Enhancing surface heat transfer by carbon nanofins: towards an alternative to nanofluids?
Background: Nanofluids are suspensions of nanoparticles and fibers which have recently attracted much attention because of their superior thermal properties. Nevertheless, it was proven that, due to modest dispersion of nanoparticles, such high expectations often remain unmet. In this article, by introducing the notion of nanofin, a possible solution is envisioned, where nanostructures with high aspect-ratio are sparsely attached to a solid surface (to avoid a significant disturbance on the fluid dynamic structures), and act as efficient thermal bridges within the boundary layer. As a result, particles are only needed in a small region of the fluid, while dispersion can be controlled in advance through design and manufacturing processes. Results: Toward the end of implementing the above idea, we focus on single carbon nanotubes to enhance heat transfer between a surface and a fluid in contact with it. First, we investigate the thermal conductivity of the latter nanostructures by means of classical non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Next, thermal conductance at the interface between a single wall carbon nanotube (nanofin) and water molecules is assessed by means of both steady-state and transient numerical experiments. Conclusions: Numerical evidences suggest a pretty favorable thermal boundary conductance (order of 107 W·m-2·K-1) which makes carbon nanotubes potential candidates for constructing nanofinned surface
An Algebraic Pairing Model with Sp(4) Symmetry and its Deformation
A fermion realization of the compact symplectic sp(4) algebra provides a
natural framework for studying isovector pairing correlations in nuclei. While
these correlations manifest themselves most clearly in the binding energies of
0^+ ground states, they also have a large effect on the energies of excited
states, including especially excited 0^+ states. In this article we consider
non-deformed as well as deformed algebraic descriptions of pairing through the
reductions of sp_{(q)}(4) to different realizations of u_{(q)}(2) for single-j
and multi-j orbitals. The model yields a classification scheme for completely
paired 0^{+} states of even-even and odd-odd nuclei in the 1d_{3/2}, 1f_{7/2},
and 1f_{5/2}2p_{1/2}2p_{3/2}1g_{9/2} shells. Phenomenological non-deformed and
deformed isospin-breaking Hamiltonians are expressed in terms of the generators
of the dynamical symmetry groups Sp(4) and Sp_{q}(4). These Hamiltonians are
related to the most general microscopic pairing problem, including isovector
pairing and isoscalar proton-neutron interaction along with non-linear
interaction in the deformed extension. In both the non-deformed and deformed
cases the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are fit to the relevant Coulomb
corrected experimental 0^{+} energies and this, in turn, allows us to estimate
the interaction strength parameters, to investigate isovector-pairing
properties and symmetries breaking, and to predict the corresponding energies.
While the non-deformed theory yields results that are comparable to other
theories for light nuclei, the deformed extension, which takes into account
higher-order interactions between the particles, gives a better fit to the
data. The multi-shell applications of the model provide for reasonable

Electrical properties of a-antimony selenide
This paper reports conduction mechanism in a-\sbse over a wide range of
temperature (238K to 338K) and frequency (5Hz to 100kHz). The d.c. conductivity
measured as a function of temperature shows semiconducting behaviour with
activation energy E= 0.42 eV. Thermally induced changes in the
electrical and dielectric properties of a-\sbse have been examined. The a.c.
conductivity in the material has been explained using modified CBH model. The
band conduction and single polaron hopping is dominant above room temperature.

Rescaling multipartite entanglement measures for mixed states
A relevant problem regarding entanglement measures is the following: Given an
arbitrary mixed state, how does a measure for multipartite entanglement change
if general local operations are applied to the state? This question is
nontrivial as the normalization of the states has to be taken into account.
Here we answer it for pure-state entanglement measures which are invariant
under determinant 1 local operations and homogeneous in the state coefficients,
and their convex-roof extension which quantifies mixed-state entanglement. Our
analysis allows to enlarge the set of mixed states for which these important
measures can be calculated exactly. In particular, our results hint at a
distinguished role of entanglement measures which have homogeneous degree 2 in

Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay in the electroweak chiral gauge extensions
Fundamental mechanisms for Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay in
SU(3)_C x G_W x U(1) models, for electroweak flavor chiral extensions, G_W =
SU(3)_L and SU(4)_L are pointed out. Both kinds of known Majoron emitting
processes, charged Majoron emitting where the massless Nambu-Goldstone boson
itself carries lepton charge, , and the ordinary Majoron emitting where

Is age a prognostic biomarker for survival among women with locally advanced cervical cancer treated with chemoradiation? An NRG Oncology/Gynecologic Oncology Group ancillary data analysis
Objective
To determine the effect of age on completion of and toxicities following treatment of local regionally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) on Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) Phase I–III trials.
Methods
An ancillary data analysis of GOG protocols 113, 120, 165, 219 data was performed. Wilcoxon, Pearson, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for univariate and multivariate analysis. Log rank tests were used to compare survival lengths.
Results
One-thousand-three-hundred-nineteen women were included; 60.7% were Caucasian, 15% were age 60–70 years and an additional 5% were >70; 87% had squamous histology, 55% had stage IIB disease and 34% had IIIB disease. Performance status declined with age (p = 0.006). Histology and tumor stage did not significantly differ., Number of cycles of chemotherapy received, radiation treatment time, nor dose modifications varied with age. Notably, radiation protocol deviations and failure to complete brachytherapy (BT) did increase with age (p = 0.022 and p 50 for all-cause mortality (HR 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01–1.04) was found, but no association between age and disease specific mortality was found.
Conclusion
This represents a large analysis of patients treated for LACC with chemo/radiation, approximately 20% of whom were >60 years of age. Older patients, had higher rates of incomplete brachytherapy which is not explained by collected toxicity data. Age did not adversely impact completion of chemotherapy and radiation or toxicities
Insecticide resistance and the future of malaria control in Zambia.
BACKGROUND: In line with the Global trend to improve malaria control efforts a major campaign of insecticide treated net distribution was initiated in 1999 and indoor residual spraying with DDT or pyrethroids was reintroduced in 2000 in Zambia. In 2006, these efforts were strengthened by the President's Malaria Initiative. This manuscript reports on the monitoring and evaluation of these activities and the potential impact of emerging insecticide resistance on disease transmission. METHODS: Mosquitoes were captured daily through a series of 108 window exit traps located at 18 sentinel sites. Specimens were identified to species and analyzed for sporozoites. Adult Anopheles mosquitoes were collected resting indoors and larva collected in breeding sites were reared to F1 and F0 generations in the lab and tested for insecticide resistance following the standard WHO susceptibility assay protocol. Annual cross sectional household parasite surveys were carried out to monitor the impact of the control programme on prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum in children aged 1 to 14 years. RESULTS: A total of 619 Anopheles gambiae s.l. and 228 Anopheles funestus s.l. were captured from window exit traps throughout the period, of which 203 were An. gambiae malaria vectors and 14 An. funestus s.s.. In 2010 resistance to DDT and the pyrethroids deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin was detected in both An. gambiae s.s. and An. funestus s.s.. No sporozoites were detected in either species. Prevalence of P. falciparum in the sentinel sites remained below 10% throughout the study period. CONCLUSION: Both An. gambiae s.s. and An. funestus s.s. were controlled effectively with the ITN and IRS programme in Zambia, maintaining a reduced disease transmission and burden. However, the discovery of DDT and pyrethroid resistance in the country threatens the sustainability of the vector control programme

Rationale and Design of the SENECA (StEm cell iNjECtion in cAncer survivors) Trial
Objectives
SENECA (StEm cell iNjECtion in cAncer survivors) is a phase I, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the safety and feasibility of delivering allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (allo-MSCs) transendocardially in subjects with anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy (AIC).
Background
AIC is an incurable and often fatal syndrome, with a prognosis worse than that of ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy. Recently, cell therapy with MSCs has emerged as a promising new approach to repair damaged myocardium.
Methods
The study population is 36 cancer survivors with a diagnosis of AIC, left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction ≤40%, and symptoms of heart failure (NYHA class II-III) on optimally-tolerated medical therapy. Subjects must be clinically free of cancer for at least two years with a ≤ 30% estimated five-year risk of recurrence. The first six subjects participated in an open-label, lead-in phase and received 100 million allo-MSCs; the remaining 30 will be randomized 1:1 to receive allo-MSCs or vehicle via 20 transendocardial injections. Efficacy measures (obtained at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months) include MRI evaluation of LV function, LV volumes, fibrosis, and scar burden; assessment of exercise tolerance (six-minute walk test) and quality of life (Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire); clinical outcomes (MACE and cumulative days alive and out of hospital); and biomarkers of heart failure (NT-proBNP).
Conclusions
This is the first clinical trial using direct cardiac injection of cells for the treatment of AIC. If administration of allo-MSCs is found feasible and safe, SENECA will pave the way for larger phase II/III studies with therapeutic efficacy as the primary outcome
