The rapid expansion of fiber optic networks and services, which sees a large number of circuits enabled and disabled each day, introduces a significant complexity for operators to identify fibers that have and do not have attached clients. The service level agreements prevent operators from disconnecting circuits without absolute assurance that no clients are attached. We propose a non-intrusive multichannel fiber detector to facilitate the operation and maintenance of the optical networks. The optical distribution frame usually does not have any power available, thus, the proposed device operates without batteries and is powered by near field communication (NFC). Device installation does not require fiber disconnection or communication interruption, and introduces less than 1 dB insertion loss to detect optical signals down to -30 dBm. In order to read multiple fiber channel status, an NFC-enabled smartphone is used to power the device and measure the signal levels of each channel.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A model to evaluate vertical handovers on JRRM

In a heterogeneous cellular networks environment, users behaviour and network deployment configuration parameters have an impact on the overall Quality of Service. This paper proposes a new and simple model that, on the one hand, explores the users behaviour impact on the network by having mobility, multi-service usage and traffic generation profiles as inputs, and on the other, enables the network setup configuration evaluation impact on the Joint Radio Resource Management (JRRM), assessing some basic JRRM performance indicators, like Vertical Handover (VHO) probabilities, average bit rates, and number of active users, among others. VHO plays an important role in fulfilling seamless users sessions transfer when mobile terminals cross different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) boundaries. Results show that high bit rate RATs suffer and generate more influence from/on other RATs, by producing additional signalling traffic to a JRRM entity. Results also show that the VHOs probability can range from 5 up to 65%, depending on RATs cluster radius and users mobility profile

A model for heterogeneous networks management and performance evaluation

In general, modern networks are analysed by taking several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) into account, their proper balance being required in order to guarantee a desired Quality of Service (QoS), particularly, cellular wireless heterogeneous networks. A model to integrate a set of KPIs into a single one is presented, by using a Cost Function that includes these KPIs, providing for each network node a single evaluation parameter as output, and reflecting network conditions and common radio resource management strategies performance. The proposed model enables the implementation of different network management policies, by manipulating KPIs according to users' or operators' perspectives, allowing for a better QoS. Results show that different policies can in fact be established, with a different impact on the network, e.g., with median values ranging by a factor higher than two

Control of programmed cell death by Rho-like GTPases-activated signalling cascades in the developing neuron

Neuronal apoptosis is an essential process occurring not only during normal development but also in pathological situations including stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases. The mechanisms underlying neuronal cell death have begun to be unravelled. Rat superior cervical ganglion neurons (SCGs) have proven to be a good study model as they die by apoptosis when withdrawn from nerve growth factor (NGF). It has previously been shown that upregulation of the c-Jun transcription factor and of its phosphorylation are essential for NGF withdrawal-induced apoptosis in SCG neurons. This thesis tries to identify the signalling molecules that mediate apoptosis of SCG neurons via the c-Jun transcriptional pathway. The Rho-like GTPases Cdc42 and Rac1 have been shown to be involved in the activation of the c-Jun-NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway in other systems and therefore an investigation into the role of these GTPases was carried out. Here, it is demonstrated that Cdc42 and Rac1, but not RhoA or Ras, are required for cell death of SCG neurons and that they activate the JNK pathway, thereby inducing neuronal apoptosis. A further examination of the signalling molecules that would lie between Cdc42 and JNK on the death signaling pathway was then conducted. Here it is shown that two mitogen activated protein kinase kinase kinases (MAPKKKs), ASK1 and MLK3, are crucial elements of NGF withdrawal- induced activation of the Cdc42-c-Jun pathway and neuronal apoptosis

Many current societies are characterized by the convergence of different languages and cultures that coexist in a certain place where traditions, beliefs, knowledge and values are exchanged. In the educational field, the school and specifically the foreign language classroom are presented as ideal settings for intercultural learning. Intercultural competence consists of the ability of foreing language learners to function adequately and satisfactorily in situations of intercultural encounters. In educational centers where cultural diversity is not the norm but the exception, it is necessary to apply activities and projects that promote intercultural learning. In this way, projects such as exchange programs, implemented in most schools, provide added value to the learning of FL and intercultural competence, both in the language classroom and in a transversal and interdisciplinary way in other subjects. The context of this study is framed in the educational model of cooperative multilingual schools. These centers adopt an intercultural, emotional and ecological approach in learning FL that is in tune with its idiosyncrasy and their active, innovative, democratic, cooperative pedagogical line, and the root in the native language and culture. Through a qualitative study design, the research has been carried out over a period of ten years in one of these cooperative schools, and samples have been collected from about a thousand students participating in exchange programs, in order to demonstrate that intercultural competence is acquired and developed during this type of school activities

From genes to microbial consortia: multi-level bioprospecting of natural and artificial environments

    Get PDF
Microbial bioprospecting is the identification of microorganisms, genes, enzymes, and/or metabolic pathways with biotechnological applications in industry or in research itself. This thesis aimed at bioprospecting a range of unexplored, natural and artificial environments subjected to harsh physicochemical conditions by applying a multi-level strategy. The microbial communities were analyzed in a first step by means of metagenomic sequencing, which yielded an extensive catalog of the microbial species and/or genes occurring in the community, and allowed the ecological contextualization of new habitats. Culturing in artificial media was used as a complementary approach in order to isolate, select, and characterize microbial strains of particular relevance. Last, a bioinformatics algorithm was developed in order to visualize community assemblage based on the predicted associations and interactions shaping microbial consortia in environmental samples. As a result of our analysis, a range of individual microbial strains, genes and microbial consortia with potential biotechnological applications have been identified. Moreover, we propose a new, holistic approach for the efficient mining and analysis of environmental microbiomes

This article examines the education of elites and the school cultures generated in the various teaching areas of Spanish secondary education from 1931 to 1959. School is one of the first agents of socialization in a person´s life. It contributes to the process by which people assume the accepted values and behaviours in an existing socio-political system. The 28-year timeframe analyzed in this article brought educational policies, which clearly had an effect on the social, cultural and political impact of school population. Valladolid (Spain) was chosen as a model for analysis because of its privileged educational environment. The city has had a Provincial School and a good number of prominent schools both private and denominational to educate the middle class ever since the 19th century.
