    Magnetic control of the pair creation in spatially localized supercritical fields

    We examine the impact of a perpendicular magnetic field on the creation mechanism of electron-positron pairs in a supercritical static electric field, where both fields are localized along the direction of the electric field. In the case where the spatial extent of the magnetic field exceeds that of the electric field, quantum field theoretical simulations based on the Dirac equation predict a suppression of pair creation even if the electric field is supercritical. Furthermore, an arbitrarily small magnetic field outside the interaction zone can bring the creation process even to a complete halt, if it is sufficiently extended. The mechanism for this magnetically induced complete shutoff can be associated with a reopening of the mass gap and the emergence of electrically dressed Landau levels

    Thermal conduction of carbon nanotubes using molecular dynamics

    The heat flux autocorrelation functions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different radius and lengths is calculated using equilibrium molecular dynamics. The thermal conductance of CNTs is also calculated using the Green-Kubo relation from the linear response theory. By pointing out the ambiguity in the cross section definition of single wall CNTs, we use the thermal conductance instead of conductivity in calculations and discussions. We find that the thermal conductance of CNTs diverges with the CNT length. After the analysis of vibrational density of states, it can be concluded that more low frequency vibration modes exist in longer CNTs, and they effectively contribute to the divergence of thermal conductance.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    DAMA/LIBRA results and perspectives

    The DAMA/LIBRA experiment, running at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. in Italy, has a sensitive mass of about 250 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl). It is mainly devoted to the investigation of Dark Matter (DM) particles in the Galactic halo by exploiting the model independent DM annual modulation signature. The present DAMA/LIBRA experiment and the former DAMA/NaI one (the first generation experiment having an exposed mass of about 100 kg) have released so far results corresponding to a total exposure of 1.17 ton yr over 13 annual cycles. They provide a model independent evidence of the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo at 8.9 sigma C.L..     A new area-based convexity measure with distance weighted area integration for planar shapes

    In this paper we propose a new area-based convexity measure. We assume that convexity evaluation of an arbitrary planar shape is related to the total influence of dents of the shape, and discover that those attributes of the dents, such as the position, area, and depth with respect to the Geometric Center of Convex Hull (GCCH) of the shape, determine the dent influence. We consider that the convex hull of the shape consists of infinitely small patches, to each of which we assign a weight showing the patch influence. We can simply integrate all the patch weights in any regions within the convex hull to calculate their total influence. We define this operation as the Distance Weighted Area Integration, if the weight is associated with the Euclidean distance from the patch to the GCCH. Our new measure is a distance weighted generalization of the most commonly used convexity measure, making this conventional measure fully replaceable for the first time. Experiments demonstrate advantages of the new convexity measure against the existing ones

    Study of Enhanced MISC-Based Sparse Arrays with High uDOFs and Low Mutual Coupling

    In this letter, inspired by the maximum inter-element spacing (IES) constraint (MISC) criterion, an enhanced MISC-based (EMISC) sparse array (SA) with high uniform degrees-of-freedom (uDOFs) and low mutual-coupling (MC) is proposed, analyzed and discussed in detail. For the EMISC SA, an IES set is first determined by the maximum IES and number of elements. Then, the EMISC SA is composed of seven uniform linear sub-arrays (ULSAs) derived from an IES set. An analysis of the uDOFs and weight function shows that, the proposed EMISC SA outperforms the IMISC SA in terms of uDOF and MC. Simulation results show a significant advantage of the EMISC SA over other existing SAs.Comment: 6 pages 4 figure

A number of these items have already been presented in individual papers.     The DAMA/LIBRA set-up (about 250 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl) sensitive mass) is running at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N.. The first DAMA/LIBRA results confirm the evidence for the presence of a Dark Matter particle component in the galactic halo, as pointed out by the former DAMA/NaI set-up; cumulatively the data support such evidence at 8.2 sigma C.L. and satisfy all the many peculiarities of the Dark Matter annual modulation signature.
