Space Shuttle 2 advanced space transportation system, volume 2
To determine the best configuration from all candidate configurations, it was necessary first to calculate minimum system weights and performance. To optimize the design, it is necessary to vary configuration-specific variables such as total system weight, thrust-to-weight ratios, burn durations, total thrust available, and mass fraction for the system. Optimizing each of these variables at the same time is technically unfeasible and not necessarily mathematically possible. However, discrete sets of data can be generated which will eliminate many candidate configurations. From the most promising remaining designs, a final configuration can be selected. Included are the three most important designs considered: one which closely approximates the design criteria set forth in a Marshall Space Flight Center study of the Shuttle 2; the configuration used in the initial proposal; and the final configuration. A listing by cell of the formulas used to generate the aforementioned data is included for reference
Space Shuttle 2 Advanced Space Transportation System. Volume 1: Executive Summary
An investigation into the feasibility of establishing a second generation space transportation system is summarized. Incorporating successful systems from the Space Shuttle and technological advances made since its conception, the second generation shuttle was designed to be a lower-cost, reliable system which would guarantee access to space well into the next century. A fully reusable, all-liquid propellant booster/orbiter combination using parallel burn was selected as the base configuration. Vehicle characteristics were determined from NASA ground rules and optimization evaluations. The launch profile was constructed from particulars of the vehicle design and known orbital requirements. A stability and control analysis was performed for the landing phase of the orbiter's flight. Finally, a preliminary safety analysis was performed to indicate possible failure modes and consequences
Negative effective permeability and left-handed materials at optical frequencies
We present here the design of nano-inclusions made of properly arranged
collections of plasmonic metallic nano-particles that may exhibit a resonant
magnetic dipole collective response in the visible domain. When such inclusions
are embedded in a host medium, they may provide metamaterials with negative
effective permeability at optical frequencies. We also show how the same
inclusions may provide resonant electric dipole response and, when combining
the two effects at the same frequencies, lefthanded materials with both
negative effective permittivity and permeability may be synthesized in the
optical domain with potential applications for imaging and nano-optics

Trace minerals serve an essential role in regulating reproduction. Free-choice trace mineral supplementation is often provided to grazing beef cattle. An injectable trace-mineral solution used with free-choice trace minerals may be beneficial before breeding to improve mineral status. Therefore, Red Angus-based, May-born heifers were utilized to determine the effects of an injectable trace mineral on reproductive performance. Pregnancy rates did not differ between heifers injected with a trace mineral and heifers that received no injection. Injectable trace mineral at CIDR insertion 33 d before artificial insemination did not influence reproductive performance in heifers with adequate trace mineral status

Quantifying mucosal hemodynamics in a murine model of Ulcerative Colitis with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a gastrointestinal, autoimmune disease that causes ulceration and inflammation of the colon with an incidence 10 out of every 100,000 people in North America and Western Europe. Though the exact etiology is uncertain, a number of studies have shown that inflammatory cells along with environmental factors, genetics, and lifestyle habits can contribute to the sustained inflammatory response. In order to determine the cellular mechanism behind relapse and remission of UC, researchers have frequently employed immunohistochemistry, western blotting and gene sequencing, but these destructive analysis methods require the removal of a sample, necessarily limiting these methods to non-living tissues. There is an emerging interest in using non-invasive techniques to study the in vivo, longitudinal effects of UC on the mucosa in the colon. Here we have developed a mouse model of UC using dextran sulfate sodium and a non-invasive spectroscopy monitoring modality to study the changes in the tissue hemodynamics during active UC
Refraction at Media with Negative Refractive Index
We show that an electromagnetic (EM) wave undergoes negative refraction at
the interface between a positive and negative refractive index material. Finite
difference time domain (FDTD) simulations are used to study the time evolution
of an EM wave as it hits the interface. The wave is trapped temporarily at the
interface and after a long time, the wave front moves eventually in the
negative direction. This explains why causality and speed of light are not
violated in spite of the negative refraction always present in a negative index

Impact of Winter Supplementation of May Calving Cows and Heifer Development System in Two Different Breeding Seasons on Subsequent Growth and Reproduction
In Exp. 1, May-calving cows were utilized to evaluate the effects of winter supplementation on heifer progeny. Cows grazed either dormant upland winter range with or without a protein supplement or grazed dormant meadow with or without a protein supplement. In Exp. 2, replacement heifers from March and May calving herds were offered ad libitum meadow hay and 4 lb/d supplement or grazed meadow and offered 1 lb/d supplement from mid-January to mid-April. Calf weaning BW and ADG from birth to weaning was less for calves from cows grazing winter range with no supplement compared with all other dam treatments. Heifer development system did not impact final pregnancy rates. Therefore, a reduced input winter heifer development system is a viable option in both early and late summer breeding seasons. However, winter supplementation of May-calving dams did influence heifer progeny ADG from birth to weaning
Abnormal phenomena in a one-dimensional periodic structure containing left-handed materials
The explicit dispersion equation for a one-dimensional periodic structure
with alternative layers of left-handed material (LHM) and right-handed material
(RHM) is given and analyzed. Some abnormal phenomena such as spurious modes
with complex frequencies, discrete modes and photon tunnelling modes are
observed in the band structure. The existence of spurious modes with complex
frequencies is a common problem in the calculation of the band structure for
such a photonic crystal. Physical explanation and significance are given for
the discrete modes (with real values of wave number) and photon tunnelling
propagation modes (with imaginary wave numbers in a limited region).Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Effect of Heifer Development System on Reproduction and Subsequent Gain as a Pregnant Heifer
Weaned heifers grazed corn residue, upland range, or were fed 1 of 2 drylot diets differing in energy. Heifer development diets did not impact their resulting AI or final pregnancy rates. Cost per pregnant heifer was similar among treatments. A subset of AI- pregnant heifers was placed in a Calan Broadbent individual feeding system during late gestation. As a pregnant heifer, feed efficiency was not impacted by development system. These results indicate producers may utilize their most readily available and/or cost- effective feed resources with no detriment to pregnancy rates or feed efficiency as first- calf heifers
