Air quality and error quantity: pollution and performance in a high-skilled, quality-focused occupation

We provide the first evidence that short-term exposure to air pollution affects the work performance of a group of highly-skilled, quality-focused employees. We repeatedly observe the decision-making of individual professional baseball umpires, quasi-randomly assigned to varying air quality across time and space. Unique characteristics of this setting combined with high-frequency data disentangle effects of multiple pollutants and identify previously under-explored acute effects. We find a 1 ppm increase in 3-hour CO causes an 11.5% increase in the propensity of umpires to make incorrect calls and a 10 mg/m3 increase in 12-hour PM2.5 causes a 2.6% increase. We control carefully for a variety of potential confounders and results are supported by robustness and falsification checks

    Managing urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in childhood. Presence of pyuria and bacteriuria in an appropriately collected urine sample are diagnostic of UTI. The risk of UTI is increased with an underlying urological abnormality such as vesicoureteral reflux, constipation, and voiding dysfunction. Patients with acute pyelonephritis are at risk of renal scarring and subsequent complications such as hypertension, proteinuria with and without FSGS, pregnancy-related complications and even end-stage renal failure. The relevance and the sequence of the renal imaging following initial UTI, and the role of antimicrobial prophylaxis and surgical intervention are currently undergoing an intense debate. Prompt treatment of UTI and appropriate follow-up of those at increased risk of recurrence and/or renal scarring are important

The LED light sources can be stated as the most promising technology for the last decade from the lighting technology point of view. In order to compare LED chips and LED products from different manufacturers and achieve reproducible results, all of the manufacturers shall measure their LEDs or LED based products using same methodology. In this study, it is aimed to explain measurement and performance standards for LED chips and LED based Solid State Lighting products

Number fields and divisible groups via model theory

    No full text
In this note, we first show that solutions of certain equations classify the number fields lying in imaginary quadratic number fields. Then, we study divisible groups with a predicate. We show that these structures are not simple and have the independence property under some natural assumptions

Articular, B-cell, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma mimicking rheumatoid arthritis: synovial involvement in a small hand joint.

Polyarticular joint manifestations as the predominant symptom of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) are quite rare. In the absence of peripheral lymph node and visceral involvement, lymphomas presenting as polyarthritis create a problem for the patients as another rheumatic disease. We present a case that had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis because of symmetrical articular symptoms. The patient later developed severe pain and marked swelling in her right fourth finger, and a diagnosis of septic arthritis and osteomyelitis complicating rheumatoid arthritis was assumed. The final diagnosis of NHL with synovial involvement could be made only after histopathologic examination of a biopsy specimen obtained from the amputated finger. This is the first case report demonstrating direct synovial involvement of a small joint in a patient with NHL presenting with polyarthritis. Articular and periarticular involvement of multiple joints shown by MRI in this patient suggests that direct synovial involvement may be responsible for the polyarticular symptoms in such patients
