The objectives of the Autogenic Feedback Training (AFT) are to: determine if preflight AFT is an effective treatment for space adaptation syndrome (SAS); determine if preflight improvements in motion sickness tolerance can be used to predict crewmembers' success in controlling symptoms in flight; and identify differences and similarities between the physiological data from preflight motion sickness tests and data collected during symptom episodes in space. The goal is to test the AFT on 8 trained and 8 control subjects. At present 2 trained and 2 contol subjects were tested. The testing will continue until the experimental goal of testing 16 individual is reached
Identification of a non-mammalian leptin-like gene:characterization and expression in the tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)
Leptin is well established as a multifunctional cytokine in mammals. However, little is known about the evolution of the leptin gene in other vertebrates. A recently published set of ESTs from the tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) contains a sequence sharing 56% nucleotide sequence identity with the human leptin cDNA. To confirm that the EST is naturally expressed in the salamander, a 409 bp cDNA was amplified by RT-PCR of salamander testis and stomach mRNAs. The coding sequence of the cDNA is predicted to encode 169 amino acids, and the mature peptide to consist of 146 residues, as in mammals. Although the overall amino acid identity with mammalian leptins is only 29%, the salamander and mammalian peptides share common structural features. An intron was identified between coding exons providing evidence that the sequence is present in the salamander genome. Phylogenetic analysis showed a rate of molecular divergence consistent with the accepted view of vertebrate evolution. The pattern of tissue expression of the leptin-like cDNA differed between metamorphosed adult individuals of different sizes suggesting possible developmental regulation. Expression was most prominent in the skin and testis, but was also detected in tissues in which leptin mRNA is present in mammals, including the fat body, stomach, and muscle. The characterization of a salamander leptin-like gene provides a basis for understanding how the structure and functions of leptin have altered during the evolution of tetrapod vertebrates

The effect of competition on the control of invading plant pathogens
1. New invading pathogen strains must compete with endemic pathogen strains to emerge and spread. As disease control measures are often non-specific, i.e. they do not distinguish between strains, applying control not only affects the invading pathogen strain but the endemic as well. We hypothesise that the control of the invasive strain could be compromised due to the non-specific nature of the control.
2. A spatially-explicit model, describing the East African cassava mosaic virus-Uganda strain (EACMV-UG) outbreak, is used to evaluate methods of controlling both disease incidence and spread of invading pathogen strains in pathosystems with and without an endemic pathogen strain present.
3. We find that while many newly introduced or intensified control measures (such as resistant cultivars or roguing) decrease the expected incidence, they have the unintended consequence of increasing, or at least not reducing, the speed with which the invasive pathogen spreads geographically. We identify which controls cause this effect and methods in which these controls may be applied to prevent it.
4. We found that the spatial spread of the invading strain is chiefly governed by the incidence at the wave front. Control can therefore be applied, or intensified, once the wave front has passed without increasing the pathogen’s rate of spread.
5. When trade of planting material occurs, it is possible that the planting material is already infected. The only forms of control in this study that reduces the speed of geographic spread, regardless of the presence of an endemic strain, are those that reduce the amount of trade and the distance over which trade takes place.
6. Synthesis and applications. Imposing trade restrictions before the epidemic has reached a given area and increasing other control methods only once the wave front has passed is the most effective way of both slowing down spread and controlling incidence when the presence of an endemic strain is unknow
Early Mesozoic Paleotectonic-Paleogeographic Reconstruction of Southern Sierra Nevada Region
A paleotectonic-paleogeographic reconstruction was
based on structural, petrologic, and geochronologic
studies of pre-Sierra Nevada batholith framework rocks
exposed between the San Joaquin River and the Garlock
fault. Most available fossil data from roof pendants
of this region indicate Late Triassic to Early Jurassic
ages. An additional fossil locality from the
western wall rocks yields a Late Permian Tethyan fauna.
This is a maximum age for the enclosing rocks, for
the fossils are in a limestone olistolith. As yet there is no
sign of Paleozoic strata in the region except perhaps
along the eastern Sierran crest in small metamorphic
septa, and in the western foothills where ophiolitic rocks
are present
