    Leadership quality and follower affect - A study of U.S. presidential candidates: Working paper series--07-02

    Using data from the seven most recent US presidential elections, two related analyses are conducted. The first presents an analysis of variance comparing Democratic and Republican Party candidates who were successful in securing votes to those who were unsuccessful in securing votes, using follower perceptions of candidate intelligence, candidate's degree of charisma, and follower feelings of positive and negative affect toward these candidates as the units for analysis. Here, perceived intelligence, feelings of pride and hope, as well as feelings of fear and anger, were found to be statistically different between the two groups. Specifically, candidates perceived to be higher in intelligence, who generated stronger feelings of pride and hope, and weaker feelings of fear and anger were more likely to receive voting support from their followers. The second analysis presents a regression model using follower assessments of candidates' leadership quality as dependent upon certain leader perceptual traits, including follower assessments of candidate intelligence and inspirational qualities, as well as follower affective responses (in terms of feelings of pride, hope, fear and anger) toward all candidates. Here, candidates perceived to be higher in intelligence, perceived to possess stronger degrees of inspirational quality, and who were judged more "likeable" in terms of generating stronger degrees of positive follower affect and lower degrees of negative follower affect are considered better quality leaders

    Wake structure and kinematics in two insectivorous bats

    We compare kinematics and wake structure over a range of flight speeds (4.0–8.2 m s(−1)) for two bats that pursue insect prey aerially, Tadarida brasiliensis and Myotis velifer. Body mass and wingspan are similar in these species, but M. velifer has broader wings and lower wing loading. By using high-speed videography and particle image velocimetry of steady flight in a wind tunnel, we show that three-dimensional kinematics and wake structure are similar in the two species at the higher speeds studied, but differ at lower speeds. At lower speeds, the two species show significant differences in mean angle of attack, body–wingtip distance and sweep angle. The distinct body vortex seen at low speed in T. brasiliensis and other bats studied to date is considerably weaker or absent in M. velifer. We suggest that this could be influenced by morphology: (i) the narrower thorax in this species probably reduces the body-induced discontinuity in circulation between the two wings and (ii) the wing loading is lower, hence the lift coefficient required for weight support is lower. As a result, in M. velifer, there may be a decreased disruption in the lift generation between the body and the wing, and the strength of the characteristic root vortex is greatly diminished, both suggesting increased flight efficiency.     County-Level Trends and Potential Disparities in the Suicide Rates in Virginia, 2020 – 2022

    Abstract Objectives This study aims to investigate the influence of social determinants of health (SDH) on suicide patterns in the state of Virginia. Methods A secondary statistical analysis was conducted using publicly accessible data from the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps database for Virginia. Data from 2020 to 2022 were analyzed, focusing on age-adjusted suicide rates and SDH factors, including % rural, mental health provider rate, median household income, high school completion, and unemployment rates. Multiple regression analysis and visualizations were employed for data interpretation. Results The analysis revealed that SDH factors significantly predicted suicide rates across the study period. Median household income consistently emerged as a strong predictor of suicide in 2021 and 2022, indicating a decrease in suicide risk with higher income levels. High-risk areas, especially in rural and suburban counties, were noticed, with Southern counties having a slightly higher burden of suicide rates. Conclusion This study shows that SDH impacts suicide rates in Virginia, and there is a need for tailored interventions for high-risk areas. Economic stability and location matter. Addressing SDH, enhancing mental health access, and promoting community well-being is vital in suicide prevention.     Pan-genomic perspective on the evolution of the Staphylococcus aureus USA300 epidemic.

    Staphylococcus aureus USA300 represents the dominant community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus lineage in the USA, where it is a major cause of skin and soft tissue infections. Previous comparative genomic studies have described the population structure and evolution of USA300 based on geographically restricted isolate collections. Here, we investigated the USA300 population by sequencing genomes of a geographically distributed panel of 191 clinical S. aureus isolates belonging to clonal complex 8 (CC8), derived from the Tigecycline Evaluation and Surveillance Trial program. Isolates were collected at 12 healthcare centres across nine USA states in 2004, 2009 or 2010. Reconstruction of evolutionary relationships revealed that CC8 was dominated by USA300 isolates (154/191, 81 %), which were heterogeneous and demonstrated limited phylogeographic clustering. Analysis of the USA300 core genomes revealed an increase in median pairwise SNP distance from 62 to 98 between 2004 and 2010, with a stable pattern of above average dN/dS ratios. The phylogeny of the USA300 population indicated that early diversification events led to the formation of nested clades, which arose through cumulative acquisition of predominantly non-synonymous SNPs in various coding sequences. The accessory genome of USA300 was largely homogenous and consisted of elements previously associated with this lineage. We observed an emergence of SCCmec negative and ACME negative USA300 isolates amongst more recent samples, and an increase in the prevalence of ϕSa5 prophage. Together, the analysed S. aureus USA300 collection revealed an evolving pan-genome through increased core genome heterogeneity and temporal variation in the frequency of certain accessory elements

    The beginning of time? Evidence for catastrophic drought in Baringo in the early nineteenth century

    New developments in the collection of palaeo-data over the past two decades have transformed our understanding of climate and environmental history in eastern Africa. This article utilises instrumental and proxy evidence of historical lake-level fluctuations from Baringo and Bogoria, along with other Rift Valley lakes, to document the timing and magnitude of hydroclimate variability at decadal to century time scales since 1750. These data allow us to construct a record of past climate variation not only for the Baringo basin proper, but also across a sizable portion of central and northern Kenya. This record is then set alongside historical evidence, from oral histories gathered amongst the peoples of northern Kenya and the Rift Valley and from contemporary observations recorded by travellers through the region, to offer a reinterpretation of human activity and its relationship to environmental history in the nineteenth century. The results reveal strong evidence of a catastrophic drought in the early nineteenth century, the effects of which radically alters our historical understanding of the character of settlement, mobility and identity within the Baringo–Bogoria basin

    Healthcare outcomes in undocumented immigrants undergoing two emergency dialysis approaches

    BACKGROUND: Current estimates suggest 6,500 undocumented end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients in the United States are ineligible for scheduled hemodialysis and require emergent dialysis. In order to remain in compliance with Emergency Medicaid, an academic health center altered its emergency dialysis criteria from those emphasizing interdialytic interval to a set emphasizing numerical thresholds. We report the impact of this administrative change on the biochemical parameters, utilization, and adverse outcomes in an undocumented patient cohort. METHODS: This retrospective case series examines 19 undocumented ESRD patients during a 6-month transition divided into three 2-month periods (P1, P2, P3). In P1, patients received emergent dialysis based on interdialytic interval and clinical judgment. In P2 (early transition) and P3 (equilibrium), patients were dialyzed according to strict numerical criteria coupled with clinical judgment. RESULTS: Emergent criteria-based dialysis (P2 and P3) was associated with increased potassium, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and acidosis as compared to P1 (p < 0.05). Overnight hospitalizations were more common in P2 and P3 (p < 0.05). More frequent adverse events were noted in P2 as compared to P1 and P3, with an odds ratio (OR) for the composite endpoint (intubation, bacteremia, myocardial infarction, intensive care unit admission) of 48 (5.9 - 391.2) and 16.5 (2.5 - 108.6), respectively. Per-patient reimbursement-to-cost ratios increased during criteria-based dialysis periods (P1: 1.49, P2: 2.3, P3: 2.49). DISCUSSION: Strict adherence to criteria-based dialysis models increases biochemical abnormalities while improving Medicaid reimbursement for undocumented immigrants. Alternatives to emergent dialysis are required which minimize cost, while maintaining dignity, safety, and quality of life.
