Preparation and Properties of In-Situ Devices Using the SALD and SALDVI Techniques
One of the many advantages of Selective Area Laser Deposition (SALD) and Selective
Area Laser Deposition Vapor Infiltration (SALDVI) is that they can be used to embed in-situ
micro-sensors within macro-components. A single-point SiC/C thermocouple sensor embedded
within a SiC macro-component and electrically insulated with silicon nitride layers has been
demonstrated. In many applications, multi-point sensors within a single component are needed,
e.g., in monitoring the temperature gradient and distribution at different positions. In this paper,
multi-point thermocouple devices are demonstrated. The macro-component is a SiC bulk shape
made by infiltrating vapor deposited silicon carbide into a silicon carbide powder bed using the
SALDVI technique. Multiple SiC/C thermocouples are embedded in-situ in the SiC bulk shape
using the SALD technique. The transient and steady state responses ofthe embedded
thermocouples are compared to reference thermocouples probing the surfaces of the bulk shape.Mechanical Engineerin

An Examination of the Volitional Stages in Consumer Decisions to Avoid Sweatshop Clothing
While much research in ethical consumption has focused on contexts such as food, this research explores ethical consumer decision-making in the context of intention to avoid sweatshop clothing where consumer concern has increased but response from the market remains limited. This research seeks to deepen the theory of planned behaviour with respect to the volitional stages underlying behaviour. The findings of the research support a modified theory of planned behaviour model and also reveal volitional stages from intention to trying and plan which reveal the stages of consumer decision-making to avoid sweatshop clothing. Implications for consumer decision-making are discussed

The findings of the research, based on 794 consumers, are novel and support an enriched framework which reveals that the role of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control are mediated by desire, intention and plan. Experimental evaluation of shockless supercritical airfoils in cascade
Surface Mach number distributions, total pressure loss coefficients, and schlieren images of the flow are presented over a range of inlet Mach numbers and air angles. Several different trailing edge geometries were tested. At design conditions a leading edge separation bubble was observed resulting in higher losses than anticipated. The minimum losses were obtained at a negative incidence condition in which the flow was accelerating over most of the supercritical region. Relatively minor differences in losses were measured with the different trailing edge geometries studied
Distributed lag models for hydrological data
The distributed lag model (DLM), used most prominently in air pollution studies, finds application
wherever the effect of a covariate is delayed and distributed through time. We explore the use of modified formulations
of DLMs to provide flexible varying-coeficient models with smoothness constraints, applicable in any setting in which
lagged covariates are regressed on a time-dependent response. The models are applied to simulated flow and rainfall
data and to flow data from a Scottish mountain river, with particular emphasis on approximating the relationship
between environmental covariates and flow regimes in order to detect the influence of unobserved processes. It was
found that under certain rainfall conditions some of the variability in the influence of rainfall on flow arises through
a complex interaction between antecedent ground wetness and the time-delay in rainfall. The models are able to
identify subtle changes in rainfall response, particularly in the location of peak influence in the lag structure and offer
a computationally attractive approach for fitting DLMs

Swelling and shrinking kinetics of a lamellar gel phase
We investigate the swelling and shrinking of L_beta lamellar gel phases
composed of surfactant and fatty alcohol after contact with aqueous
poly(ethylene-glycol) solutions. The height change is
diffusion-like with a swelling coefficient, S: . On
increasing polymer concentration we observe sequentially slower swelling,
absence of swelling, and finally shrinking of the lamellar phase. This behavior
is summarized in a non-equilibrium diagram and the composition dependence of S
quantitatively described by a generic model. We find a diffusion coefficient,

Selection Effects, Biases, and Constraints in the Calan/Tololo Supernova Survey
We use Monte Carlo simulations of the Calan/Tololo photographic supernova
survey to show that a simple model of the survey's selection effects accounts
for the observed distributions of recession velocity, apparent magnitude,
angular offset, and projected radial distance between the supernova and the
host galaxy nucleus for this sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The model
includes biases due to the flux-limited nature of the survey, the different
light curve morphologies displayed by different SNe Ia, and the difficulty of
finding events projected near the central regions of the host galaxies. From
these simulations we estimate the bias in the zero-point and slope of the
absolute magnitude-decline rate relation used in SNe Ia distance measurements.
For an assumed intrinsic scatter of 0.15 mag about this relation, these
selection effects decrease the zero-point by 0.04 mag. The slope of the
relation is not significantly biased. We conclude that despite selection
effects in the survey, the shape and zero-point of the relation determined from
the Calan/Tololo sample are quite reliable. We estimate the degree of
incompleteness of the survey as a function of decline rate and estimate a
corrected luminosity function for SNe Ia in which the frequency of SNe appears
to increase with decline rate (the fainter SNe are more common). Finally, we
compute the integrated detection efficiency of the survey in order to infer the
rate of SNe Ia from the 31 events found. For a value of Ho=65 km/sec/Mpc we
obtain a SN Ia rate of 0.21(+0.30)(-0.13) SNu. This is in good agreement with
