Partitioning optimization of proteins from Zea mays malt in ATPS PEG 6000/CaCl2
This work aimed to establish the relationship between the compositions and pH of ATPS PEG 6000/CaCl2 and the proteins partition from maize malt and also to simplify the process optimization in ATPS for a statistical model, established by response surface methodology (RSM). Results showed that these were no influence of pH on the phase diagrams and on the composition of tie line length of PEG 6000/CaCl2 ATPS. SRM analyses showed that elevated pH and larger tie line length were the best conditions for recovering of maize malt proteins. The maximum partition coefficient by PEG 6000/CaCl2 ATPS was about 4.2 and was achieved in ATPS in a single purification step. The theoretical maximum partition coefficient was between 4.1-4.3. The process was very suitable for continuous aqueous two phase purification due to the stability of proteins (e.g. alpha and beta-amylases) and could increase their content into middle.50355756
Outcome and quality of life after aorto-bifemoral bypass surgery
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aorto-bifemoral bypass (AFB) is commonly performed to treat aorto-iliac disease and a durable long-term outcome is achieved. Most studies documenting beneficial outcomes after AFB have been limited to mortality and morbidity rates, costs and length of hospital stay (LOS). Few studies have examined the dependency of patients and how their perception of their own health changes after surgery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate outcome after AFB and to study its determinants.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This retrospective study was carried out in the multidisciplinary Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with five intensive care beds. Out of 1597 intensive care patients admitted to the PACU, 75 were submitted to infrarenal AFB and admitted to these intensive care unit (ICU) beds over 2 years. Preoperative characteristics and outcome were evaluated by comparing occlusive disease with aneurysmatic disease patients. Six months after discharge, the patients were contacted to complete a Short Form-36 questionnaire (SF-36) and to have their dependency in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) evaluated. Patient's characteristics and postoperative follow-up data were compared using Mann-Whitney U test, t test for independent groups, chi-square or Fisher's exact test. Patient preoperative characteristics were evaluated for associations with mortality using a multiple logistic regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mortality rate was 12% at six months. Multivariate analysis identified congestive heart disease and APACHE II as independent determinants for mortality. Patients submitted to AFB for occlusive disease had worse SF-36 scores in role physical and general health perception. Patients submitted to AFB had worse SF-36 scores for all domains than a comparable urban population and had similar scores to other PACU patients. Sixty-six percent and 23% of patients were dependent in at least one activity in instrumental and personal ADL, respectively, but 64% reported having better general health.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study shows that congestive heart disease and APACHE II were risk factors for mortality after AFB surgery. Survivors who have undergone AFB perceive an improved quality of life although they are more dependent in ADL tasks and have worse scores in almost all SF-36 than the population to which they belong.</p
Incident type 2 diabetes attributable to suboptimal diet in 184 countries
The global burden of diet-attributable type 2 diabetes (T2D) is not well established. This risk assessment model estimated T2D incidence among adults attributable to direct and body weight-mediated effects of 11 dietary factors in 184 countries in 1990 and 2018. In 2018, suboptimal intake of these dietary factors was estimated to be attributable to 14.1 million (95% uncertainty interval (UI), 13.814.4 million) incident T2D cases, representing 70.3% (68.871.8%) of new cases globally. Largest T2D burdens were attributable to insufficient whole-grain intake (26.1% (25.027.1%)), excess refined rice and wheat intake (24.6% (22.327.2%)) and excess processed meat intake (20.3% (18.323.5%)). Across regions, highest proportional burdens were in central and eastern Europe and central Asia (85.6% (83.487.7%)) and Latin America and the Caribbean (81.8% (80.183.4%)); and lowest proportional burdens were in South Asia (55.4% (52.160.7%)). Proportions of diet-attributable T2D were generally larger in men than in women and were inversely correlated with age. Diet-attributable T2D was generally larger among urban versus rural residents and higher versus lower educated individuals, except in high-income countries, central and eastern Europe and central Asia, where burdens were larger in rural residents and in lower educated individuals. Compared with 1990, global diet-attributable T2D increased by 2.6 absolute percentage points (8.6 million more cases) in 2018, with variation in these trends by world region and dietary factor. Spatial and temporal variation patterns of a waterfowl community in a reservoir system of the Central Plateau, Mexico
The reservoirs studied are located on a very important migratory flyway in the Mexican Central Plateau. The survey included the waterfowl, macrophytes and physico-chemical parameters of three localities visited on ten occasions during a 1-year period. A total of 23 waterfowl species were observed: 6 transients, 10 winter visitants, and 7 residents. A period of increased richness was detected in winter, when migratory species arrive at the reservoirs. A canonical correspondence analysis showed segregation patterns of the species for the use of the space. Migratory ducks occurred in Umecuaro, where there is a larger variety of macrophytes and eutrophication occurs. Loma Caliente was the area with less eutrophication and was not preferred by ducks. Gallinago gallinago and Ardea herodias were the species with the highest frequency of occurrence, while the Effluent was the preferred site of resident species. Although the reservoirs studied are small, they are suitable for a significative number of species to be considered as a waterfowl protection and conservation zone
Study of amylases recovery from maize malt by ion-exchange expanded bed chromatography
In the present work, the effect of bed expansion and buffer type on the adsorption of amylases from maize malt on Amberlite 410 ion-exchange resin was studied. The hydrodynamic behavior of an expanded bed adsorption column was studied to obtain the optimal conditions of amylases recovery on ion-exchange resin. Residence time distribution showed that HEPT, axial dispersion and the Prandt number increased with bed height, bed voidage and linear velocity. The adsorption capacity of amylases on the resin increased with bed height and the phosphate buffer shows the best recovering of amylases from maize malt on the Amberlite IRA 410 ion-exchange resin. Wine clarification from Spondias mombin L. pulp by hollow fiber membrane system
The aim of this work was to study the caja (Spondias mombin L.) wine clarification using a hollow fiber membrane system. Two caja wines clarified with bentonite clay were used for comparison. Transmembrane pressures of 0.40 and 0.60 bar were used. Ninety-five percent of caja wine colors were reduced at both transmembrane pressures and 66% with bentonite clay clarification. Caja wine clarified with the membrane process was light yellow; but caja wine clarified with bentonite clay had a turbid appearance. This works showed that it is possible to clarify the caja wine with the membrane process and that this process did not change the quality of the wine and retained color, aroma and flavor from the caja fruits.
