunction predicted each form of aggression, aggression toward both targets, and total aggression.
