Race and School Quality Since Brown vs. Board of Education
This paper presents evidence on the quality of schooling by race and ethnic origin in the United States. Although substantial racial segregation across schools exists, the average pupil-teacher ratio is approximately the same for black and white students. Hispanic students, however, on average have 10 percent more students per teacher. Relative to whites, blacks and Hispanics are less likely to use computers at school and at work. The implications of these differences in school quality for labor market outcomes are examined. We conclude by examining reasons for the increase in the black-white earnings gap since the mid-1970s.
Fault Slip and Exhumation History of the Willard Thrust Sheet, Sevier Fold‐Thrust Belt, Utah: Relations to Wedge Propagation, Hinterland Uplift, and Foreland Basin Sedimentation
Zircon (U‐Th)/He (ZHe) and zircon fission track thermochronometric data for 47 samples spanning the areally extensive Willard thrust sheet within the western part of the Sevier fold‐thrust belt record enhanced cooling and exhumation during major thrust slip spanning approximately 125–90 Ma. ZHe and zircon fission track age‐paleodepth patterns along structural transects and age‐distance relations along stratigraphic‐parallel traverses, combined with thermo‐kinematic modeling, constrain the fault slip history, with estimated slip rates of ~1 km/Myr from 125 to 105 Ma, increasing to ~3 km/Myr from 105 to 92 Ma, and then decreasing as major slip was transferred onto eastern thrusts. Exhumation was concentrated during motion up thrust ramps with estimated erosion rates of ~0.1 to 0.3 km/Myr. Local cooling ages of approximately 160–150 Ma may record a period of regional erosion, or alternatively an early phase of limited... (see full abstract in article)
Juror Judgments about Liability and Damages: Sources of Viriability and Ways to Increase Consistency
The Carina Nebula and Gum 31 molecular complex: II. The distribution of the atomic gas revealed in unprecedented detail
We report high spatial resolution observations of the HI 21cm line in the
Carina Nebula and the Gum 31 region obtained with the Australia Telescope
Compact Array. The observations covered 12 deg centred on , achieving an angular resolution of 35
arcseconds. The HI map revealed complex filamentary structures across a wide
range of velocities. Several "bubbles" are clearly identified in the Carina
Nebula Complex, produced by the impact of the massive star clusters located in
this region. An HI absorption profile obtained towards the strong extragalactic
radio source PMN J1032--5917 showed the distribution of the cold component of
the atomic gas along the Galactic disk, with the Sagittarius-Carina and Perseus
spiral arms clearly distinguishable. Preliminary calculations of the optical
depth and spin temperatures of the cold atomic gas show that the HI line is
opaque ( 2) at several velocities in the Sagittarius-Carina
spiral arm. The spin temperature is K in the regions with the highest
optical depth, although this value might be lower for the saturated components.
The atomic mass budget of Gum 31 is of the total gas mass. HI self
absorption features have molecular counterparts and good spatial correlation
with the regions of cold dust as traced by the infrared maps. We suggest that
in Gum 31 regions of cold temperature and high density are where the atomic to
molecular gas phase transition is likely to be occurring.Comment: 20 pages, 1 table, 16 Figures, Accepted for Publication in the

Morphine for elective endotracheal intubation in neonates: a randomized trial [ISRCTN43546373]
BACKGROUND: Elective endotracheal intubations are still commonly performed without premedication in many institutions. The hypothesis tested in this study was that morphine given prior to elective intubations in neonates would decrease fluctuations in vital signs, shorten the duration of intubation and reduce the number of attempts. METHODS: From December 1999 to September 2000, infants of all gestations admitted to a level III neonatal intensive care unit and requiring an elective endotracheal intubation were randomly assigned to receive morphine 0.2 mg/kg IV or placebo 5 minutes before intubation. Duration of severe hypoxemia (HR< 90/min and Sp0(2)<85%), duration of procedure, duration of hypoxemia (Sp0(2)<85%), number of attempts and change in mean blood pressure were compared between groups. RESULTS: 34 infants (median 989 g and 28 weeks gestation) were included. The duration of severe hypoxemia was similar between groups. Duration of procedure, duration of hypoxemia, number of attempts and increases in mean blood pressure were also similar between groups. 94% of infants experienced bradycardia during the procedure. CONCLUSION: We failed to demonstrate the effectiveness of morphine in reducing the physiological instability or time needed to perform elective intubations. Alternatives, perhaps with more rapid onset of action, should be considered
Psychometric Properties of the Adolescent and Young Adult Men – Health Indicators Scale (AYAM-HIS)
The goal of this current study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the AYAM-HIS among a select sample of AYAMs, a priority population experiencing disparate health outcomes compared to women. These preliminary results indicate that AYAM-HIS yielded reliable and valid data, thus providing a means to measure indicators of health behaviors and possible outcomes within this population. The AYAM-HIS can provide the necessary information to assess current health behaviors so as to provide a foundation from which interventions can be designed. Future research into reducing survey fatigue related to AYAM-HIS and testing with diverse populations are warranted
