    Multi-Label Learning with Label Enhancement

The task of multi-label learning is to predict a set of relevant labels for the unseen instance. Traditional multi-label learning algorithms treat each class label as a logical indicator of whether the corresponding label is relevant or irrelevant to the instance, i.e., +1 represents relevant to the instance and -1 represents irrelevant to the instance. Such label represented by -1 or +1 is called logical label. Logical label cannot reflect different label importance. However, for real-world multi-label learning problems, the importance of each possible label is generally different. For the real applications, it is difficult to obtain the label importance information directly. Thus we need a method to reconstruct the essential label importance from the logical multilabel data. To solve this problem, we assume that each multi-label instance is described by a vector of latent real-valued labels, which can reflect the importance of the corresponding labels. Such label is called numerical label. The process of reconstructing the numerical labels from the logical multi-label data via utilizing the logical label information and the topological structure in the feature space is called Label Enhancement. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-label learning framework called LEMLL, i.e., Label Enhanced Multi-Label Learning, which incorporates regression of the numerical labels and label enhancement into a unified framework. Extensive comparative studies validate that the performance of multi-label learning can be improved significantly with label enhancement and LEMLL can effectively reconstruct latent label importance information from logical multi-label data.Comment: ICDM 201

Influence of time-dependence on failure of echelon rock joints through a novel DEM model

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in [European Journal of Environmental and Civil Engineering] on [September 2015], available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/19648189.2015.1064624This article investigates the time-dependent influence on the shear failure behaviour of parallel rock joints in the echelon arrangement due to chemical weathering, which can be treated as a generalised time-dependency of the rock material. A time-dependent parameter alpha, identifying the accumulated relative mass removal of bonding material, has been implemented into a novel distinct element method bond contact model. This model is based on a series of mechanical test on bonded aluminium rods with different bond geometries. The numerical direct shear test results of echelon rock joints characterised by different values of alpha show that increasing time-dependent parameter alpha can lead to a lower crack initiation and peak stresses. This is accompanied by a growing ratio of the microscopic compressive-shear-torsional (CST) bond failure number of bond failures to the total number of failures, except for the case without weathering influence. High values of alpha render the material bridge a weaker part to be cut through, generating a large number of CST bond breakages along the central shear axis.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

AIM: To evaluatethe clinical efficacy of trabeculectomy combined with amniotic membrane transplantation for refractory glaucoma. <p>METHODS: This study included 29 cases(29 eyes)with developmental refractory glaucoma at such high risks as neovascular, uveitis, aphakia, pseudophakic.Trabeculectomy with amniotic membrane transplantation was performed in 13 cases and trabeculectomy without amniotic membrane transplantation in 16 cases. The outcome measurements included postoperative intraocular pressure(IOP), the used quantity of antiglaucoma medications, the morphologic characteristics of the filtering blebs and complications. All patients were followed for 12mo.<p>RESULTS: Complete success was seen 11/13(84.6%)in study eyes and 10/16(62.5%)in aontrol eyes at 6mo postoperatively(<i>P</i><0.05), and 10/13(76.9%)in study eyes and 10/16(62.5%)in control eyes at 12mo after surgery, respectively(<i>P</i><0.05). IOP decreased from 50.3±11.3mmHg and 49.7±10.7mmHg preoperatively in study and control groups to 15.7±1.1mmHg and 19.8±2.3mmHg respectively at 12mo of postoperation(<i>P</i><0.05). Early postoperative ocular hypotony developed in 3(18.8%)control eyes owing to excessive filtration but none of them in study eyes. Encapsulated bleb occurred in 6(37.5%)control eyes but only in 1(7.7%)study eyes.<p>CONCLUSION: In refractory glaucoma, trabeculectomy combined with amniotic membrane transplantation compared to trabeculectomy without amniotic membrane transplantation has higher success rates, better control of postoperative IOP, and less complication rates

A Content-Adaptive Side Information Generation Method for Distributed Video Coding

    Get PDF
AbstractIn this paper, a content-adaptive method to generate side information at the block level is presented. First, motion compensated temporal interpolation (MCTI) algorithm is used between the reconstructed key frames at the decoder to acquire initial motion vectors. Second, the image is segmented and the edge of moving region is detected by obtained the residual frame between two consecutive key frames. Furthermore, hierarchical motion estimation (HME) and motion vector filter (MVF) are adopted for edge region and an adaptive motion vector filter (AMVF) is introduced in non-edge region to correct the false estimated motion vectors. The proposal is tested and compared with the results of the state-of-the-art DISCOVER codec and RD improvements on the set of test sequences are observed
