Are there lasting impacts of aid to poor areas ? Evidence from rural China
The paper revisits the siteof a large, World Bank-financed, rural development program in China 10 years after it began and four years after disbursements ended. The program emphasized community participation in multi-sectoral interventions (including farming, animal husbandry, infrastructure and social services). Data were collected on 2,000 households in project and nonproject areas, spanning 10 years. A double-difference estimator of the program's impact (on top of pre-existing governmental programs) reveals sizeable short-term income gains that were mostly saved. Only modest gains to mean consumption emerged in the longer term-in rough accord with the gain to permanent income. Certain types of households gained more than others. The educated poor were under-covered by the community-based selection process-greatly reducing overall impact. The main results are robust to corrections for various sources of selection bias, including village targeting and interference due to spillover effects generated by the response of local governments to the external aid.Rural Poverty Reduction,Access to Finance,,Poverty Monitoring&Analysis,Economic Theory&Research
Anti-rollover control of a heavy-duty vehicle based on lateral load transfer rate
With the rapid development of the highway network construction and heavy-duty vehicle market, the rollover accidents of heavy-duty vehicle continue to increase. In order to improve rollover stability of vehicle, a four degree of freedom (DOF) heavy-duty vehicle model is established. An anti-rollover control strategy is designed by using differential braking system to control the lateral load transfer rate (LTR). The dynamic simulation of vehicle with and without control is fulfilled in Matlab/Simulink. Then, the vehicle responses under typical angle step input are compared and analyzed with different road surface adhesion coefficient, vehicle speed, steering wheel angle and vehicle load. The results show that the proposed control strategy is able to improve vehicle rollover stability greatly and is also beneficial to vehicle yaw stability. The increase of road surface adhesion coefficient, vehicle speed, steering wheel angle or vehicle load has positive correlation with the rollover control effect
Solar light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution over ZnIn2S4 loaded with transition-metal sulfides
A series of Pt-loaded MS/ZnIn2S4 (MS = transition-metal sulfide: Ag2S, SnS, CoS, CuS, NiS, and MnS) photocatalysts was investigated to show various photocatalytic activities depending on different transition-metal sulfides. Thereinto, CoS, NiS, or MnS-loading lowered down the photocatalytic activity of ZnIn2S4, while Ag2S, SnS, or CuS loading enhanced the photocatalytic activity. After loading 1.0 wt.% CuS together with 1.0 wt.% Pt on ZnIn2S4, the activity for H2 evolution was increased by up to 1.6 times, compared to the ZnIn2S4 only loaded with 1.0 wt.% Pt. Here, transition-metal sulfides such as CuS, together with Pt, acted as the dual co-catalysts for the improved photocatalytic performance. This study indicated that the application of transition-metal sulfides as effective co-catalysts opened up a new way to design and prepare high-efficiency and low-cost photocatalysts for solar-hydrogen conversion
Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on cognitive impairment after aneurysm subarachnoid hemorrhage
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on cognitive impairment after aneurysm subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH).
Methods: The current study was carried out in a regional neurosurgical center in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province of China from January 2019 to September 2020. A total of 150 patients with persistent cognitive dysfunction at 3 months after aSAH onset were enrolled, which were randomly classified into group A (HBOT) and group B (control) via the random number table method. The outcome was evaluated by Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA).
Results: There were no significant differences between group A and group B with regard to MoCA score and proportions of normal MoCA patients at 3 months after HBOT (p > 0.05). Both groups showed no significant differences in proportions of normal MoCA patients at 6 months after HBOT (p > 0.05). However, there were significant differences between group A and group B with MoCA score of patients at 6 months after HBOT (p < 0.05). There were also significant differences in MoCA score and proportions of normal MoCA patients at 9 months after HBOT.
Conclusion: HBOT alleviates cognitive impairment after aSAH, and thus may be used to manage cognitive impairment in patients after aSAH. However, further clinical trials are required prior to application in clinical practice
Building information modeling integrated with electronic commerce material procurement and supplier performance management system
This paper describes an innovative approach to the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and electronic commerce (e-commerce) in a material procurement process for improved design-construction integration. The paper includes the present applications, benefits, limitations and barriers to e-commerce and BIM in material procurement processes, compares the present commercial BIM based and non-BIM based quantity takeoff and cost estimating software, and identifies potential benefits of integrating BIM and e-commerce software solutions for construction quantity takeoff, cost estimating and procurement processes. The authors propose a framework for integrating BIM for quantity takeoff and cost estimating applications with e-commerce solutions for material procurement and supplier performance evaluation. The paper presents a proposed solution to link BIM-derived data with RS Means unit price cost data to generate accurate cost estimating reports, one weight coefficient-based model to evaluate the performance of material suppliers, and a preliminary version of corresponding BIM-based application integrated with e-commerce software system
Dynamics of photosynthesis in Eichhornia crassipes Solms of Jiangsu of China and their influencing factors
With LI-6400 portable photosynthesis system, the photosynthetic characteristics of artificially cultured Eichhornia crassipes in Jiangsu, China, were monitored from June 1 to November 14, 2009. Both the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in different positions and light and temperature-response curves of the top fourth leaf were measured in an open-circuit gas channel system in June, July, and August, respectively. The top third to sixth leaves matured with a high Pn in August, 2009. The values of the maximum net photosynthesis (Pmax), light component point (LCP) and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of the top fourth leaf of E. crassipes were 34.5±0.72 and 20.25±3.6 μmol m-2s-1 as well as 0.0532±0.0014, respectively, significantly higher than those in rice and maize. The light-saturation point (LSP) of leaves of E. crassipes was 2358±69 μmol m-2s-1, significantly higher than that in rice and much close to that in maize. The natural light intensity and temperatures in Jiangsu are suitable for E. crassipes to rapidly grow but not good enough for it to show the maximum internal photosynthetic capacity from the perspective of photosynthetic physiology, thus resulting in its low biomass in this region.Key words: Eichhornia crassipes, photosynthetic characteristics, environmental influencing factors
Reservoir Modeling of Braided River Reservoirs Based on Geological Knowledge Database: A Case Study of P1x Formation of the Daniudi Gas Field, Ordos Basin, China
AbstractThe sandy braided river depositional system developed in the Lower Shihezi Formation of the Daniudi gas field, Ordos Basin. It has the characteristics of frequent migration and oscillation of braided channels and large well spacing, making it challenging to portray the braided river sand body in this area, bringing uncertainty to the 3D geological modeling of the reservoir. This study takes the primary gas reservoir H1 member as an example. It establishes a quantitative geological knowledge database for the reservoir by statistically fitting the correlation equations between the braided channel and channel bar in the planes and profiles to reduce the uncertainty of reservoir modeling. This study combines the multisource and multiscale information from modern sedimentation, field outcrops, and tank simulation experiments of the braided river. From the data, the distribution intervals for the thickness and width of the braided channel sand body in the H1 member are 1–22 m and 7–320 m, respectively, and the thickness, width, and length distribution intervals of the sand body in the channel bar are 3–30 m, 80–1500 m, and 240–4200 m, respectively. A 3D training image is established using the object-based simulation method based on the H1 member’s well data and combining the quantitative parameters of various microfacies in the geological knowledge database. The multiple-point geostatistical modeling method is applied to establish a sedimentary microfacies model. The model’s uncertainty is reduced through multi-information fusion constraint modeling, providing a reliable basis for guiding the prediction of the remaining gas in the Daniudi gas field
Coupling Coordination Relationship between Urban Sprawl and Urbanization Quality in the West Taiwan Strait Urban Agglomeration, China: Observation and Analysis from DMSP/OLS Nighttime Light Imagery and Panel Data
Urban sprawl is the most prominent characteristic of urbanization, and increasingly affects local and regional sustainable development. The observation and analysis of urban sprawl dynamics and their relationship with urbanization quality are essential for framing integrative urban planning. In this study, the urban areas of the West Taiwan Strait Urban Agglomeration (WTSUA) were extracted using nighttime light imagery from 1992 to 2013. The spatio-temporal characteristics and pattern of urban sprawl were quantitatively analyzed by combining an urban expansion rate index and a standard deviation ellipse model. The urbanization quality was assessed using an entropy weight model, and its relationship with urban sprawl was calculated by a coupling coordination degree model. The results showed that the urban area in the WTSUA experienced a significant increase, i.e., 18,806.73 km2, during the period 1992–2013. The central cities grew by 11.08% and noncentral cities by 27.43%, with a general uneven city rank-size distribution. The urban sprawl showed a circular expansion pattern, accompanied by a gradual centroid migration of urban areas from the southeast coast to the central-western regions. The coupling coordination level between urban expansion and urbanization quality increased from serious incoordination in 1992 to basic coordination in 2013. Dual driving forces involving state-led policies and market-oriented land reform had a positive influence on the harmonious development of urban sprawl and urbanization quality of the WTSUA. This research offers an effective approach to monitor changes in urban sprawl and explore the coupling coordination relationship between urban sprawl and urbanization quality. The study provides important scientific references for the formulation of future policies and planning for sustainable development in urban agglomerations
Early-start antiplatelet therapy after operation in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage and high risk of ischemic events (E-start):Protocol for a multi-centered, prospective, open-label, blinded endpoint randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND: For severe spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sSICH) patients with high risk of ischemic events, the incidence of postoperative major cardiovascular/cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular events (MACCPE) is notable. Although antiplatelet therapy is a potential way to benefit these patients, the severe hemorrhagic complications, e.g., intracranial re-hemorrhage, is a barrier for early starting antiplatelet therapy. OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial aims to identify the benefit and safety of early starting antiplatelet therapy after operation for sSICH patients with high risk of ischemic events. METHODS: This study is a multicenter, prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded-endpoint trial. We will enroll 250 sSICH patients with a high risk of ischemic events (including cerebral infarcts, transient ischemic attack, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and deep venous thrombosis). The participants will be randomized in a 1:1 manner to early-start group (start antiplatelet therapy at 3 days after operation) and normal-start group (start antiplatelet therapy at 30 days after operation). The early-start group will receive aspirin 100 mg daily. The control group will not receive antithrombotic therapy until 30 days after operation. The efficacy endpoint is the incidence of MACCPE, and the safety endpoint is the incidence of intracranial re-hemorrhage. DISCUSSION: The Early-Start antiplatelet therapy after operation in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage trial (E-start) is the first randomized trial about early start antiplatelet therapy for operated sSICH patients with a high risk of ischemic events. This study will provide a new strategy and evidence for postoperative management in the future.
