Esa diversidad les obligó a buscar sus normas en un nivel superior de abstracción que uniera sus identidades particulares. El intento de lograr una ciudadanía y constitución europeas que superase las fronteras de los Estados-nación llevó a intensificar ese análisis. Habermas lo intentó, pero no entendió el concepto de comunidad societal y lo acabó sustituyendo por el de patriotismo de la constitución, que finalmente ha abandonado.
