Monolithic shape-programmable dielectric liquid crystal elastomer actuators

Macroscale robotic systems have demonstrated great capabilities of high speed, precise, and agile functions. However, the ability of soft robots to perform complex tasks, especially in centimeter and millimeter scale, remains limited due to the unavailability of fast, energy-efficient soft actuators that can programmably change shape. Here, we combine desirable characteristics from two distinct active materials: fast and efficient actuation from dielectric elastomers and facile shape programmability from liquid crystal elastomers into a single shape changing electrical actuator. Uniaxially aligned monoliths achieve strain rates over 120%/s with energy conversion efficiency of 20% while moving loads over 700 times the actuator weight. The combined actuator technology offers unprecedented opportunities towards miniaturization with precision, efficiency, and more degrees of freedom for applications in soft robotics and beyond

Background and Objectives: Strains of Shigella spp. can cause shigellosis, or bacillary dysentery. That is a public health problem worldwide. The aim of this study was to describe the population structure and genetic relatedness of multidrug resistant S. sonnei and S. flexneri isolated during a one year period from children with diarrhea in Tehran, Iran. Materials and Methods: A total of 70 Shigella spp. were detected during the study period. Twenty MDR isolates of Shigella spp. were randomly selected and used in this study. Bacterial identification was performed by conventional biochemical and serological and confirmed by molecular method. After antimicrobial susceptibility testing, we used Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) for subtyping isolates. Results: We found 14 Shigella sonnei and 6 Shigella flexneri isolates. Results of MLST showed five sequence types (ST) (145, 152, 241, 245, 1502) and BURST analysis revealed the largest number of single locus variant (SLV) and highest frequency (FREQ) for ST152. ST 152 with nine members was predicted as the founder by BURST. Frequency for ST 1502 and ST 245 was four isolates and the least frequency was seen for ST 241 and 145 with one and two members, respectively. ST 145 and ST 245 were described as singletons in BURST. All isolates with ST145 and ST245 were identified as Shigella flexneri. Conclusion: Annual Multi locus sequence typing of MDR Shigella would help us in better understanding of dominant species and comparing our results with the same studies in other countries especially our neighbor countries in source tracking purposes. © Tehran University of Medical Science. In this study, removal of an antibiotic (SDZ) from wastewater using an advanced oxidation process of persulfate (PS) in the presence of iron sulfate (S2O8 –2/Fe+2) was investigated. The operational variables such as; the effect of pH, contact time, iron and PS ion concentrations and initial concentration of SDZ on the efficiency of SDZ removal was studied. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for the analysis and monitoring of SDZ concentration. It was found that the highest rates of SDZ removal were found to be 95.83±1.342%, 87.15±0.929% and 69.09±0.848%, respectively, for initial SDZ concentration of 0.08, 0.2 and 0.4 mmol. The results showed that the S2O8 –2/Fe+2 system would be optimized by contact time of 60 min, pH 4 and iron to PS molar ratio of 1. Therefore, these findings would help to better apply the AOPs to remove recalcitrance pollutants such as SDZ from wastewater

The relationship between IL-17A and IL-22 expression and clinical severity in patients with moderate/severe persistent allergic rhinitis

t PURPOSE: Several reactions leading to numerous effects are regulated by IL-22. However, the relationship between IL-22 and immunopathogensis of allergic rhinitis (AR) has been rarely investigated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the levels of IL-22 and IL-17A in AR patients and their association with clinical severity of persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty mild persistent allergic rhinitis (M PAR) patients, thirty moderate/severe persistent allergic rhinitis (M/S PAR) patients, and thirty healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Local production of IL-22 and IL-17A in PAR patients and healthy controls' nasal mucosa was examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques. Serum levels of IL-22, IL-17A, specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE), and total IgE (tIgE) in PAR patients and healthy controls were determined by ELISA. In addition, blood eosinophil, nasal eosinophils per field, and total nasal syndrome score (TNSS) were also assessed. RESULTS: In comparison with healthy controls, production of IL-22 and IL-17A in M/S PAR patients increased significantly. Furthermore, serum levels as well as the mean number of IL-22+ and IL-17A+ cells in nasal mucosa correlated with sIgE, nasal eosinophil count, and TNSS. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study provide the first evidence that local production of IL-22 might be expressed in PAR patients. The expression of IL-22 and IL-17A, and their correlations with clinical parameters in PAR patients suggest the role of these cytokines in the events involved in the development of PAR

Morphing in nature and beyond: a review of natural and synthetic shape-changing materials and mechanisms

Shape-changing materials open an entirely new solution space for a wide range of disciplines: from architecture that responds to the environment and medical devices that unpack inside the body, to passive sensors and novel robotic actuators. While synthetic shape-changing materials are still in their infancy, studies of biological morphing materials have revealed key paradigms and features which underlie efficient natural shape-change. Here, we review some of these insights and how they have been, or may be, translated to artificial solutions. We focus on soft matter due to its prevalence in nature, compatibility with users and potential for novel design. Initially, we review examples of natural shape-changing materials—skeletal muscle, tendons and plant tissues—and compare with synthetic examples with similar methods of operation. Stimuli to motion are outlined in general principle, with examples of their use and potential in manufactured systems. Anisotropy is identified as a crucial element in directing shape-change to fulfil designed tasks, and some manufacturing routes to its achievement are highlighted. We conclude with potential directions for future work, including the simultaneous development of materials and manufacturing techniques and the hierarchical combination of effects at multiple length scales.</p

A high prevalence of mupirocin and macrolide resistance determinant among Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from burnt patients

Infections due to Staphylococcus aureus have become increasingly common among burn patients. The antibiotic resistance profile of S. aureus isolates and inducible resistance against clindamycin were investigated in this study. The presence of mecA gene, mupA gene and macrolide resistance genes were detected using PCR and multiplex-PCR. The resistance rate to methicillin, erythromycin and mupirocin were 58.5, 58 and 40, respectively. The prevalence of constitutive and inducible resistance among macrolide resistant isolates was 75 and 25, respectively. Ninety five percent of the isolates were positive for one or more erm genes. The most common genes were ermA (75), ermC (72) and ermB (69), respectively. The ermA gene predominated in the strains with the inducible phenotype, while ermC was more common in the isolates with the constitutive phenotype. The msrA gene was only found in one MRSA isolate with the constitutive phenotype. A total of 27 isolates (25) carried the mupA gene. All the mupirocin resistant isolates and almost all the erythromycin resistant isolates were also resistant against methicillin which may indicate an outbreak of MRSA isolates with high-level mupirocin and erythromycin resistance in the burn unit assessed. Background: Shigella spp. are gram negative bacteria, which are of global public health importance. The growing of multidrug-resistant Shigella isolates are a major problem around the world. Methods: Overall, 50 isolates of Shigella spp. from children diarrheic stools were studied. The isolates were identified and confirmed using biochemical, serological and molecular methods (ipaH, wbgZ and rfc genes). Antimicrobial susceptibility test was done according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines against minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, ampicillin, streptomycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin. Also, the role of efflux pump in defense of Shigella against tetracycline was investigated by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) with and without an efflux pump inhibitor. Detection of tetA, tetB, tetC and tetD genes in Shigella was evaluated by conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and real time PCR. Results: Molecular identification revealed a prevalence of 14 for Shigella flexneri and 86 for Shigella sonnei. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 90 of resistant isolates was changed in the presence CCCP. Results of conventional PCR exhibited that 66 of isolates were positive for tetA, while according to real time PCR method, 90 of isolates carried tetA. Positive results for tetB were 12 and 18 by conventional and real time PCR methods, respectively. No positive results were detected for tetC and tetD. Also, tetB was detected only in S. flexneri while tetA was detected in both S. flexneri and S. sonnei. Conclusion: It seems that efflux-mediated tetracycline resistance to tetracycline in S. flexneri can be related to tetB, however resistance in S. sonnei can be related to the expression of tetA. © 2016, IRANIAN JOURNAL OF PATHOLOGY
