Integration of new biological and physical retrospective dosimetry methods into EU emergency response plans : joint RENEB and EURADOS inter-laboratory comparisons
Purpose: RENEB, 'Realising the European Network of Biodosimetry and Physical Retrospective Dosimetry,' is a network for research and emergency response mutual assistance in biodosimetry within the EU. Within this extremely active network, a number of new dosimetry methods have recently been proposed or developed. There is a requirement to test and/or validate these candidate techniques and inter-comparison exercises are a well-established method for such validation.
Materials and methods: The authors present details of inter-comparisons of four such new methods: dicentric chromosome analysis including telomere and centromere staining; the gene expression assay carried out in whole blood; Raman spectroscopy on blood lymphocytes, and detection of radiation induced thermoluminescent signals in glass screens taken from mobile phones.
Results: In general the results show good agreement between the laboratories and methods within the expected levels of uncertainty, and thus demonstrate that there is a lot of potential for each of the candidate techniques.
Conclusions: Further work is required before the new methods can be included within the suite of reliable dosimetry methods for use by RENEB partners and others in routine and emergency response scenarios
Investigation of non-linear interactions of shf-waves in thin ferromagnetic films
The non-linear interactions of electromagnetic and spin waves are investigated in the films of yttrium iron garnet (YIG).The aim of the paper is the experimental investigation of non-linear effects at application of the electromagnetic pump field on the YIG film (at propagation of magnetostatical waves in it) and also the construction of theoretical models adequately describing the studied experimental phenomena. During investigation the methods of magnetostatics equations and microwave equipment have been used. The analytical expression has been obtained for parametric excitation threshold of spin waves in case when both the pump and parametrically excited SW belong to the magnetostatic part of spectrum. It has been shown that the parametric excitation threshold depends upon the dimensions of pump localization field that has been connected with energy removal from localization field by spin waves. The amplification of surface magnetostatic waves by a longitudinal pumping has been investigated, and the SMW amplification in continuous regime has been obtained before parametrical excitation of the exchange spin waves. Reflections on the future developments of research in retrospective physical dosimetry
Electron paramagnetic resonance, thermoluminescence, and optically stimulated luminescence, with biological tissues and inert materials are well established physical methods for retrospective dosimetry in acute accidental exposures. The objective of this article is to provide a view of the questions still open, the current challenges and the needed solutions. As research on emergency response methods is encountering increasing difficulties in terms of financial and human resources in many countries, it is essential to identify the research priorities and pay attention to cost-effective research paths. The intention of the paper is to stimulate discussion in the scientific community and to encourage collaboration among laboratories toward goals that address the real needs in retrospective dosimetry for acute exposures
