Dark Lancaster
In this position paper we'll outline a few ongoing and planned projects at Lancaster that are not all sweetness and light. In some we are interested in some of the darker aspects of human nature: frustration when things go wrong in order to design games with the right emotional impact; and anger of those seeking jobs in order to help train those who need to defuse fraught situations. In others we deliberately seek to design ‘bad’ situations; obviously this is necessary to study issues like frustration, but also we design bad things in order to understand what is good! Finally, there are times when good is dark and the bright light of day needs to be shrouded just a little
Topic-dependent sentiment analysis of financial blogs
While most work in sentiment analysis in the financial domain has focused on the use of content from traditional finance news, in this work we concentrate on more subjective sources of information, blogs. We aim to automatically determine the sentiment of financial bloggers towards companies and their stocks. To do this we develop a corpus of financial blogs, annotated with polarity of sentiment with respect to a number of companies. We conduct an analysis of the annotated corpus, from which we show there is a significant level of topic shift within this collection, and also illustrate the difficulty that human annotators have when annotating certain sentiment categories. To deal with the problem of topic shift within blog articles, we propose text extraction techniques to create topic-specific sub-documents, which we use to train a sentiment classifier. We show that such approaches provide a substantial improvement over full documentclassification and that word-based approaches perform better than sentence-based or paragraph-based approaches
Exploring the use of paragraph-level annotations for sentiment analysis of financial blogs
In this paper we describe our work in the area of topic-based sentiment analysis in the domain of financial blogs. We explore the use of paragraph-level and document-level annotations, examining how additional information from paragraph-level annotations can be used to increase the accuracy of document-level sentiment classification. We acknowledge the additional effort required to provide these paragraph-level annotations, and so we compare these findings against an automatic means of generating topic-specific sub-documents
Exploring Bluetooth based Mobile Phone Interaction with the Hermes Photo Display
One of the most promising possibilities for supporting user interaction with public displays is the use of personal mobile phones. Furthermore, by utilising Bluetooth users should have the capability to interact with displays without incurring personal financial connectivity costs. However, despite the relative maturity of Bluetooth as a standard and its widespread adoption in today’s mobile phones, little exploration seems to have taken place in this area - despite its apparent significant potential. This paper describe the findings of an exploratory study nvolving our Hermes Photo Display which has been extended to enable users with a suitable phone to both send and receive pictures over Bluetooth. We present both the technical challenges of working with Bluetooth and, through our user study, we present initial insights into general user acceptability issues and the potential for such a display to facilitate notions of community
How Early Nutrition and Foundational Cognitive Skills Interconnect? Evidence from Two Developing Countries
We use unique data collected in Ethiopia and Peru as part of the Young Lives Study to investigate the relationship between early undernutrition and four foundational cognitive skills, the first two of which measure executive functioning: working memory, inhibitory control, long-term memory, and implicit learning. We exploit the rich longitudinal data available to control for potential confounders at the household level and for time-invariant community characteristics. We also exploit the availability of data for paired-siblings to obtain household fixed-effects estimates. Overall, we find robust evidence that stunting is negatively related with the development of executive functions, predicting reductions in working memory and inhibitory control by 12.6% and 5.8% of a standard deviation. Our results shed light on the mechanisms that explain the relationship between early nutrition and school achievement tests suggesting that good nutrition is an important determinant of children’s learning capacities
ARCHANGEL: Tamper-proofing Video Archives using Temporal Content Hashes on the Blockchain
We present ARCHANGEL; a novel distributed ledger based system for assuring
the long-term integrity of digital video archives. First, we describe a novel
deep network architecture for computing compact temporal content hashes (TCHs)
from audio-visual streams with durations of minutes or hours. Our TCHs are
sensitive to accidental or malicious content modification (tampering) but
invariant to the codec used to encode the video. This is necessary due to the
curatorial requirement for archives to format shift video over time to ensure
future accessibility. Second, we describe how the TCHs (and the models used to
derive them) are secured via a proof-of-authority blockchain distributed across
multiple independent archives. We report on the efficacy of ARCHANGEL within
the context of a trial deployment in which the national government archives of
the United Kingdom, Estonia and Norway participated.Comment: Accepted to CVPR Blockchain Workshop 201
Changes to DPPC domain structure in the presence of carbon nanoparticles
DPPC (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) is a disaturated lipid capable of forming closely packed monolayers at the air–liquid interface of the lung and allows the surface tension within the alveoli to reduce to almost zero and thus prevent alveolar collapse. Carbon nanoparticles are formed in natural and man-made combustion events, including diesel engines, and are capable of reaching the alveolar epithelium during breathing. In this work, we have used Brewster angle microscopy and neutron reflectivity to study the effect of differing concentrations of carbon nanoparticles on the structure of DPPC monolayer as the monolayer is subject to compression and expansion. The results show that the inclusion of carbon nanoparticles within a DPPC monolayer affects the formation and structure of the lipid domains. The domains lose their circular structure and show a crenated structure as well as a reduction in overall size of the domains. This change in structure is also evident following expansion of the lipid monolayer, suggesting that some carbon nanoparticles may remain associated with the monolayer. This observation could have an important implication regarding the removal of nanosized airborne pollutants from the human lung
ARCHANGEL: Trusted Archives of Digital Public Documents
We present ARCHANGEL; a de-centralised platform for ensuring the long-term
integrity of digital documents stored within public archives. Document
integrity is fundamental to public trust in archives. Yet currently that trust
is built upon institutional reputation --- trust at face value in a centralised
authority, like a national government archive or University. ARCHANGEL proposes
a shift to a technological underscoring of that trust, using distributed ledger
technology (DLT) to cryptographically guarantee the provenance, immutability
and so the integrity of archived documents. We describe the ARCHANGEL
architecture, and report on a prototype of that architecture build over the
Ethereum infrastructure. We report early evaluation and feedback of ARCHANGEL
