Caring for the collective: biopower and agential subjectification in wildlife conservation

The equivalence of four extensions of context-free grammars
There is currently considerable interest among computational linguists in grammatical formalisms with highly restricted generative power. This paper concerns the relationship between the class of string languages generated by several such formalisms, namely, combinatory categorial grammars, head grammars, linear indexed grammars, and tree adjoining grammars. Each of these formalisms is known to generate a larger class of languages than context-free grammars. The four formalisms under consideration were developed independently and appear superficially to be quite different from one another. The result presented in this paper is that all four of the formalisms under consideration generate exactly the same class of string languages
Constraints on a Massive Dirac Neutrino Model
We examine constraints on a simple neutrino model in which there are three
massless and three massive Dirac neutrinos and in which the left handed
neutrinos are linear combinations of doublet and singlet neutrinos. We examine
constraints from direct decays into heavy neutrinos, indirect effects on
electroweak parameters, and flavor changing processes. We combine these
constraints to examine the allowed mass range for the heavy neutrinos of each

Characterizing cognitive deficits and dementia in an aging urban population in India.
Rapid rise in the population of older adults in India will lead to the need for increased health care services related to diagnosis, management, and long-term care for those with dementia and cognitive impairment. A direct approach for service provision through memory clinics can be an effective, successful, and sustaining means of delivering specialized health care services. We have established a memory clinic in Mumbai, India by employing the diverse clinical skills available in Indian academic institutions, diagnostic and research expertise of clinicians and psychologists, and the support of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Our project involved recruitment of patients, clinical and neuropsychological assessment, and standardized diagnostic procedures, demonstrating the feasibility of using research methods to develop a memory clinic. In this paper, we describe the development of a community-based memory clinic in urban India, including linguistic and cultural factors and present detailed results, including diagnostic characterization, on 194 subjects with various stages of cognitive deficits. Our findings support the feasibility of developing a memory clinic in a public hospital and successful use of research diagnostic criteria to categorize cognitive deficits observed in this population, which may be used to inform the development of other such clinics
The Three Families from SM-like Chiral Models
We give a detailed description of the model construction procedures about our
new approach to the family structure of the standard model. SM-like chiral
fermion spectra, largely "derivable" from the gauge anomaly constraints, are
formulated in a symmetry
framework as an extension of the SM symmetry. The case gives naturally
three families as a result, with nontrivially embedded into the
. Such a spectrum has extra vector-like quarks and
leptons. We illustrate how an acceptable symmetry breaking pattern can be
obtained through a relatively simple scalar sector which gives naturally
hierarchical quark mass matrices. Compatibility with various FCNC constraints
and some interesting aspects of the possible phenomenological features are
discussed, from a non-model specific perspective. The question of incorporating
supersymmetry without putting in the Higgses as extra supermultiplet is also

Half-Earth or Whole Earth? Radical ideas for conservation, and their implications
AbstractWe question whether the increasingly popular, radical idea of turning half the Earth into a network of protected areas is either feasible or just. We argue that this Half-Earth plan would have widespread negative consequences for human populations and would not meet its conservation objectives. It offers no agenda for managing biodiversity within a human half of Earth. We call instead for alternative radical action that is both more effective and more equitable, focused directly on the main drivers of biodiversity loss by shifting the global economy from its current foundation in growth while simultaneously redressing inequality.</jats:p
A Comprehensive Study of Leptoquark Bounds
We make a comprehensive study of indirect bounds on scalar leptoquarks that
couple chirally and diagonally to the first generation by examining available
data from low energy experiments as well as from high energy e+ e- and p pbar
accelerators. The strongest bounds turn out to arise from low energy data: For
leptoquarks that couple to right--handed quarks, the most stringent bound comes
from atomic parity violation. For leptoquarks that couple to left--handed
quarks, there are two mass regions: At low masses the bounds arise from atomic
parity violation or from universality in leptonic pi decays. At masses above a
few hundred GeV's, the dominant bounds come from the FCNC processes that are
unavoidable in these leptoquarks: The FCNC bound of the up sector, that arises
from D-Dbar mixing, combines with the FCNC bounds from the down sector, that
arise from rare K decays and K-Kbar mixing, to a bound on the flavour
CONSERVING coupling to the first generation.
The bounds restrict leptoquarks that couple with electromagnetic strength to
lie above 600 GeV or 630 GeV for leptoquarks that couple to RH quarks, and
above 1040 GeV, 440 GeV, and 750 GeV for the SU(2)_W scalar, doublet and
triplet leptoquarks that couple to LH quarks. These bounds are considerably
stronger than the first results from the direct searches at HERA. Our bounds
also already exclude large regions in the parameter space that could be

Phenomenological Consequences of Singlet Neutrinos
In this paper, we study the phenomenology of right-handed neutrino
isosinglets. We consider the general situation where the neutrino masses are
not necessarily given by , where and are the Dirac and
Majorana mass terms respectively. The consequent mixing between the light and
heavy neutrinos is then not suppressed, and we treat it as an independent
parameter in the analysis. It turns out that conversion is an important
experiment in placing limits on the heavy mass scale () and the mixing.
Mixings among light neutrinos are constrained by neutrinoless double beta
decay, as well as by solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments. Detailed

Bounds on Vector Leptoquarks
We derive bounds on vector leptoquarks coupling to the first generation,
using data from low energy experiments as well as from high energy
accelerators. Similarly to the case of scalar leptoquarks, we find that the
strongest indirect bounds arise from atomic parity violation and universality
in leptonic pi decays. These bounds are considerably stronger than the first
direct bounds of HERA, restricting vector leptoquarks that couple with
electromagnetic strength to right-handed quarks to lie above 430 GeV or 460
GeV, and leptoquarks that couple with electromagnetic strength to left-handed
quarks to lie above 1.3 TeV, 1.2 TeV and 1.5 TeV for the SU(2)_W singlet,

Aging characterization of metals for exhaust systems
The mechanical characteristics of four materials used in automotive exhaust systems have been compared after an aging treatment to evaluate the combined effects of thermo-mechanical fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose, an experimental aging procedure has been developed. This procedure is composed of chemical, thermal and mechanical cycles, which are combined and repeated to simulate the actual operating conditions of automotive exhaust systems. Three austenitic steels (AISI 309, AISI 316Ti, and AISI 321) and a nickel-based alloy (Inconel 625) are tested. The results show that Inconel 625 and AISI 309 are less affected by the aging process than the other material
