    Geochemical Signatures of Potassic to Sodic Adang Volcanics, Western Sulawesi: Implications for Their Tectonic Setting and Origin

    DOI:10.17014/ijog.3.3.195-214The Adang Volcanics represent a series of (ultra) potassic to sodic lavas and tuffaceous rocks of predominantly trachytic composition, which forms the part of a sequence of Late Cenozoic high-K volcanic and associated intrusive rocks occurring extensively throughout Western Sulawesi. The tectonic setting and origin of these high-K rocks have been the subject of considerable debates. The Adang Volcanics have mafic to mafitic-intermediate characteristics (SiO2: 46 - 56 wt%) and a wide range of high alkaline contents (K2O: 0.80 - 9.08 %; Na2O: 0.90 - 7.21 %) with the Total Alkali of 6.67 - 12.60 %. Al2O3 values are relatively low (10.63 - 13.21 %) and TiO2 values relatively high (1.27 - 1.91 %). Zr and REE concentrations are also relatively high (Zr: 1154 - 2340 ppm; Total REE (TREY = TRE): 899.20 - 1256.50 ppm; TRExOy: 1079.76 - 1507.97 ppm), with an average Zr/TRE ratio of ~ 1.39. The major rock forming minerals are leucite/pseudoleucite, diopside/aegirine, and high temperature phlogopite. Geochemical plots (major oxides and trace elements) using various diagrams suggest the Adang Volcanics formed in a postsubduction, within-plate continental extension/initial rift tectonic setting. It is further suggested magma was generated by minor (< 0.1 %) partial melting of depleted MORB mantle material (garnet-lherzolite) with the silicate melt having undergone strong metasomatism. Melt enrichment is reflected in the alkaline nature of the rocks and geochemical signatures such as Nb/Zr > 0.0627 and (Hf/Sm)PM > 1.23. A comparison with the Vulsini ultrapotassic volcanics from the Roman Province in Italy shows both similarities (spidergram pattern indicating affinity with Group III ultrapotassics volcanics) and differences (nature of mantle metasomatism)

    Inhibition of copper corrosion in saline solution by mono-hydroxamic acid

    The main objective of the present work involved the study of the inhibitive properties of organic product as environmentally friendly as copper corrosion inhibitor, in 3% NaCl solution. The effectiveness of Mono-hydroxamic acid (C12N) used as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in 3% NaCl was investigated by weight loss and electrochemical techniques. Surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the chemical investigated provided efficient inhibition of copper corrosion. The inhibition efficiency improved with increasing the inhibitor concentration. C12N acts mainly as a cathodic-type inhibitor

    Reconfigurable Image Processing Metasurfaces with Phase-Change Materials

    Optical metasurfaces have been enabling reduced footprint and power consumption, as well as faster speeds, in the context of analog computing and image processing. While various image processing and optical computing functionalities have been recently demonstrated using metasurfaces, most of the considered devices are static and lack reconfigurability. Yet, the ability to dynamically reconfigure processing operations is key for metasurfaces to be able to compete with practical computing systems. Here, we demonstrate a passive edge-detection metasurface operating in the near-infrared regime whose image processing response can be drastically modified by temperature variations smaller than 10{\deg} C around a CMOS-compatible temperature of 65{\deg} C. Such reconfigurability is achieved by leveraging the insulator-to-metal phase transition of a thin buried layer of vanadium dioxide which, in turn, strongly alters the nonlocal response of the metasurface. Importantly, this reconfigurability is accompanied by performance metrics - such as high numerical aperture, high efficiency, isotropy, and polarization-independence - close to optimal, and it is combined with a simple geometry compatible with large-scale manufacturing.     Structural and optical properties of CuGaxIn1−xSe2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.75) polycrystalline thin films deposited by vacuum evaporation were studied as a function of composition. The optical absorption spectra of CuGaxIn1−xSe2 thin films (x /=0) show four energy gaps (Eg1 , Eg2 , Eg3 and Eg4 ) which are attributed to the fundamental edge, band splitting by crystal-field and spin-orbit splitting, and to transitions originating from copper 3d levels, respectively. The primary transition energies exhibit bowing behaviour expressed by the relationship Eg1 (x) = 1.011 + 0.448x + 0.186x 2 . The second and third transition energies are higher than the primary transition energies by 0.10–0.11 eV and 0.18–0.185 eV, respectively. The effect of thermal treatment on the values of energy gaps is discussed in terms of the structure of the films. The primary transition energies of annealed CuGaxIn1−xSe2 can be fitted by the parabolic form Eg1 (x) = 1.04 + 0.46x + 0.22x 2 .Proučavali smo strukturna i optička svojstva tankih polikristaliničnih slojeva CuGaxIn1−xSe2, isparenih u vakuumu, u ovisnosti o sastavu (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.75). Optički apsorpcijski spektri tankih slojeva CuGaxIn1−xSe2, (x /=0), pokazuju četiri energijska procijepa (Eg1 , Eg2 , Eg3 i Eg4 ) koji se pridjeljuju osnovnom rubu, cijepanju vrpci kristalnim poljem i cijepanju spin-staza, odnosno prijelazima iz 3d stanja bakra.     Survivable Cloud Network Mapping for Disaster Recovery Support

    Network virtualization is a key provision for improving the scalability and reliability of cloud computing services. In recent years, various mapping schemes have been developed to reserve VN resources over substrate networks. However, many cloud providers are very concerned about improving service reliability under catastrophic disaster conditions yielding multiple system failures. To address this challenge, this work presents a novel failure region-disjoint VN mapping scheme to improve VN mapping survivability. The problem is first formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem and then two heuristic solutions are proposed to compute a pair of failure region-disjoint VN mappings. The solution also takes into account mapping costs and load balancing concerns to help improve resource efficiencies. The schemes are then analyzed in detail for a variety of networks and their overall performances compared to some existing survivable VN mapping scheme

    Abdominal surgical site infection incidence, risk factors, and antibiotic susceptibility at a university teaching hospital in western Uganda: A cross-sectional study

    Background: Surgical site infection (SSIs) is a global burden that contributes towards morbidity and mortality of patients undergoing abdominal surgeries. There is paucity of data on SSIs in resource constrained Uganda to guide antibiotic protocols.This study aimed to determine the incidence of SSIs, risk factors, common causative bacteria and their susceptibility patterns amongst patients undergoing abdominal surgeries at Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH), Uganda.Methods: Cross-sectional observational cohort study involving culture and sensitivity of pus swabs from surgical sites of consented consecutive patients. Laboratory tests were performed at the United States Army Research Laboratory on Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). Data was analysed using SPSS 20.0. Chi-square and binary logistic regression analyses were performed at 95% confidence interval, regarding pResults: Of the 138 patients, 17.4% (n=24) developed SSIs. The risk factors for SSIs were comorbidity with diabetes mellitus, cancer without enrolment for anti-cancer treatment, pre-operative white blood cell count >11.0×109 cells/L, and HB Conclusions: The prevalence of SSIs in the present study was higher than previously reported. P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. aureus, MRSA, and K. pneumoniae were the leading cause of SSIs.
