    The Abundance Of Boron In Diffuse Interstellar Clouds

    We present a comprehensive survey of boron abundances in diffuse interstellar clouds from observations made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. Our sample of 56 Galactic sight lines is the result of a complete search of archival STIS data for the B II lambda 1362 resonance line, with each detection confirmed by the presence of absorption from O I lambda 1355, Cu II lambda 1358, and Ga II lambda 1414 (when available) at the same velocity. Five previous measurements of interstellar B II from Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph observations are incorporated in our analysis, yielding a combined sample that more than quadruples the number of sight lines with significant boron detections. Our survey also constitutes the first extensive analysis of interstellar gallium from STIS spectra and expands on previously published results for oxygen and copper. The observations probe both high-and low-density diffuse environments, allowing the density-dependent effects of interstellar depletion to be clearly identified in the gas-phase abundance data for each element. In the case of boron, the increase in relative depletion with line-of-sight density amounts to an abundance difference of 0.8 dex between the warm and cold phases of the diffuse interstellar medium. The abundance of boron in warm, low-density gas is found to be B/H = (2.4 +/- 0.6) x 10(-10), which represents a depletion of 60% relative to the meteoritic boron abundance. Beyond the effects of depletion, our survey reveals sight lines with enhanced boron abundances that potentially trace the recent production of B-11, resulting from spallation reactions involving either cosmic rays or neutrinos. Future observations will help to disentangle the relative contributions from the two spallation channels for B-11 synthesis.Robert A.     High-Resolution Measurements of Intersystem Bands of Carbon Monoxide toward X Persei

    In an echelle spectrum of X Per acquired with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph we have identified individual rotational lines of 11 triplet-singlet (intersystem) absorption bands of ^12CO. Four bands provide first detections for interstellar clouds. From a comparison with the zeta Oph sight line we find that X Per is obscured by a higher 12CO column density of 1.4 x 10^16 cm-2. Together with the high spectral resolution of 1.3 km s-1, this allows (i) an improved measurement of previously published f-values for seven bands, and (ii) an extraction of the first astrophysical oscillator strengths for d-X (8-0), (9-0), and (10-0), as well as for e-X (12-0). The ^13CO d-X (12-0) band, previously suspected to exist toward zeta Oph, is now readily resolved and modeled. Our derived intersystem f-values for ^12CO include a few mild (leq 34%) disagreements with recent predictions from a perturbation analysis calculated for the interstellar excitation temperature. Overall, the comparison confirms the superiority of employing multiple singlet levels in the calculations of mixing coefficients over previous single-level predictions.Comment: 11 pages (incl. 1 figure).     Boron Abundances in Diffuse Interstellar Clouds

    We present a comprehensive survey of B abundances in diffuse interstellar clouds from HST/STIS observations along 56 Galactic sight lines. Our sample is the result of a complete search of archival STIS data for the B II resonance line at 1362 angstroms, with each detection confirmed by the presence of absorption from other dominant ions at the same velocity. The data probe a range of astrophysical environments including both high-density regions of massive star formation as well as low-density paths through the Galactic halo, allowing us to clearly define the trend of B depletion onto interstellar grains as a function of gas density. Many extended sight lines exhibit complex absorption profiles that trace both local gas and gas associated with either the Sagittarius-Carina or Perseus spiral arm. Our analysis indicates a higher B/O ratio in the inner Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm than in the vicinity of the Sun, which may suggest that B production in the current epoch is dominated by a secondary process. The average gas-phase B abundance in the warm diffuse ISM is consistent with the abundances determined for a variety of Galactic disk stars, but is depleted by 60 percent relative to the solar system value. Our survey also reveals sight lines with enhanced B abundances that potentially trace recent production of B-11 either by cosmic-ray or neutrino-induced spallation.     A single female specimen of Ochlerotatus japonicus (Theobald)(formerly Aedes japonicus), the Asian bush mosquito, was captured in St. Joseph County, IN on 29 July 2004. This is the first report of that species in northern Indiana. Additional specimens were subsequently collected, indicating probable establishment throughout the county

    Population Dynamics and Community Composition of Ammonia Oxidizers in Salt Marshes after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

    The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had significant effects on microbial communities in the Gulf, but impacts on nitrifying communities in adjacent salt marshes have not been investigated. We studied persistent effects of oil on ammonia-oxidizing archaeal (AOA) and bacterial (AOB) communities and their relationship to nitrification rates and soil properties in Louisiana marshes impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Soils were collected at oiled and unoiled sites from Louisiana coastal marshes in July 2012, 2 years after the spill, and analyzed for community differences based on ammonia monooxygenase genes (amoA). Terminal Restriction Fragment Polymorphism and DNA sequence analyses revealed significantly different AOA and AOB communities between the three regions, but few differences were found between oiled and unoiled sites. Community composition of nitrifiers was best explained by differences in soil moisture and nitrogen content. Despite the lack of significant oil effects on overall community composition, we identified differences in correlations of individual populations with potential nitrification rates between oiled and unoiled sites that help explain previously published correlation patterns. Our results suggest that exposure to oil, even 2 years post-spill, led to subtle changes in population dynamics. How, or if, these changes may impact ecosystem function in the marshes, however, remains uncertain

    Interstellar CN and CH+ in Diffuse Molecular Clouds: 12C/13C Ratios and CN Excitation

    We present very high signal-to-noise ratio absorption-line observations of CN and CH+ along 13 lines of sight through diffuse molecular clouds. The data are examined to extract precise isotopologic ratios of 12CN/13CN and 12CH+/13CH+ in order to assess predictions of diffuse cloud chemistry. Our results on 12CH+/13CH+ confirm that this ratio does not deviate from the ambient 12C/13C ratio in local interstellar clouds, as expected if the formation of CH+ involves nonthermal processes. We find that 12CN/13CN, however, can be significantly fractionated away from the ambient value. The dispersion in our sample of 12CN/13CN ratios is similar to that found in recent surveys of 12CO/13CO. For sight lines where both ratios have been determined, the 12CN/13CN ratios are generally fractionated in the opposite sense compared to 12CO/13CO. Chemical fractionation in CO results from competition between selective photodissociation and isotopic charge exchange. An inverse relationship between 12CN/13CN and 12CO/13CO follows from the coexistence of CN and CO in diffuse cloud cores. However, an isotopic charge exchange reaction with CN may mitigate the enhancements in 12CN/13CN for lines of sight with low 12CO/13CO ratios. For two sight lines with high values of 12CO/13CO, our results indicate that about 50 percent of the carbon is locked up in CO, which is consistent with the notion that these sight lines probe molecular cloud envelopes where the transition from C+ to CO is expected to occur. An analysis of CN rotational excitation yields a weighted mean value for T_01(12CN) of 2.754 +/- 0.002 K, which implies an excess over the temperature of the cosmic microwave background of only 29 +/- 3 mK. This modest excess eliminates the need for a local excitation mechanism beyond electron and neutral collisions.     Mutual Event Observations of Io's Sodium Corona

    We have measured the column density profile of Io's sodium corona using 10 mutual eclipses between the Galilean satellites. This approach circumvents the problem of spatially resolving Io's corona directly from Io's bright continuum in the presence of atmospheric seeing and telescopic scattering. The primary goal is to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of Io's corona. Spectra from the Keck Observatory and McDonald Observatory from 1997 reveal a corona that is only approximately spherically symmetric around Io. Comparing the globally averaged radial sodium column density profile in the corona with profiles measured in 1991 and 1985, we find that there has been no significant variation. However, there appears to be a previously undetected asymmetry: the corona above Io's sub-Jupiter hemisphere is consistently more dense than above the anti-Jupiter hemisphere

    Loopy Cuts: Surface-Field Aware Block Decomposition for Hex-Meshing.

    We present a new fully automatic block-decomposition hexahedral meshing algorithm capable of producing high quality meshes that strictly preserve feature curve networks on the input surface and align with an input surface cross-field. We produce all-hex meshes on the vast majority of inputs, and introduce localized non-hex elements only when the surface feature network necessitates those. The input to our framework is a closed surface with a collection of geometric or user-demarcated feature curves and a feature-aligned surface cross-field. Its output is a compact set of blocks whose edges interpolate these features and are loosely aligned with this cross-field. We obtain this block decomposition by cutting the input model using a collection of simple cutting surfaces bounded by closed surface loops. The set of cutting loops spans the input feature curves, ensuring feature preservation, and is obtained using a field-space sampling process. The computed loops are uniformly distributed across the surface, cross orthogonally, and are loosely aligned with the cross-field directions, inducing the desired block decomposition. We validate our method by applying it to a large range of complex inputs and comparing our results to those produced by state-of-the-art alternatives. Contrary to prior approaches, our framework consistently produces high-quality field aligned meshes while strictly preserving geometric or user-specified surface features

    Restrictive Type of Replication of Ovine/Caprine Lentiviruses in Ovine Fibroblast Cell Cultures

    AbstractCaprine arthritis–encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a natural lentivirus pathogen of goats. CAEV, like all members of the ovine/caprine lentivirus family, has anin vivotropism for cells of the monocyte/macrophage cell lineage and activation of viral gene expression is observed only following differentiation of monocytes to macrophages. In addition to cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage, CAEV and the closely related maedi visna virus of sheep (MVV) can also replicate productively in fibro-epithelial cells derived from synovial membrane of goats (GSM). However, these viruses varied greatly in their ability to replicate in fibroblasts. We studied the biological and biochemical properties of CAEV and maedi-visna virus (MVV) of sheep following inoculation into the three ovine/caprine cell types. Our data showed no substantial differences in virus titers, viral protein biosynthesis, or processing of the viral proteins between CAEV and MVV following inoculation into primary macrophages and GSM cells. However, unlike MVV, CAEV failed to replicate productively in ovine fibroblasts (sheep choroid plexus cells). This correlated with a specific but abnormal proteolytic cleavage of the envelope glycoprotein of the virus.     Oscillator strengths for transitions to Rydberg levels in 12C16O^{12}C^{16}O, 13C16O^{13}C^{16}O and 13C18O^{13}C^{18}O between 967 and 972 A

    Absorption oscillator strengths have been determined from high-resolution spectra in the 967-972 \AA region of three CO isotopomers for transitions to the Rydberg levels 4{\it pπ\pi}(0), 3{\it dπ\pi}(1) and 4{\it pσ\sigma}(0), as well as to the mixed {\it E(6)} level recently characterized by Eidelsberg et al. (2004). Synchrotron radiation from the Super-ACO electron storage ring at Orsay (LURE) was used as a light source. Oscillator strengths were extracted from the recorded spectra by least-squares fitting of the experimental profiles with synthetic spectra taking into account the homogeneous and heterogeneous interactions of the four levels. Column densities were derived from fits to the 3{\it pπ\pi}(0) absorption band whose oscillator strength is well established. These are the first reported measurements for 13^{13}C18^{18}O. For 12^{12}C16^{16}O, our results are consistent with the larger values obtained in the most recent laboratory and astronomical studies.Comment: 9 pages 7 figures 3 tables.
