    Get PDF
The concept of work in Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) specifically in Songkhla province of Thailand is highlighted in this paper. The study assumed that the meaning of work in NGOs is different from other types of organizations such as business and governmental organizations.NGO operations are seen to be different in terms of their goals when compared to those organizations. Even though research on work had been widely conducted in the business as well as the governmental sectors worldwide, few studies on this issue had been done in the NGO or non-profit sector. The concept of work in NGOs needs to be explored further in order for interested parties to get a true understanding of the nature of work in NGO sector. The research questions posed in this paper relate to how and why the work in NGOs influences the NGO professionals. The objective of this paper is to present some findings based on an in-depth study on the meaning of work in NGOs.This study consists of two core aspects of work: subjective and objective aspects. The respondents in this paper were 16 professionals (i.e. university graduates) selected from five local NGOs in Songkhla province of Thailand. This study used a mixed method within qualitative approach comprising in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and secondary documents. This study showed that the NGO professionals had given high values on the subjective aspects of work because they were seeking fulfillment from work, while the objective aspects of work were seen to be less important to them

Magnetoresistance studies of metallic granular and ceramic thin films for microsensor applications

    Get PDF
Thin films of granular metal and manganites ceramic were fabricated using RF magnetron sputtering and pulsed laser deposition techniques. The GMR effect is highly influenced by the shape, size and distribution of the magnetic entities. The highest GMR value of 7.6% for Ag87.0Fe9.5Co3.5 granular film measured at 1 Tesla at room temperature had been obtained. In the polycrystalline manganites system, low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) had been observed due to the grain boundaries. LFMR of 4.3% and 6.2% measured at 0.1 Tesla at room temperature have been observed for both La-Sr-Mn-O and La-Ba-Mn-O samples. For the La-Sr-Mn-O film, LFMR ratio of 4.5% has been observed. This value meets the requirement as sensor element and it is currently used in many applications such as head sensing in hard disk

Prognostic Biomarkers in Individuals with Prevalent Coronary Heart Disease

    Get PDF
Coronary disease is the leading killer of individuals worldwide and a leading cause of healthcare expenditure. On a global scale, ischemic heart disease kills over 6 million individuals each year and is projected by the World Health Organization to be the greatest single-disease cause of death worldwide by an increasing margin into 2030. Nearly 17 million Americans (7.6% of the population) have prevalent coronary heart disease, 8 million of whom have had a prior myocardial infarction. It is estimated that in 2009, 550,000 will die from coronary heart disease in the United States and that the direct and indirect costs from treating coronary heart disease will exceed $165 billion. Although patients with known coronary artery disease are among the highest risk patients for future cardiac events, not all patients with coronary disease will have an ischemic event (first or recurrent). Determining which of these patients will have an ischemic event is critical to the concept of personalized cardiovascular care. Increasingly, biomarkers that can be readily assayed from blood or other body fluids will be critical to risk stratification and effective application of secondary prevention strategies, just as they have played an increasingly prominent role in risk stratification of acute coronary syndrome patients.</jats:p

Food Safety and Hygiene Practice among Hotel in Malaysia: Qualitative Approach

    Get PDF
This study examines the effectiveness of food safety and hygiene practice (FSHP) among restaurants in a selected Malaysian hotel and impact of FSHP toward culinary intern. It is essential to examine effectiveness FSHP among the hotel restaurants and its impact on culinary intern towards producing competent food handler. Using qualitative method, five (5) of culinary intern were interviewed. The data were then transcribing and analyzed using Atlas.ti software. Finding of a current study confirming the effectiveness FSHP in a hotel restaurant in Malaysia depends on the type of hotel, star rating, and location.© 2016. The Authors. The use of medicinal plants in health care practices by Rohingya refugees in a degraded forest and conservation area of Bangladesh

    Get PDF
People in developing countries traditionally rely on plants for their primary healthcare. This dependence is relatively higher in forests in remote areas due to the lack of access to modern health facilities and easy availability of the plant products. We carried out an ethno-medicinal survey in Teknaf Game Reserve (TGR), a heavily degraded forest and conservation area in southern Bangladesh, to explore the diversity of plants used by Rohingya refugees for treating various ailments. The study also documented the traditional utilization, collection and perceptions of medicinal plants by the Rohingyas residing on the edges of this conservation area. We collected primary information through direct observation and by interviewing older respondents using a semi-structured questionnaire. A total of 34 plant species in 28 families were frequently used by the Rohingyas to treat 45 ailments, ranging from simple headaches to highly complex eye and heart diseases. For medicinal preparations and treating various ailments, aboveground plant parts were used more than belowground parts. The collection of medicinal plants was mostly from the TGR. © 2009 Taylor & Francis

This demonstration illustrates how the water cycle helps to purify water. Students are introduced to the key terms, which are evaporation and condensation. They discover that evaporation is defined as the process through which a liquid becomes a vapor, while condensation is simply the reverse. Students also learn that in the case of water, the main mechanisms for evaporation and condensation are heating and cooling, respectively. Isu sosioemosi dalam kalangan pelajar sekolah rendah di negeri Sabah (socioemotional issues among primary school students in Sabah)

    Get PDF
This study aims to identify socio-emotional issues that often exist among primary school students, especially in the state of Sabah. The respondents involved were a total of 580 people consisting of teachers in several schools from all over Sabah. Respondents as class teachers are required to evaluate and identify socio-emotional issues that often occur among students based on the questionnaire provided. After analysis, the results showed that the majority of 59.8% or 347 respondents have chosen the answer that shows that various socio-emotional issues exist simultaneously at one time. The issues identified have involved more than one pair of issues for a class that has been assessed by the respondents. Next, 16.9% of respondents chose the issue of “emotional behavior disorder”, 8.8% of respondents chose the issue of “changes in the family (divorce, separation)”, 6.2% chose the answer of “being alone with peers”, and 4% chose the issue of “bullying”. The issue of "autism" was realized by 1% of respondents, while 0.7% reported that there was an issue of "death among family members" of their students which caused the socio-emotional level of the students involved. The remaining 2.6% of respondents were aware that all the issues suggested in the answers had been experienced by their students. It is hoped that this study can be used as a guide to understanding more specifically the conflicts that are often experienced by children who are in early school life

This exploratory study contributes to the conceptual and empirical understanding about the nature of Green Human Resource Management (HRM) in multinational companies in Malaysia, an under researched area in the field. The required data for this study were collected using semi-structured interviews with head of HR in four multinational companies. The results revealed that most of the investigated companies place a very high importance on Green HRM reflecting on five concepts – Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Electronic HRM (E-HRM), Work-life Balance (WLB), Green Policies and Extra Care Program.Towards the end of the interview, the informants realized that HR practices are classified as Green HRM.The approach of this investigation recognizes that ‘Green HRM’ is a new term in this field
