    With the provision and consumption of services increasingly driven by software, the execution and effects of behavior occur at machine speed, the actions of a small number of people potentially impacting on many in terms of loss of privacy, cost, and in some cases even physical harm. Practitioners of information security are trained to knowledgeably employ information technologies for the manipulation of information and services. However, this same skill set poses a potential threat to many others leaving the ends to categorize the means. With the burgeoning dependence of society on information technologies, the antecedents of ethical behavior in practitioners of information security justify a corresponding increase in relevance to study. The effect of the modern, relatively earlier introduction of information technologies into life experience on the nascent development of the information technology ethical ‘compass’ of individuals on their path to professional work can only amplify the case for analysis

    Asian Americans, Political Organizations, and Participation in Chicago Electoral Precincts

    Precinct-level data for voter registration and turnout in Chicago elections are used to assess the impact of the Asian population and party organization on political participation during the 1990s. Controlling for the effects of newer immigration, mobility, and socioeconomic status, the authors learn that larger Asian-American populations are associated with higher voter registration. Voter turnout is negatively affected in areas of higher Asian populations but attenuates when independent precincts are examined separately from machine-style precincts. This suggests that registration may be encouraged in Asian areas, but voting appears to be negatively affected by political party organizations

    Impact of Outpatient vs Inpatient ABSSSI Treatment on Outcomes: A Retrospective Observational Analysis of Medical Charts Across US Emergency Departments

    Background The objective of this study was to characterize treatment of patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) and describe the association between hospital admission and emergency department (ED) visits or readmissions within 30 days after initial episode of care (IEC). Methods This was a retrospective, observational, cohort study of adults with ABSSSI who presented to an ED between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. Patient, health care facility, and treatment characteristics, including unplanned ED visits or readmissions, were obtained through manual chart review and abstraction. Adjusted logistic regression analysis examined likelihood of all-cause unplanned ED visits or readmissions between admitted and nonadmitted patients. Results Records from 1527 ED visits for ABSSSI from 40 centers were reviewed (admitted, n = 578 [38%]; nonadmitted, n = 949 [62%]). Admitted patients were typically older (mean age, 52.2 years vs 43.0 years), more likely to be morbidly obese (body mass index \u3e 40 kg/m2; 17.3% vs 9.1%), and had more comorbidities (Charlson Comorbidity Index ≥ 4; 24.4% vs 6.8%) compared with those not admitted. In the primary analysis, adjusted logistic regression, controlling for comorbidities and severity of illness, demonstrated that there was a similar likelihood of all-cause unplanned ED visits or readmissions between admitted and nonadmitted patients (odds ratio, 1.03; 95% confidence interval, 0.74–1.43; P = .87). Conclusions ABSSSI treatment pathways leveraging outpatient treatment vs hospital admission support similar likelihood of unplanned 30-day ED visits or readmissions, an important clinical outcome and quality metric at US hospitals. Further research regarding the decision criteria around hospital admission to avoid potentially unnecessary hospitalizations is warranted

    Implementation of an ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infraction Bypass Protocol in the Northern United Arab Emirates

    Objective: The aim was to evaluate the translation of an ST-segment elevation myocardial infraction (STEMI) bypass protocol to the outcomes of patients with acute coronary syndrome in the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted, which included all patients who had a prehospital 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) performed by ambulance crews. Analysis of those who were identified as having STEMI and who subsequently underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was performed. Results: A total of 152 patients had a 12-lead ECG performed during the pilot study period (February 24, 2016-August 31, 2016) with 118 included for analysis. Mean patient age was 52 years. There were 87 male (74%) and 31 female (26%) patients. Twenty-nine patients suffered a STEMI, and data were available for 11 who underwent PCI. There was no mortality, and no major adverse cardiac events were reported. The median door-to-balloon (D2B) time was 73 min (range 48-124), and 81% of patients had a D2B time \u3c90 min. Discharge data were available for six patients: All were discharged home with no impediments to rehabilitation. Conclusion: This pilot study has demonstrated agreement with the existing literature surrounding prehospital ECG and PCI activation in an unstudied STEMI population and in a novel clinical setting. It has demonstrated a D2B time of \u3c90 min in over 80% of STEMI patients, and a faster mean D2B time than self-presentations (mean 77 min vs. 113 min), with no associated mortality or major adverse cardiac events

    Testosterone influences renal electrolyte excretion in SHR/y and WKY males

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Y-chromosome (Yc) and testosterone (T) increase blood pressure and may also influence renal electrolyte excretion. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine if the Yc combined with T manipulation could influence renal Na and K excretion.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To investigate the role of the Yc and T, consomic borderline hypertensive (SHR/y) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat strains were used (15 weeks) in three T treatment groups: castrate, castrate with T implant and gonadally intact males. Urine was collected (24 hrs at 15 weeks of age) for Na and K measurements by flame photometry. RT-PCR was used to demonstrate the presence of renal androgen receptor (AR) transcripts. Plasma T and aldosterone were measured by RIA. In another experiment the androgen receptor was blocked using flutamide in the diet.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Na and K excretion were decreased by T in SHR/y and WKY. AR transcripts were identified in SHR/y and WKY kidneys. Plasma aldosterone was decreased in the presence of T. Blockade of the AR resulted in a significant increase in Na excretion but not in K excretion in both SHR/y and WKY males.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>T influences electrolyte excretion through an androgen receptor dependent mechanism. There was not a differential Yc involvement in electrolyte excretion between WKY and SHR/y males.</p

    Remnant magnetization above room temperature in semiconducting Y_0.5Ca_0.5BaCo_4O_7

    The Y_0.5Ca_0.5BaCo_4O_7 compound exhibits four magnetic anomalies at the temperatures 387, 281, 52, and 14 K; all anomalies show characteristics typical for spin freezing into disordered states: frequency dependent transition temperature in the AC magnetic susceptibility together with relaxation of thermoremnant magnetization. Y_0.5Ca_0.5BaCo_4O_7 is a semiconductor with a small band-gap of 0.17 eV concluded from four-point conductivity measurements and the conductivity is proportional to T^(-3/4), suggesting an electron hopping mechanism involving Co^(2+) and Co^(3+) ions; at higher temperatures, double-exchange is the proposed reason for the strong magnetic interaction. At lower temperatures, super-exchange interactions start to compete with the double-exchange for domination and this competition together with geometrical frustrations in the structure are responsible for magnetic disorder down to 2 K. Covalence between Co and O is also discussed as additional reason for the strong magnetic interactions.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure

    Effects of CO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e on Growth Rate, C:N:P, and Fatty Acid Composition of Seven Marine Phytoplankton Species

    Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary substrate for photosynthesis by the phytoplankton that form the base of the marine food web and mediate biogeochemical cycling of C and nutrient elements. Specific growth rate and elemental composition (C:N:P) were characterized for 7 cosmopolitan coastal and oceanic phytoplankton species (5 diatoms and 2 chlorophytes) using low density, nutrient-replete, semi-continuous culture experiments in which CO2 was manipulated to 4 levels ranging from post-bloom/glacial maxima (ppm) to geological maxima levels (\u3e2900 ppm). Specific growth rates at high CO2 were from 19 to 60% higher than in low CO2 treatments in 4 species and 44% lower in 1 species; there was no significant change in 2 species. Higher CO2 availability also resulted in elevated C:P and N:P molar ratios in Thalassiosira pseudonana (~60 to 90% higher), lower C:P and N:P molar ratios in 3 species (~20 to 50% lower), and no change in 3 species. Carbonate system-driven changes in growth rate did not necessarily result in changes in elemental composition, or vice versa. In a subset of 4 species for which fatty acid composition was examined, elevated CO2 did not affect the contribution of polyunsaturated fatty acids to total fatty acids significantly. These species show relatively little sensitivity between present day CO2 and predicted ocean acidification scenarios (year 2100). The results, however, demonstrate that CO2 availability at environmentally and geologically relevant scales can result in large changes in phytoplankton physiology, with potentially large feedbacks to ocean biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem structure
