Kinematic Age Estimates for 4 Compact Symmetric Objects from the Pearson-Readhead Survey
Based on multi-epoch observations at 15 and 43 GHz with the Very Long
Baseline Array (VLBA) we detect significant angular expansions between the two
hot spots of 4 Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). From these relative motions we
derive kinematic ages of between 300 and 1200 years for the radio emission.
These ages lend support to the idea that CSOs are produced in a recent phase of
activity. These observations also allow us to study the evolution of the hot
spots dynamically in individual sources. In all 4 sources the hot spots are
separating along the source axis, but in 1031+567 the tip of one hot spot
appears to be moving almost orthogonally to the source axis. Jet components,
seen in 3 of the 4 sources observed, are found to be moving relativistically

Recovering a lost baseline: missing kelp forests from a metropolitan coast
© 2008 AuthorThere is concern about historical and continuing loss of canopy-forming algae across the world’s temperate coastline. In South Australia, the sparse cover of canopy-forming algae on the Adelaide metropolitan coast has been of public concern with continuous years of anecdotal evidence culminating in 2 competing views. One view considers that current patterns existed before the onset of urbanisation, whereas the alternate view is that they developed after urbanisation. We tested hypotheses to distinguish between these 2 models, each centred on the reconstruction of historical covers of canopies on the metropolitan coast. Historically, the metropolitan sites were indistinguishable from contemporary populations of reference sites across 70 km (i.e. Gulf St. Vincent), and could also represent a random subset of exposed coastal sites across 2100 km of the greater biogeographic province. Thus there was nothing ‘special’ about the metropolitan sites historically, but today they stand out because they have sparser covers of canopies compared to equivalent locations and times in the gulf and the greater province. This is evidence of wholesale loss of canopy-forming algae (up to 70%) on parts of the Adelaide metropolitan coast since major urbanisation. These findings not only set a research agenda based on the magnitude of loss, but they also bring into question the logic that smaller metropolitan populations of humans create impacts that are trivial relative to that of larger metropolitan centres. Instead, we highlight a need to recognise the ecological context that makes some coastal systems more vulnerable or resistant to increasing human-domination of the world’s coastlines. We discuss challenges to this kind of research that receive little ecological discussion, particularly better leadership and administration, recognising that the systems we study out-live the life spans of individual research groups and operate on spatial scales that exceed the capacity of single research providers.Sean D. On the existence of dyons and dyonic black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory
We study dyonic soliton and black hole solutions of the
Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We prove
the existence of non-trivial dyonic soliton and black hole solutions in a
neighbourhood of the trivial solution. For these solutions the magnetic gauge
field function has no zeros and we conjecture that at least some of these
non-trivial solutions will be stable. The global existence proof uses local
existence results and a non-linear perturbation argument based on the (Banach

The impact of dispensing fees on compliance with opioid substitution therapy: a mixed methods study
Background: Opioid substitution therapy (OST) programs involve the dispensing of OST medicines to patients to address their dependence on heroin and/or other opioid substances. OST medicines are subsidised by the Australian government but patients need to pay the dispensing fees. This study explored opinions from OST patients and stakeholders about the potential impact of dispensing fees on compliance and OST program retention. Current and past experiences and the potential impact of OST dispensing fees were evaluated. Methods: Mixed methodology was used to obtain data from OST patients and stakeholders. This involved 1) interviews with OST stakeholders, 2) a focus group of OST patients and 3) surveys of OST patients in Perth, Australia, between June and August 2013.Results: The majority of the eight stakeholders declared cost as the factor mostly impacting on OST compliance. Almost all of the stakeholders commented that there was a positive correlation between time on the OST program and success in terms of relapse. Most stakeholders advocated for OST fees to contribute towards the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Safety Net, and for fee subsidy. Focus group themes supported stakeholder interview findings. A total of 138 surveys were completed. Survey analysis illustrated a strong correlation between patient debt and impacted lifestyle: 82.4% (p < 0.001, Chi-square test) of the 138 survey participants stated that dispensing fees impacted significantly on patients’ finances and lifestyle, specifically those patients with major debt. The cost of dispensing fees was identified by 46.3% (64/138) of survey participants as the biggest impacting factor on patient success. Logistic regression models showed that the cost of dispensing fees was also found to significantly influence both the occurrence of debt (57.7%, p < 0.0001) and lifestyle difficulties (80.0%, p = 0.0004). Conclusion: Findings provided insight into OST patients’ financial difficulties with data suggesting that dispensing fees are likely to have a negative impact on OST patients’ compliance with therapy, retention in the OST program and lifestyle. Government sponsorship of the OST dispensing fees should be considered as sponsorship would potentially increase the retention rates of income-poor OST program recipients
The Starburst in the Central Kiloparsec of Markarian 231
We present VLBA observations at 0.33 and 0.61 GHz, and VLA observations
between 5 and 22 GHz, of subkiloparsec scale radio emission from Mrk 231. In
addition to jet components clearly associated with the AGN, we also find a
smooth extended component of size 100 - 1000 pc most probably related to the
purported massive star forming disk in Mrk 231. The diffuse radio emission from
the disk is found to have a steep spectrum at high frequencies, characteristic
of optically thin synchrotron emission. The required relativistic particle
density in the disk can be produced by a star formation rate of 220 Msolar/yr
in the central kiloparsec. At low frequencies the disk is absorbed, most likely
by ionized gas with an emission measure of 8 x 10^5 pc cm-6. We have also
identified 4 candidate radio supernovae that, if confirmed, represent direct

Obscuration of the Parsec Scale Jets in the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708
We present results of VLA and VLBA observations of the 1.420 GHz neutral
hydrogen absorption associated with the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708
(z=0.101). We find significant structure in the gas on parsec scales. The peak
column density in the HI (N_HI~2.2x10^23 cm^-2 (T_s/8000K)) occurs toward the
center of activity of the source, as does the highest velocity dispersion
(FWHM~350 \kms). In addition, we find that the continuum spectra of the various
radio components associated with these jets strongly indicate free-free
absorption. This effect is particularly pronounced toward the core and inner
components of the receding jet, suggesting the presence of a screen local to
the source, perhaps part of an obscuring torus.Comment: revised version, some text added, 1 figure changed; accepted to

Sensitivity of resolved and parameterized surface drag to changes in resolution and parameterization
The relative contribution of resolved and parameterized surface drag towards balancing the atmospheric angular momentum flux convergence (AMFC), and their sensitivity to horizontal resolution and parameterization, are investigated in an atmospheric model. This sensitivity can be difficult to elucidate in free-running climate models, in which the AMFC varies with changing climatologies and, as a result, the relative contributions of surface terms balancing the AMFC also vary. While the sensitivity question has previously been addressed using short-range forecasts, we demonstrate that a nudging framework is an effective method for constraining the AMFC. The Met Office Unified Model is integrated at three horizontal resolutions ranging from 130 km (N96) to 25 km (N512) while relaxing the model’s wind and temperature fields towards the ERAinterim reanalysis within the altitude regions of maximum AMFC. This method is validated against short range forecasts and good agreement is found. These experiments
are then used to assess the fidelity of the exchange between parameterized and resolved orographic torques with changes in horizontal resolution. Although the parameterized
orographic torque reduces substantially with increasing horizontal resolution, there is little change in resolved orographic torque over 20N to 50N. The tendencies produced
by the nudging routine indicate that the additional drag at lower horizontal resolution is excessive. When parameterized orographic blocking is removed at the coarsest of these resolutions, there is a lack of compensation, and even compensation of the opposite
sense, by the boundary layer and resolved torques which is particularly pronounced over 20N to 50N. This study demonstrates that there is strong sensitivity in the
behaviour of the resolved and parameterized surface drag over this region
The design-by-adaptation approach to universal access: learning from videogame technology
This paper proposes an alternative approach to the design of universally accessible interfaces to that provided by formal design frameworks applied ab initio to the development of new software. This approach, design-byadaptation, involves the transfer of interface technology and/or design principles from one application domain to another, in situations where the recipient domain is similar to the host domain in terms of modelled systems, tasks and users. Using the example of interaction in 3D virtual environments, the paper explores how principles underlying the design of videogame interfaces may be applied to a broad family of visualization and analysis software which handles geographical data (virtual geographic environments, or VGEs). One of the motivations behind the current study is that VGE technology lags some way behind videogame technology in the modelling of 3D environments, and has a less-developed track record in providing the variety of interaction methods needed to undertake varied tasks in 3D virtual worlds by users with varied levels of experience. The current analysis extracted a set of interaction principles from videogames which were used to devise a set of 3D task interfaces that have been implemented in a prototype VGE for formal evaluation
