Meaning Creators: The Communicative Power of Language and Conceptual Art via Fashion Phenomena

    Get PDF
Conceptual Art was an avant-garde movement that gave special attention to the idea, meaning, and concept rather than the beauty, form and art piece. From the early days of the movement in the 1960s, Conceptual Art and language have tied together. In fact, some conceptual artists attempted to make a bridge between language and art. Language offers many artists, such as John Baldessari, Joseph Kosuth, and Jenny Holzer, a lot of possibilities to convey their provocative messages to people. In this way, they succeeded to engaged people directly. This communicative power of Conceptual Art and language has inspired the design world, in particular, the fashion world. The purpose of this research is to investigate the connections between Conceptual Art and language in fashion. At first sight, it seems that there is no relationship between Conceptual Art, language and fashion phenomena. Because fashion is a big business and selling products play a vital role for fashion designers. On the contrary, in Conceptual Art, the concept or the idea is more important compared to the final product and market needs. This paper will also discuss how some fashion designers succeeded to show the relationship between Conceptual Art, language and the final product. It can be concluded, for these fashion designers, fashion is beyond the clothing itself. Through language, they become a kind of meaning creator which is the ultimate goal in Conceptual Art. This paper is focused on the language and the music in Mohd Fuad Arif’s artworks especially in his installations. Language is a powerful tool that can be used as a source of inspiration for contemporary artists. For Malaysian conceptual artist Mohd Fuad Arif the Language plays a significant role in particular in his installations. Indeed for Mohd Fuad Arif the Language itself can be seen as artwork. Also, the specific question which investigated was the relationship between artist or artist intent, artwork, and spectator. The purpose of this paper was to provide a deeper insight into Mohd Fuad Arif’s artworks.  This study attempted to decode some of his installations such as Pembukaan (The opening), Ya Allah Selamatkan Bumi Singapura (O Allah, Save Singapore). The different interpretations of the same subject are the main characteristic of the postmodern era. The author of this paper had his own interpretation of Mohd Fuad Arif’s installations. Keywords: installation, Mohd Fuad Arif, language, postmodern era, conceptual ar

Thin-Film AlN-on-Silicon Resonant Gyroscopes: Design, Fabrication, and Eigenmode Operation

    Get PDF
Resonant MEMS gyroscopes have been rapidly adopted in various consumer, industrial, and automotive applications thanks to the significant improvements in their performance over the past decade. The current efforts in enhancing the performance of high-precision resonant gyroscopes are mainly focused on two seemingly contradictory metrics, larger bandwidth and lower noise level, to push the technology towards navigation applications. The key enabling factor for the realization of low-noise high-bandwidth resonant gyroscopes is the utilization of a strong electromechanical transducer at high frequencies. Thin-film piezoelectric-on-silicon technology provides a very efficient transduction mechanism suitable for implementation of bulk-mode resonant gyroscopes without the need for submicron capacitive gaps or large DC polarization voltages. More importantly, in-air operation of piezoelectric devices at moderate Q values allows for the cointegration of mode-matched gyroscopes and accelerometers on a common substrate for inertial measurement units. This work presents the design, fabrication, characterization, and method of mode matching of piezoelectric-on-silicon resonant gyroscopes. The degenerate in-plane flexural vibration mode shapes of the resonating structure are demonstrated to have a strong gyroscopic coupling as well as a large piezoelectric transduction coefficient. Eigenmode operation of resonant gyroscopes is introduced as the modal alignment technique for the piezoelectric devices independently of the transduction mechanism. Controlled displacement feedback is also employed as the frequency matching technique to accomplish complete mode matching of the piezoelectric gyroscopes.Ph.D

Dear Editor,Since December 2019 and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, it has rapidly spread and attracted the World Health Organization’s attention and concern. COVID-19 is a new case of coronavirus that is closely related to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), with a high transmission rate.1 The disease is usually accompanied by simple respiratory symptoms such as fever and dry cough, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms. COVID-19 has specific characteristics that has led to increased anxiety in the society. Person-to-person transmission, high prevalence rates, treatment failure, rumors and misinformation about the origins and causes of the disease, emotional and exaggerated images and news, and the possibility of recurrence of the disease are among the factors causing significant anxiety compared with past pandemics.2 With the outbreak of COVID-19 and subsequent changes such as unemployment in high-risk jobs, providing an emergency level of public health, and home quarantine, social and occupational relations and people lifestyles were strongly influenced. The number of deaths increased and strict measures were taken to control the disease’s spread in different world areas. One of the measures taken to control COVID-19 was home quarantine, which in itself can have a variety of consequences, including increased anxiety, stress and reduced sleep quality for individuals.3 Patients with or suspected of COVID-19 often experience fear and anxiety about the consequences of the deadly virus. People in the quarantine may also experience fatigue, loneliness, depression, and anger. Furthermore, some common symptoms of this disease, such as fever, body aches, loss of taste and smell, hypoxia, cough and dry throat, reduce sleep quality.4The relationship between sleep quality and physical and mental health is evident to all. Sleep quality is a relatively complex and subjective concept that cannot be measured in the laboratory, and factors affecting each person’s quality of sleep can be different. In general, sleep duration, delay in falling asleep, sleep efficiency, sleep disorders, sleeping pills, and impaired daily functioning are significant factors that play a role in sleep quality.5 COVID-19 is a global pandemic that can affect the physical and mental health of individuals. Previous studies evaluating pandemic and infectious diseases such as SARS and Ebola virus have shown that pandemic diseases lead to disorders and reduced sleep quality in individuals.6 Studies in previous pandemic conditions have shown that the mental health of non-infected individuals was more affected than that of infected individuals so that those who were afraid of developing the disease reported more psychological problems

Talking Archives: Voice-Over in Archival Film Practices

    Get PDF
Voice-over narration remains an overlooked element in the study of archival film practices. Theorists and filmmakers have explored the ways in which voice-over can be employed in documentary and fiction filmmaking, and in the essay film, but there has been little attention to its role in archival film practices. Some of the permutations of voice-over include the use of several pieces of narration from different sources; disembodied narrator; subjective commentary; unreliable narrator; self-reflexive narration, and no voice-over at all. Formal experimentation with voice-over in archival films has allowed filmmakers to introduce their often fragmentary audio-visual materials into new contexts and to establish novel forms of continuity. With equal focus on the aesthetic qualities of voice-over narration and its role in relation to narrative, this thesis examines the use of voice-over in the archival films of Peter Greenaway and Craig Baldwin. Through a close textual analysis of their films, this thesis aims to demonstrate the potential of voice-over narration in shaping the viewer's perception of the archive. It is argued that through an emphasis on the discontinuous nature of archival documents in their films (on thematic as well as formal levels) they construct partially-developed narratives, which serve different ends in each film. It is shown that whereas Greenaway's use of voice-over narration points to the subjectivity of the act of accessing and experiencing the archive, narration in Baldwin's cinema primarily draws attention to socio-political circumstances in which certain audio-visual "documents" have been produced. Interrogating the role of voice-over narration in archival film practices, this thesis concludes with the possibilities for further experimentation and theorization in this field

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in a worldwide concern. The role of the immunity system and memory cells in this disease and their ability in preventing a secondary infection is a controversial issue. Here we presented a case of reinfection with this virus eight months after the first episode. A twenty-one-year-old man was referred to our local hospital on 19 February 2020 with symptoms of viral infection. COVID-19 infection was confirmed by RT-PCR. He got hospitalized for 5 days. Eight months later on 4 October 2020, he was again referred with symptoms of viral infection and para-clinical tests confirmed COVID-19 infection. He got hospitalized for 6 days in the second episode. Although the immunity system plays important role in COVID-19 infection through the presence of memory cells it doesn’t guarantee permanent immunity to this virus. Reinfection with COVID-19 is possible and has been reported in some other studies.

Introduction: Given the prevalence of Internet use worldwide and its existing risks to societies especially the youngsters, information literacy can affect the use of Internet. Hence, the objective of present study is to assess the relationship between information literacy and Internet addiction and then to investigate the relationship between Internet addiction and general health of students in Iran University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: It is an analytical cross-sectional study which was conducted during 2016 on students in Iran University of Medical Sciences (Tehran, Iran). The sample size for the surveyed community of 6,500 university students was 362 from the Cochran sample size formula. Then, using a simple random sampling method, from each of the colleges, the sample size was selected according to the student population. Three questionnaires of information literacy, Yang's Internet addiction, and general health scale (GHQ-28) were distributed among students. Finally, 365 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Results: 29.9 of students were about to be addicted to the Internet, 1.3 had symptoms of Internet addiction and 68.8 had no addiction. In terms of information literacy, most of the students were in moderate level (60.5 moderate, 3.3 low, and 36.2 high information literacy level). There was a significant inverse relationship between increasing of information literacy and the Internet addiction (r = -0.45 and p<0.001). The score of general health demonstrated an inverse and significant relationship in different levels of Internet addiction (P <0.001). Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, it was perceived that the higher the information literacy, the lower the level of Internet addiction; besides, reduction of internet addiction increased the general health of students. Therefore, considering the importance of students as the leading group in societies, and favorable consequences of increased information literacy, universities' authorities have to develop and run specific programs within the educational and research schedule in order to increase the students' information literacy. Accordingly, undesirable outcomes of Internet use would be diminished and general health of society would be improved. © 2018, Semnan University of Medical Sciences. All rights reserved
