Determinants of tourism destination competitiveness in the countries most visited by international tourists: Proposal of a synthetic index

Tourism destination competitiveness is a multidimensional concept that is widely studied in the academic literature, but multiple factors make its measurement a difficult task. In this article, we design a synthetic index to rank the 80 countries that attract the majority of international tourists by level of tourism competitiveness. In order to do this, we use all of the simple variables included in the 2017 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, proposing a new methodology for the construction of this synthetic index, which it solves the problems of aggregation of variables expressed in different measures, arbitrary weighting and duplicity of information; issues that remain unresolved by the TTCI. Likewise, we analyse the most influential dimensions in tourism competitiveness. Air transport infrastructures, cultural resources and ICT readiness are the key dimensions that explain the main disparities.Funding Agency Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness State Research Agency (SRA) European Union (EU) ECO2017-86822-Rinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Information and communication technologies, or ICT, have revolutionized societies' daily lives and the economy's development on a global scale. Senior tourism is considered a sector in solid expansion, and, as such, it matters to understand the importance that these tourists attribute to these technologies. The association between tourism and digitalization gave rise to the concept of "smart tourism". So, it is essential to have the necessary skills to be active in a world mediated by the internet. It is not just tourist destinations that have evolved in the present digital age; tourists, themselves, have also changed. However, this digitalization has not equitably reached the entire senior population. The main goal of this article is to analyze the internet use by older tourists to plan their trip to the Algarve before the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It has the specific objective of identifying and exploring what type of service they sought the information. The results indicate that there are statistically significant differences between different groups of respondents regarding the use of the internet to plan a trip to the Algarve.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Can they manage in a sustainable way? The role of international destination awards in beach management

    Get PDF
This study aims to reveal the perceptions of local beach destination managers about the level of sustainability in their management practices. This research puts into practice a comparative study assessing two beach destinations: Mugla, located in Turkey, which won the World Travel Award, and Algarve, located in Portugal, which is a member state of the European Union (EU) that has also repeatedly won the same award. In this context, in-depth interviews were held with tourism offices in selected destinations and qualitative data were obtained through semistructured interviews that were carried out between February and April 2020. As a study outcome, two hypotheses were elected and analysed: "the two regions' sustainable managerial practices differ " and "no difference exists between the regions. " Both regions won the same award, but the EU Algarve destination is still winning the award, whereas the non-EU Mugla destination is not. The findings can be shared with beach destination managers to create or increase their sustainability awareness. No studies were found that compared the sustainable management of award-winning EU and non-EU beach destinations. Because of this gap in the literature, this study will add value to the literature about this topic.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Analysis of the role of innovation and efficiency in coastal destinations affected by tourism seasonality

    Get PDF
This research analyses the relationship between efficiency, innovation and seasonality of the Spanish coasts for a five-year period (2015-2019). First of all, the nexus between the level of efficiency and changes in pro-ductivity, driven by improvements in innovation and/or efficiency, is determined using Data Envelopment Analysis and the Malmquist Index. Second, this paper proposes a synthetic index to measure seasonality and assess its connection with efficiency and innovation, using a cross efficiency approach to do so. Results show how the intensity of seasonality influences efficiency. In addition, it is observed that innovation can offset possible decreases in efficiency; as such, policies that promote both aspects are needed in the more seasonal destinations.(c) 2022 The Authors.
