    The response of tumour vasculature to angiotensin II revealed by its systemic and local administration to 'tissue-isolated' tumours

    A tissue-isolated preparation of the P22 rat carcinosarcoma was used to investigate the tumour vascular response to angiotensin II (ATII). In particular, the relative importance of systemic and local tumour factors was assessed by comparing tumour vascular resistance during systemic administration of ATII and during administration directly into the tumour-supplying artery. The effect of hypervolaemia on tumour vascular resistance was determined as well as the effect of ATII on oxygen metabolism. Tumour vascular resistance was increased by ATII in a dose-dependent manner. The response was biphasic with an initial peak in resistance followed by a lower plateau phase. Systemic administration of ATII was more effective in increasing tumour vascular resistance than direct administration. This suggests that systemic administration is not causing any reopening of previously collapsed tumour blood vessels. Further evidence for this is that hypervolaemia caused no reduction in tumour vascular resistance and that there was no difference in oxygen extraction by tumours between groups treated with systemically and directly administered ATII. A heterogeneous distribution of ATII receptors in the P22 tumour is a more likely explanation for the known heterogeneity of blood flow response to ATII

    uTHCD: A New Benchmarking for Tamil Handwritten OCR

    Handwritten character recognition is a challenging research in the field of document image analysis over many decades due to numerous reasons such as large writing styles variation, inherent noise in data, expansive applications it offers, non-availability of benchmark databases etc. There has been considerable work reported in literature about creation of the database for several Indic scripts but the Tamil script is still in its infancy as it has been reported only in one database [5]. In this paper, we present the work done in the creation of an exhaustive and large unconstrained Tamil Handwritten Character Database (uTHCD). Database consists of around 91000 samples with nearly 600 samples in each of 156 classes. The database is a unified collection of both online and offline samples. Offline samples were collected by asking volunteers to write samples on a form inside a specified grid. For online samples, we made the volunteers write in a similar grid using a digital writing pad. The samples collected encompass a vast variety of writing styles, inherent distortions arising from offline scanning process viz stroke discontinuity, variable thickness of stroke, distortion etc. Algorithms which are resilient to such data can be practically deployed for real time applications. The samples were generated from around 650 native Tamil volunteers including school going kids, homemakers, university students and faculty. The isolated character database will be made publicly available as raw images and Hierarchical Data File (HDF) compressed file. With this database, we expect to set a new benchmark in Tamil handwritten character recognition and serve as a launchpad for many avenues in document image analysis domain. Paper also presents an ideal experimental set-up using the database on convolutional neural networks (CNN) with a baseline accuracy of 88% on test data.Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, in IEEE Acces

    Modification of tumour blood flow using the hypertensive agent, angiotensin II

    The effects of different doses of angiotensin II (0.02 to 0.5 microgram kg-1 min-1 on mean arterial blood pressure, tissue blood flow and tissue vascular resistance were investigated in BD9 rats. Blood flow was measured using the uptake of 125I- or 14C-labelled iodoantipyrine (125I-IAP and 14C-IAP). Spatial heterogeneity of blood flow within tumours, before and after angiotensin II infusion, was also measured using 14C-IAP and an autoradiographic procedure. Mean arterial blood pressure rose steeply with angiotensin II dose. Blood flow to skeletal muscle, skin overlying the tumour, contralateral skin, small intestine and kidney tended to decline in a dose-dependent manner. Blood flow to the tumour was also reduced (to 80% of control values) but there was no dose response. Blood flow to the heart was slightly increased and blood flow to the brain was unaffected by angiotensin II. Vascular resistance, in all tissues, was increased by angiotensin II infusion. The increase in tumour tissue was similar to that found in skeletal muscle and small intestine and is likely to be caused by a direct vasoconstricting effect of the drug rather than autoregulation of tumour blood flow in the face of an increase in perfusion pressure. The reduction in overall blood flow at the highest perfusion pressure was due to a preferential effect of angiotensin II at the tumour periphery. These results show that some tumours, at least, can respond directly to the effects of vasoactive agents

    Homogenates of tissues have been analysed for the presence of 5'-nucleotidase activity. Sexes are not treated individually since no significant differences were observed. All organs showed marked activity, the highest being in the cardiac tissues, then the kidney, spleen, brain, and low values in the liver and muscles. Comparison with data from other fish studied shows a marked difference between O. striatus and O. punctatus

Branding produk adalah cara seseorang atau penjual membuat suatu khas pada produk yang dihasilkan agar produk tersebut memiliki pesan yang tersampaikan dengan baik dan dipasarkan secara berbeda dan menarik. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan pada mitra usaha Madu Murni Calingsa yang berada di Jalan Pulo Wonokromo no 142, Surabaya. Mitra masih menggunakan cara branding produk dengan tradisional yaitu masih menjelaskan ke orang secara tatap muka. Dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini penulis menggunakan metode pelaksanaan  pemberian edukasi terhadap mitra dalam me-branding produk madu melalui sosial media Instagram dan bagaimana cara memasarkan produk madu melalui berjualan di market place seperti Shopee. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini, mitra mejadi paham bagaimana pentingnya dari branding image produk usahanya dan memahami bahwa berjualan secara langsung atau offline kurang efektif untuk mengembangkan usahanya, diperlukan juga penjualan melalui online seperti market place agar dapat menjangkau banyak pembeli secara global.   Kata Kunci: Madu Murni, Branding Image, Sosial Media, Online Market Plac

    Characterisation of tumour blood flow using a 'tissue-isolated' preparation

    Tumour blood flow was characterised in a 'tissue-isolated' rat tumour model, in which the vascular supply is derived from a single artery and vein. Tumours were perfused in situ and blood flow was calculated from simultaneous measurement of (1) venous outflow from the tumour and (2) uptake into the tumour of radiolabelled iodo-antipyrine (IAP). Comparison of results from the two measurements enabled assessment of the amount of blood 'shunted' through the tumours with minimal exchange between blood and tissue. Kinetics of IAP uptake were also used to determine the apparent volume of distribution (VDapp) for the tracer and the equilibrium tissue-blood partition coefficient (lambda). lambda was also measured by in vitro techniques and checks were made for binding and metabolism of IAP using high-pressure liquid chromatography. VDapp and lambda were used to calculate the perfused fraction (alpha) of the tumours. Tumour blood flow, as measured by IAP (TBFIAP), was 94.8 +/- 4.4% of the blood flow as measured by venous outflow, indicating only a small amount of non-exchanging flow. This level of shunting is lower than some previous estimates in which the percentage tumour entrapment of microspheres was used. The unperfused fraction ranged from 0 to 20% of the tumour volume in the majority of tumours. This could be due to tumour necrosis and/or acutely ischaemic tumour regions. For practical purposes, measurement of the total venous outflow of tumours is a reasonable measure of exchangeable tumour blood flow in this system and allows for on-line measurements. Tracer methods can be used to obtain additional information on the distribution of blood flow within tumours

    We discuss the case of a 63 years old female who required repeated intubation due to recurrent pulmonary edema. She was found to have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with a gradient of 82 mmHg across the left ventricular outflow tract. Initially adequate rate control and treatment with negative inotropes did not help her condition. Finally a dual chamber pacemaker implantation and atrioventricular node modification lead to successful extubation

    Predictors of Bacterial Vaginosis among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinic at Tertiary Care Hospital in Tanzania: A Cross Sectional Study

    Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the most common genital tract infections in pregnancy associated with an increased risk of pregnancy losses, maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Different social behavioural and obstetric factors can contribute to the development of BV. Determining the predictors of BV could be the best way of identifying women at high risk of developing the disease.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted between December 2017 and February 2018 to determine the prevalence and  predictors of BV among pregnant women attending antenatal Clinic (ANC) at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Tanzania. Participants  were recruited using systematic random sampling. For each consented participant, a pretested questionnaire was filled, a pelvic  examination was done and a sample was collected. BV was diagnosed using Nugentā€™s score. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 23.0. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done to determine factors that were independently associated with BV.Results: 178 (26.7%) pregnant women out of 667 were diagnosed positive for BV. In the bivariate analysis (Table 3), age (COR 1.71; 95% CI, 1.16-2.52), level of education (COR 4.08, 95% CI, 2.84-5.84), gravidity (COR, 1.52, 95% CI; 1.04-2.23), parity (COR 1.69, 95% CI; 1.18-2.42), vaginal douching (COR 2.89, 95% CI; 1.96-4.27), HIV status (COR 9.37, 95%CI; 4.12-21.28), history of STI (COR 2.49 95% CI; 1.46-4.25), LTSP (COR 2.76, 95% CI; 1.68-4.54) and age of first coitus (COR 3.19, 95% CI; 2.24-4.56) were significantly associated with BV. After adjusting for confounders in multivariate analysis, the following risk factors remained significantly associated with BV; age of 21- 29 years (AOR, 2.22, 95%CI; 1.45-3.49), primary education level (AOR 3.97, 95% CI; 2.63-5.98), vaginal douching (AOR 3.68, 95% CI; 2.35-5.76), HIV status (AOR 6.44, 95% CI; 2.62-15.88), STI infection (AOR 2.34, 95% CI; 1.25-4.37), more than one LTSP (AOR 2.69, 95% CI; 1.53-4.74) and age of less than 18 years of first coitus (AOR 2.16, 95% CI; 1.42-3.30).Conclusion: The prevalence of BV in pregnant women was found to be high. Age of less than 30 years, primary education level and below, vaginal douching, HIV infection, STI, more than one lifetime sexual partners and early age of sexual debut were found to be significant predictors of BV. The high prevalence of BV in our population should necessitate policy makers to include screening and treatment of BV in the future policy of antenatal care package, as BV is associated with significant maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Women should also be educated on harmful effects of certain behavioural practices such as vaginal douching that predispose to BV. In addition symptoms of BV such as abnormal vaginal discharge during pregnancy are inconsistent, under reported and often overlooked. Therefore, a high-risk approach can be used for screening and treatment of asymptomatic women
